Let's See Your ARBORS and TRELLISES! Part 4

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

It has been quite a project reclaiming the old Veggie Garden. Every year we clean up a little more of it and it looks better and better.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

:-) :-) Seems like gardening is never done and there are always ongoing projects!

Holly

I love your new arbor... great job on it... and the garden isn't bad either...

Thought I would give you an update on the GH area. The floor has been poured and is waiting for a 30 day cure period before we stain it. Another 2 weeks we will start the staining process and then the GH can go up. It was hard keeping Ric from jumping right in as he really wants to get it up. But it will be so much easier to acid etch the floor and stain it without any structure. Here is a link to more pic's of the arbor and GH area.

Holly - That is going to be absolutely beautiful when it is completed! Are you going to do a brick pathway to the greenhouse from the arbor? I love it! ♥♥♥

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes, The path will be brick. Ric has been working on it and it will give him something to keep busy with for this week.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Well, The brick path is finished. Really looks nice. Ric did a great job.

Holly - WONDERFUL!!! What a beautiful path and areas at each end! I love all the plants growing next to each side of the path too! Looks like everything is filling in already! Just beautiful!!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks, He really has done a wonderful job.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I agree! Your dh is quite handy! When he's done ... send him over my way! LOL! ;-)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thought I would post a update on the GH. We stained the floor a few weeks ago, the stain color just didn't look right wasn't near like the color pictured. It is a stain and maybe if we had older grayer concrete it would have looked like the picture but our new white slab didn't. So we added a second color to darken and give it dimension and we are very pleased with it now. The Glads are blooming now and Ric added a bamboo rail to the walkway to keep the Glads off the path. The Red Runner Beans are growing beautifully on the Arbor. As you can see the GH is going up and it is coming along very well.

what a great way to enter a great time in the greenhouse

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Holly - That looks amazingly professional and custom made... which of course ... it is! I bet you and your dh are very proud of how nice it is turning out! Lucky you to have a dh who loves working outdoors, too! Makes the work go quicker and better to have the help! I look forward to seeing the greenhouse when it is completed! Love the flooring and colors! Beautiful! ♥

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I wanted to come back with a few new pics first the finished GH. Well it isn't really finished as there is still a lot to do, fans, benchs, heat and such but the structure is pretty much complete.

We also added a new large trellis to the side of the house. Ric designed it and Josh built it. It was built in two pieces and fits together like puzzle pieces.

So here is the finished trellis. I planted climbing hydrangeas at the posts and a dwarf box wood between. This is in the Secret Garden area not far from the Arbor. I used a dark stain so it would stand out against the side of the house and match the dark wood of the arbor.

My father build me this arbor swing. Has DreamWeaver climbing roses and gold flame honeysuckle. Never have too much of a problem with bees.

Jess that is just beautiful.
I see you live in Pa.

Winterville, GA(Zone 8a)

My brother, who lives with us, built this two-seater arbor for me last year. I'm simply ecstatic over it. I've got wisteria growing from both sides, but had to cut it back late fall so that I could paint it in the spring.

WOW! That is really beautiful. Your brother is a real artist. What a lovely gift.

Thanks. Here's another one he built for a friend.

Just look at all the detail in that. What a wonderful builder he is.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I would have them all over the place if someone in my family could build them like that!!

Winterville, GA(Zone 8a)

Thank you Holly & Roses, yes, I'm truly blessed to have such a talented brother. Funny, I noticed you are both from PA. We're also from PA. My DH and I lived in the Allentown/Bethlehem area and my brother lived further north in Nicholson. DH's job brought us down here to GA about 12 years ago, whereas, my brother came down here 2 years ago for the warmer climate. We sure do miss the PA soil though.

A lot of great ideas on this thread!

This thread is wonderful and very inspiring. I would love to have an arbor over one of my ponds. My husb. is a retired welder mostly tired but maybe I could get him going on one. Anchoring might be a problem as it would have to be very wide and high and yet withstand our ligtening storms which are usually acompanied by wind. BUT there is usually always a way it you take the time to plan ahead. Went back on this thread to beginning and so glad I did.

Thanks to everyone for the great photos and suggestions.

Hi Bonnie, So glad you dropped by and took the time to tour the thread from the beginning. Did you go all the way back to the first Arbors and Trellises thread? That would have taken a good bit of time but there are just so many beautiful projects and ton's of ideas. I have some pic's of the Veggie Garden Arbor with Hyacinth Bean Vine Growing on it. I will post them later for you.

Yes, went to back to day 1 and definitely worth it.
I used to have hyacinth bean vine on my front fence and they are beautiful. Look forward to your pics.
Told my husb. about arbor and he said on no you've been on those forums again.
Can't you just picture a humped back bridge with a humped back arbor over it covered with creeping fig which doesn't shed by the way but does grow rampant. I have it all over the front and side of my house and when I have to pull it off all the paint will come with it. It will be time to repaint again anyway. Considering I do all that work myself I don't worry about it. Got to do it within 5 years cause I'm 75 now and might not have the pep if I wait too long. LOL

He built a lovely pergola across front entrance to garden 16 feet wide as I often bring tractor or dump truck in when I buy bulk mulch so needed it wide and high. He's slow but builds to last. He can draw blueprints due to being a steel fabricator for so many years. Has size of every board on his diagram. When we were bldg. my last pond in June of 2012 he was running around with a long level and putting in on everthing. Consequently this pond is level which lots of them aren't.
All my pics are on new pond in progress on water garden forum. It wsa hot digging but we made it and now my koi are happy in a larger home. Old pond is not level but fish don't care.

Thanks for all the effort in putting all the pics and info on here. Later I'm going to take a scrap of rebar and put one end in vice and see if I can bend it by hand. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Isn't it nice to have a handy hubby? I think I have seen some pics of your new pond will have to go back and take another look. I just love creeping fig. It hugs the walls so close that you can still see the contours and detail of what it covers not like other larger plants that cover up everything. It won't grow out side here but I would like to start a topiary with it sometime soon.
Please post a pic of your large lovely pergola across front entrance to garden I would love to see it.
We are still planing a large one at the side of the house a parking and utility area. We have been planing it for years but always seems to get put on the back burner.

HollyA, Fraus and RCN, etc.! Wow! Love the arbors! Rebar got me thinking! Holly, We've been wanting trellis that would look good on front of our cottage. Maybe small version of yours-love square on point at top! Sweet neighbor gave us 2 pcs. plastic lattice:)! I need it for angelwing jasmine. It is starting to go down picket fence (salvaged). We are in Florida-trellis' have insulating value-cuts air bill, so we're all in! Also, doing Aunt a trellis in their backyard, for scuppernong grew from seed off very old farm vine-'thumper' marble size sweet berries! Have to cover 'unsightly' well pump in front of trellis-maybe bench w/shelf for pots? Trellis at back. I'll post before/after of both projects:).

Pic. of our backyard scuppernong vines arbor. Me, DH & Dad painted w/opps paint, built w/scrap wall demo/pieces already in yard, 4x4/2x4roadside & old garden bed boards:)-painted w/opps paint- lol. Paid top $ for some paint-realized there was always a gal. mint color in 'opps'-mixed several from Lowe's/3 walmarts. Sm. $ painted whole house, arbor & 1 old trellis, neighbor gave- added couple new boards, nailed bird house on-sweet dil's grandpa gave, turned it on side, added 2x4's on ends caulked GOOD, 'oops' paint and use for cucumbers + black cap chickadee moved in:)
#1-window box made out if two $1.50 fence pickets and .99cent 1x2:), #2-old trellis painted on side in garden w/bird house,#3&4 our 'salvaged' scuppernong arbor, #5- mostly salvaged picket fence. Took apart-put back w/every other new 6" board cut flush (approx. $1.50 for stock 6" pieces/2 cuts per piece. Salvaged 7 panels, needed 14, spacing 6" and a few new 1x4 for extra backs, gave exactly 14 needed and fence hardware was still on one salvage piece:) Dogs are now safe and 6" gave fence a custom look we love:)-sorry last pic. is sideways. Glad I found this, inspired me to finish other projects:)
