Tropical garden # 66

Red Oak, TX

Time for a new thread... I just got back from my year long missions trip and this is a picture of one of the vines I saw in Thailand. The flower was about 4 inches across and smelled better than roses!

Red Oak, TX

yeah RJ, I have been out of country since jan 4th 2009, it was quite the long trip:)

That first flower looks like a bloom from a cannonball tree. Are you sure it was on a vine?
A friend in FL had one and I took lots of photos. I think the botanical name is Couroupita guianaensis.

That's a cute container.

Here's a big staghorn fern I snapped at Fairchild Botanical Garden.

Lakesidecallas, that was my first thought as well, Cannonball Tree, Couroupita guianensis. Wanted to check my photos to make sure. I have a very small tree, too small yet to have even marbles let alone cannonballs.

Found my photos of Cannonball Tree flowers.

Also found my photos of the Sausage Tree, Kigelia pinnata.

Tropic, we have the sausages here too. Not a good tree to use in a driveway. LOL Very different looking.

Lakeside. That is my favorite area at Fairchild. I could just move in there and be 'Happy". There are so my nooks and crannies to see stuff. It's great. Hope they have had heat in there this winter!!.

Enjoyed the show; beautiful pictures!!!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Sounds like a fun trip! I love Thailand! Did you go to Chaing Mai? I saw the biggest plummeria tree in my life there..big as an oak tree on the way up to the temple.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Beautiful, True. It must have been a wonderful trips.

The first time I saw the Cannonball Tree it had the fruit, not flowers. They say when the fruit falls it breaks and stinks. That's why I planted my tree up the other end of the driveway well away from the house. But no wonder you thought the flowers were from a vine. I've never seen them produce so many long inflorescences as the one in your photo.

The plant "just kinda out of place" looks like an Anthurium sp. I think there's a few "Birdsnest Anthuriums".

The fern they've been writing on looks like an Asplenium nidus.

A lot of people from here go to Thailand and say it's a great place. Some I know spend the dry season here and then go to Thailand for their dry season (our wet season). You can live there quite cheaply and the people are very friendly.

I have enjoyed viewing all the picture's applied here as well. Keep them coming everyone.

OMGosh, stunning pictures!!!

Trop, they look pretty toasted. Sorry :(. Have you thought about what you'd like to plant in their memory?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Good Morning All,

Probably shouldn't have complained about my coconuts, for they may be gone due to the frigid weather. Almost all the fronds on every tree are burned and falling like crazy right along with the baby nuts. This has been quite a winter.

Hap

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey hap, my foxtail is also burned...do you know if I should leave the burned fronds on if they're not falling off. I remember a tropical class at the arboretum that impressed on me not to remove dead fronds like that...unless they are falling off...any input.
I just checked my large Papaya tree. The skin feels pretty soft...not ruling it dead yet, but it's suspect. This is why I have 3 year old papayas in pots as replacements in the green house!

Red Oak, TX

Rj, I did make it to Chang Mae for a little while, and it is a gorgeous city, although most of my time that month was spent in Bangkok, or on the Burma-Thai border.

Thanks Trop. for the rundown on the Cannonball... It is an interesting plant and I would definitely have one if it would grow here...
