Thanks for posting detailed instructions rcn48.
Thanks for the bending tips Ric.
I'll be saving this information with hopes of trying something like it in the future, if the snow ever melts.

I can't wait to see what everyone creates.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I love looking at this thread.
No room for arbors here but I love them.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Welcome back Jo Ann, how was jury duty?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

They cut me loose.

YAY! Now you'll have more time to play with us :)

Sparta, NJ(Zone 6a)

After we installed a 6 foot privacy fence to keep the deer out of the backyard, my husband installed left-over trellis pieces against the fence so I can have clematis, etc. in the back yard.

What a pretty picture. Very nice.

Debbie, If I looked more like Jamie Durie, from HGTV, I'd have posted more of those pics! LOL Ric

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

LOL Ric, don't you worry you don't have anything to be ashamed of :)

vsweet, very pretty - is that a birdhouse? It adds a nice touch to the area!

Here’s a photo of the the arbor I designed and had built in our yard a few years ago. The vine is Akebia and it was 2 feet tall 2 years before this photo was taken. We have really loved having the swing, and our grand kids are crazy about it.

Thanks Janet-

The swing and chair are made by Uwharrie, and they offer several different designs and around 20 different colors. Very well built.

Thanks so much mike. I'm gonna see if I can find them on the internet. Years ago my grandmother/pa had a wonderful swing that my great grandfather made.... sad to say my sister laid claim to it and she then let it sit out and decay. it broke my heart as I was the one that got to swing in it with my grandparents.... she never wanted to go visit them....

Mike I really like the detail of the top beam. Would you have a closer pic of that?

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

HollyAnnS-

I think so. I’ll check tonight and post it tomorrow if I can find one.

Mike.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Mike we are finally getting ready to build our big arbor and I have been looking at patterns for the top. I have narrowed it down to a couple of designs and I would love to get a closer look at yours. If you won't mind I might copy it.

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

HollyAnnS-

I found this photo that shows the construction a little better.

And here is a close-up of the beam ends you were asking about. There are actually 2" x 8"s on each side of the 6" x 6" posts. I have no problem with you copying my design. Have fun.

Absolutely beautiful work and a great garden as well, Mike.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thank you Mike, I really like that reverse curve thing you have there.

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

pirl-
Thank you very much. I do like to spend time in the garden.

HollyAnneS-
Thanks. I just drew what I wanted for the top curve and rotated 180 degrees, and drew the bottom part. Then you can xerox it up or down to whatever width your beam is.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

A man after my own heart - wonderful arbor Mike :) I've been trying to get DH to get the top done on our arbor for years (built in 1997?). Probably would have been done by now if I wasn't so fussy! LOL It's all about the "details" and your design is very similar to the vision I have in my head. Thanks for the close-up - it has a very pleasing curve and might be just what I'm looking for :)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

We have a new Arbor. It was made from very old reclaimed wood. Ric got it from an old garage that they tore down, the garage was at one time a carriage house. It sits between the side yard and the Veggie Garden. There are very small variegated box woods on either side planted to make a short hedge. The Arbor is the entrance to the Veggie Garden with small benches to sit and relax. There will be a walkway down to the new greenhouse we are in the process of putting up, with Veggies and flowers growing down each side of the walk.

Since we used the old reclaimed wood I wanted a cedar shake roof.

It has a small brick floor and Ric wanted to put up wire sides. I wanted something more decorative like a lattice side but I am so glad he went with the wire, it looks perfect on the arbor. He has planted runner beans to climb up the wire sides and put a hanging pot with tomatoes and bacopa.

Holly - That looks awesome. Please take a photo of that whole veggie and arbor area when it is done. I love the raised beds. I am planning to go that route as well in the near future. I really love the seating area under the arbor too! Perfect!!!!♥

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Becky, Those are just temp raised beds. Ric is planing to put in nicer ones and more of them with walkways later. I will post more pics when he gets the walk and GH in.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I really like the idea of the walkways between the raised beds. I may steal your idea in the future! :-) I can't wait to see the photos when your area is done! I bet it will look fabulous and be a very nice veggie garden area!
