Tropical garden # 66

Red Oak, TX

LiliMerci, I did find that Joy perfume tree on e-bay a couple of years ago. it was under $20.

I woke up to snow again this morning, we have had quite enough !!!

This was a very expensive (for me) alacosia and hasn't grown much in the past several years. I will not purchase another.

Great photos, prita. What is that last flower?
I had to laugh at your promise not to bring plants in the house any more.

Rita, has your Alocasia Macrorrhiza Var. been an "easy" Alocasia to grow and perhap's Truetropical will chime in here and let us know what your noid Alocasia is.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

aaaaarrrrggghhh!! more snow..more rain..more cold...I'm moving to Costa Rica!

No kidding R.J! That storm system in Texas will hit here tomorrow but hopefully will only be rain. 25 more day's until Spring;-)

Does anyone have a variegated zz plant? I have looked all over and can't find one in the US. I know nothing about importing, lol. I would be happy with a leaf or even a couple leaflets.

Prita, okinawa silver is very pretty, so slow is tolerable :). I'd want it to grow, too, to divide and put all over the place, lol. DH built me a concrete floor area for 2/3's of my plants. I think the idea was all of them, but he didn't listen when I said I think we need it bigger, lol. If we ever build another home, I'm praying for a walkout basement with a southern exposure and a big greenhouse kickout to collect it all :). You have so many pretty plants! Where do you find them? The selection here is lame by comparison to anywhere, but still....

Spring, where are you!!??!!??

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Never seen one down here, 3j. Have a regular one. Did you check Plant Files to see if anyone has one for sale?

Hap

zone 6a, KY

None for sale that I can find, and only see references to people buying them off Ebay from Thailand. I can't go that far even for a pretty leaf, lol. They'll tissue culture them eventually, maybe.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

hmmm. Costa Rica sounds good. I'm there with ya'! We too are expecting snow tomorrow.

zone 6a, KY

I just found out that variegated zz is not a natural variegation, but is altered instead with chemicals and reverts back eventually, so please skip my request :). I didn't know.

When I propagated the ti plant, I stuck some right in the pot with the broken off stub, and also set a cane cutting on it's side in a clear sandwich box. It is sprouting all over, roots and stems. What would be the next best step, plant the whole thing and maybe bury the cane just a little? Or cut it into smaller sections as long as it has roots and a branch? The soil is quickly being used up in the sandwich box and so is the headspace. Any suggestions?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Rita, most of my prized and glorious mgs have come from emma on ebay...;)
refresh my memory/// what is a zz?

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

I'm with JW! What in the world is a zz plant? Is it some kind of weird genetic contraction grown from ZZ Top's whiskers? Perish the thought.

Thanks for enlightening me.
Sylvain.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

a plant that's sleeping...! ho ho ha ha.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Rj, Enough already!!!

This is the closest that I can come to it..

Sylvain, Art gave it to me years ago.

This this is it.

Zamioculcas zamiifolia

It's in the plant files.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

OH!!!! I googled it!.. I love that! I almost bought one. I bet you just love it. I know I would.

zone 6a, KY

I don't know how patient you are, but I started some leaves growing to propagate it, but they are really really slow compared to a lot of things :). I know sometimes I'd rather pay the money to have a plant now than to wait a year for one, lol.

Yes, zamioculcas zamiifolia http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2142/

The variegated version http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/183237/ is neat looking, too, but according to Steve at ExoticRainForest, it isn't a natural variegation, but a chemical they use to get the look and eventually turns green. If that's the case, I'll wait 10 years until they have them at Walmart for $5 :).

Dandridge, TN(Zone 6a)

joeswife and rita, what is MG?

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Nancy, might I bum a leaf off your ZZ plant? It sounds interesting.

Sylvain.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Now, Sylvain, I don't deliver, but if you are in the area on Sunday, you can pick one up then. hehe

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

kind of reminds me of the autograph plant

zone 6a, KY

I got one at Walmart for $5 (they had it mislabeled, sposed to be $9) and it was stretching the 6" pot, so I divided it into 2 pots. It is putting up spikes here and there, and my 2 plants already look as full as the plants still at Walmart. I haven't been treating it like a cactus, though. I'm kind of treating it more like an alocasia, let soil dry to damp, then water again, feeding weakly ever 2-3 weeks or so for now. It is between 70 and 85F degrees in that growing area, so the heat probably helps.

Here is one of the zamioculcas zamiifolia and the nursery pot of alocasia amazonica. There are more baby points coming out of the soil. Happy days :).

So I had a ti plant that broke off just below the soil line. The stick still had a few roots, so I poked that (it's sprouting). I cut the top off and poked it (it's rooting). And I took cane cuttings from the middle section..... planted them in a sandwich box on their side. Now what do I do with them. They probably don't need to be in there anymore. If nobody is sure, I'll just play with them and learn much about cordyline, but would love other peoples experience with them :).

Hi everyone!

Rj, I did like the markets in Bangkok and Chang Mai, But to be honest I was in phenom phenn Cambodia and their stuff was WAY cheaper, and more variety.... which is insane thinking about how cheap the stuff in Thailand was!

Lilimerci, Sorry no i did not get any seeds.... i was gone from Jan 4th 2009 to Dec 3 2009, and we worked with a different ministry every month in a different country every month. i just never got the opportunity and i figured I might already look suspicious having not been in the country for a year, going to so many countries and not have a yellow fever card... i didn't want to add one more thing of my "we need to take you into the back room" list.

here is a picture from my trip when we were in Africa. There was a reserve close to our house for the month so we went there one day to just walk a round and we got REAL close to these giraffe. It was about this time that a tour guide pulled up arguing with each other about who was going to tell us we couldn't be there.

Well here is the beginning of a plumeria I got from Dutchady it is starting to bloom and has no leaves..............lol and next week I am leaving for orleans which i can not wait to go.

Thumbnail by pensacolagarden

Great to see that inflo; however, it will be another 4-6 weeks or so before you will see blooms. I hope you'll post a picture then!!

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

Yes I will and I can not wait for it to be in full bloom. I also can not wait to see orleans I havent been there yet and for my birthday they are sending me to see my best friend.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Have a wonderful time...

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I agree with the Cambodia shopping! I was on a buying trip when I was in Chiang Mai, for an Import store I was part owner of here. I shipped a 40 foot container back crammed with stuff...my Cambodian purchases seemed to sell fastest, and was better quality, and much less expensive. Did you find it dangerous at all? It still doesn't have the best reputation.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

I have a family member working over in Cambodia right now. She will be moving on later this summer. What kind of seeds should I ask her to send?

Red Oak, TX

No I gound it to be great. I spent most of my month in cambodia in Phenom Phenn which is a huge tourist town... and the way our trip was structured we would spend 3 weeks working along side the organization and one week rest/travel to next location. In our week of rest we went to Siam Reap and it was AMAZING. I love Asia. Definitely could see myself living there some day!

Red Oak, TX

Hello Everyone

lakesidecallas, that flower is a Stictocardia Beraviensis (Hawaiian sunset vine)
That was my first bloom.

RachelLF, I would say that the variegated macrorrhiza is a easy plant to grow. I have mine growing in a pot, and my friend has his planted in the ground and they both grow very well.

LiliMerci, I did visit Costa Rica a long time ago, and totally enjoyed the country.
It is cool and sunny today with more rain and snow in the forecast.

3jsmom31, I promise if I ever find a variegated ZZ plant, half is definately yours.
I would bury the cane on your Ti plant just a little and wait until it is warm and sunny then pot individually. Congratulation on getting them rooted. Joeswife might have a few suggestions for you, we know that she is very good at rooting sticks.
This is mostly how I get my plants from friends. Someone left this at my door.

Found the zz plant at HD today for $19.98. Didn't buy it. Is that a good price?

Christi

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Christi, I think that is a lot. Don't you have anyone around that could give you a leaf? I have never tried it, but I hear that you can start a plant from a leaf. But, it is a very slow growing plant. In our HD, there is usually a table of small, 'Angel' plants. Check to see if there might be a baby there.

Hap

truetropical, what a great adventure you have had, how wonderful!
