Tropical garden # 66

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

Thank You Prita I am hoping for the same..........lol

LouC: I found mine at Walmart. They had it priced $5, but it rang $9, but they gave the $5 shelf price. It was in a 6" pot and stood out of the soil about 12". It is now in 2 6" pots and is getting taller leaves on it. I have a couple leaflets started if you are patient. I would hate to give $20 for it but for a huge one, maybe :).

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

unless there is some program for pre-screened seeds that are sanctioned by the US gov, then saving seeds is not recommended, particularly by a person unfamiliar with plants. If she's familiar ..then she'll know what to save

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Rj, (whisper) What are you talking about? SHHHHH

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I think you go it, Christi!

And 3j. You are awesome.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Love that Hellebore, Rita, thank you.. I also wish I had freinds like you do! LoL I don't know what that is but it looks way cool.

true, I am glad you got to go and see real live girraffes. How fun is that?

MG is short for either Morning Glory, or Master Gardener, which I am not the latter.
I looked ofr the ZZ's they have them here, but I have to wait, I have oodles of babys around the house that are going to get big, and need to think about the layout for this years' Garden. Hibs are budded.. I can't wait.
My Stictocardia Beraviensis is really going to town, and should bloom this summer.
James, I wish I were going to New Orleans, I have never been there.. my college girl wants to go , real bad. Have fun and take pictures!

did someone say "sticks"? ;D I thought this one had died, but it surprised me..

Nice pair a sticks there, joeswife :) I have to play with cordyline fruitcosa cane cuttings. I think I like them, though :). They root fast and plentifully, lol.

rj, do you mean sleeping plants like the seeds someone was asking about, or sleeping pants, like it's bedtime and a bit chilly? Either one is a nice thing...

Truetropical, I used to work at the greenhouse at an arboretum, so I know about the flashbacks. Thanks for sharing your wonderful garden and may your next one be just as lush and pretty.

Hey, tropicbreezii... What's up?

Prita, from what Steve at exoticrainforest said, the variegated zz's don't keep the variegation. Eventually they revert because they are not a variegated plant, it is achieved with chemicals. Who knew? If we get them cheap, we can enjoy them first variegated and then green :).

LouC: If nobody lives nearby with one, and you can't find a leaf at the doctor's office, someone could mail you a couple leaflets. I set them in 2 ways, in a clear plastic sandwish container and just stuck in a pot. The sandwich container leaflet is already showing a little tuber forming at the bottom, so I moved the others to that environment. I also left 2 leaflets on a bit of stem to see what that would do, not sure yet, and last, I started just a stub of petiole. I will let you guys know how it goes if you want. I am a mad plant scientist.... a ha ha ha ha ha ha (evil laugh)...

Oops 3jsmom, looks like you've caught me lurking!

I've been dropping in for quick visits to keep up and drop an occasional note or two. Decided to set up an identification guide for local plants and that's kept me pretty busy. The guide's computer based with images of plants. There's about 2000 species but I've cut that back to about 1500 by leaving out grasses and sedges. I only expect to get a small number of all those but at least it will be something. And it'll give me somewhere to put any info I find on IDs without just relying on memory.

Anyway, here's some of the photos I've taken lately for the ID guide.

Oh, that was a good one, lol. I didn't see that coming. Having a blond moment... ok, I'll hush now so they can rest, lol....

That is awful about the tsunami!!! I hope everyone is well!!!!

Beautiful pics sunshine. All the snow melted off yesterday, and today, it's all snowy again. I'm so confused :( , lol.

zone 6a, KY

Wow, tropic. That is quite an undertaking!!! And an awesome one at that. :). Beautiful pics as usual :).

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Sun is out today and they are saying possible snow showers by Tuesday. Now look, guys, this is Dallas, Texas and we DON'T HAVE THIS KIND OF WEATHER! My greenhouse was crushed by the snow storm we had Feb. 11 and it has been too cold to even try to salvage anything. We have it covered with a tarp. This will truly be a spring of starting from scratch. Only thing up is the poppy seeds and they are thriving.

(How many times have I already told you that the greenhouse is crushed?) Just another aggravation.

I am worried about the tsunami and the people in Chili. Makes my problems take a back seat.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

WOW, tropic, that is quite an undertaking. Is our Plant Files any help? Will you add your findings for us?

Thanks.

Hap

Dandridge, TN(Zone 6a)

I would like to see some Phormiums if anyone has them, one of my newer interests!

I hope everyone has heard the Tsunami warnings and has moved to safety, my heart goes out to those hurt and killed in Chile.

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Yes, although we have not had any snow or below-freezing temperatures here in South Florida, this has truly been "The Winter Of Our Discontent", We experienced cold-related losses to our tender tropicals. My pond's little fishies died and Gail suffered in an inordinate way because of her arthritis. Will this winter ever end?

This, you have to remember, from a polar bear from Canada who has lived 50 years like an eskimo.

Take care, all.

Didn't Caesar say' Attu, Brutus'?

zone 6a, KY

I think you don't expect temps like that in Southern Florida. Anyway, you're allowed to be a little peeved that the cold hunted you down and hurt your loved one and your tropical garden and fish. I'll be mad with you. I have just had enough cold for this year :(

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

3j.

I've been here over 25 years and never had a winter like this. Maybe one or 2 cold nights, but weeks of near freezing? Never. But we will move on and this spring/summer will be the best. It got rid of a lot of things that shouldn't be here. Wanted to cut back on my garden anyway, but didn't know where to start. Now that problem has been eliminated. See how easy life is? YUK!

Hap

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Seems we are all singing the same song. Sick of the worst winter on record. But as you say, I needed to cut back anyway. This is a sure way to know what is truly hardy and what is not. Actually, not looking too good for much of anything. Our tornado season is just around the corner.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Are the tomatoes going to be OK, Christi?

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Caesar was told: "Beware Caesar, the Ides of March". It's strange and cryptic advice. I agree with that. But it's not March yet, is it? Crazy Romans.

With relative humidity outside falling below 35%, I keep getting weather alerts many times a day on my computer, indicating that conditions are conducive to the propagation of wild fires. Hey, it was raining raindrops the size of chicken eggs a few hours ago. And they were falling almost horizontally.

Meanwhile, ducks were walking around with rubber boots and upturned umbrellas. How in blazes can any danger of wild fires exist in such conditions? I think the weather people are using truckloads of illegal substances somewhere. Now, where do I get my hands of them there illicit substances? Gail must have some in her meds kit. Just kidding. I am not built strong enough to resist the onslaught of chemicals at her disposal. Two Tylenols and I can't stand up anymore.

Take care, all.
Sylvain.

I'll take any extras.

To get to work up on the mountain, one has to get up pretty early!

Work starts at 7:00 AM, after 1 1/2 hours of driving from Puna to about 8,000 ft. on Mauna Kea.
