Group Seed Swap Discussion

Phyllis - Looks like a nice variegated leafed I. nil as Debra said. Can't be sure of the bloom though from your photo. Anything with variegated leaves is a plus! :-)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Beautiful blooms Ronnie, love the split indigo. Everyone in the swap
will really enjoy those beauties

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Ronnies mix she sent me last year was to die for..

I don't know why I said to die for, but they were incredibly beautiful and first to show..

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I agree with Charleen! :-)

Ronnie - Let me know if you get your seed swap today! :-) Fingers crossed.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Yay! my big fat envelope arrived back in the mail today!!! Seems we had a sub on Saturday and he didn't want to squeeze them in the box ,(they just fit in perfectly) so all is well and I am so excited to be growing some real special flowers this year. We have a new arbor in the yard that I hope will look "Glory-ious"!!

Thanks everybody, Ronnie

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Becky, my blooms have bugs on them and is writhering away. I got some spray, but too late.
The moonvine is still going. so I am going to keep watching iy. So disappointed. I've been getting up at night and looking to see if it bloomed. this morning withered. Should i Pinch them off??
Charleen

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

Gautier, MS

Just received my big fat envelope a little while ago, really enjoyed checking all the envies. Feel like a kid in a candy store. Thank you Becky and everybody for all the goodies!!

Helena

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

So glad to hear that Ronnie, Marie, and Helena received their seeds today! Yay!

Marie - Sorry to hear about the paint brush being broke. I would still use it as a mini brush if at all possible. Hopefully it has enough of a base to hold with your fingers.

I hope the other 5 folks will post here or dmail me to let me know they also received theirs. (Hint, hint!)

Now we just need Spring to hurry up and get here! :-)

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

oh my goodness......glory-ious would have been a great screen name =)

Becky, they might have been variagated all year long and I just never paid attention. I was playing around with pictures and noticed the leaves. but I also remember having some real ruffled looking blooms and then at the end of the year, I had small blue blooms. I am so looking forward to trying lots of them this year.

hey...i did this on Picasa last night....my first collage! this was the cardinal climber and JMG vines that were growing together. you cant see much of the cardinal climber, but you can see the difference in leaves and how the vines grew well together.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Phyllis - You are right ... Cardinal Climber looks good growing with I. nils. :-)

Photos are great and I am glad you got to play around with Picasa and made a collage to share with us! :-) Looks good! :-)

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

I was curious to know if morning glories are your favorite flower/passion/hobby to grow or is there another all time favorite you all have? it would be hard to pin it down for me.

this is the cleome that i grew last year.

sorry....i'm being a couch potato because the temps dropped again today and it snowed and I cant plant anything now. we still have frost in May...or later. youse guys will have blooms months before me.

i'm not whining...and I moved some of my pictures to my laptop finally. I'm re-living last summer =)

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Nice collage Nannie!

As far as vines go morning glories are my passion. I also grow and have a small collection of Dahlias and love love love to start annuals from seeds....especially impatiens, petunias and coleus.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Yep! MGs are one of my favorite plants. I do like Petunias, too! As well as all kinds of tropicals. But my other real favorite is hummer and butterfly attracting plants! :-) And I LOVE my little hummer that seems to be here year round.

Working full time with young children doesn't give me much time to have many other hobbies. Making a little time to do gardening seems to suit me just fine for now! :-)

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

HA HA I was going to say that I bet Becky's was MGs first.

here's my first love, quilting. and the one i'm working on.(i placed these on the floor and thats the rug in the background)
i have to make 25 of these squares then I'll put a strip of fabric on all four sides and join them all together.

i'm terribly partial to sunflowers. hummer, bee, and butterfly plants too. vines. there's no way answer that i'm afraid.

Thumbnail by nanniepb
North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

wow nannie. no patience for quilting. my daughter wants me to cut her t-shirts up and make her a memory quilt out of all her old tees.

I LOVE tropicals and vines. I especially loves plumeria and rhipsalis or cerius-like plants. mentioning of that, i need to go out and bring in a few plants. temperature drops tonight.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

lookie here.. I *think* this is a pandurata.. I can't believe I didn't tag it, it just sort of surprised me..
Charleen, if the stems of the seedlings are still green and soft, let them try to re leaf out.. that happened to me.. and mine came back.. don't get too down on yourself.. we have more seeds!
Ronnie, I have tons of coleus, had I known I would have sent you some.. I still can.. let me know..

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Yes, Debra. Lots of seeds. I have so many seeds. I have no fear cause I have
Backup, You wonderful people.
Isn't it fun?? I love it.
Thanks

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Wow! What a lovely quilt, Phyllis! :-) I really like the colors in it! :-)

Debra - OH MY! Will you look at that! I hope you are right! :-)

Charleen - I think those in the swap won't have to worry about MG seeds for quite some time! :-) They will stay viable for many years if they are stored in a cool, dry, and dark place. :-) I store mine at the bottom of my closet. :-)

(Zone 7a)

Patootie, yup it is a great selection of seeds - always fun to see newly enabled mg lovers along with the old having fun. I'm afraid I already did my enabling in the last couple of years with my 2007 harvest - some of you may still have some of those. Here's hoping for a great year ahead of us so we can all continue the wonderful pass-along traditions of this forum.

karen

MGs are my favorite, but although I don't have the patience to make a quilt either, I think they're one of the most magical art forums around - lot of love goes into those.

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

thank you. but no more love goes into them than goes into our gardens, don't cha' think?
i'm not sure what to think about people (me) who cut up yards and yards of fabric only to sew it all back together again =) sometimes my brain just can't handle all the clutter, but mostly i work on them in the winter when there's no gardening to do.

I had a Dr's appt. today and at the end of the visit he asked me if i was Wintersowing again this year and then the subject of MGs came up. now i'm gonna have to give him some seeds or start some for him.

i need to make a list of my favorites and start saving pictures. but we have too much winter ahead of us...much to be done before MGs.

man, i am pooped. moe and i are gonna watch Lost in bed. since its the last season and I am still LOST

(Zone 7a)

Nannie, my doctor's receptionist loves those Cameo Elegance MGs, with leaves so dramatically splashed with cream - I think Atenkley called that the "crystal gene" - Scroll down to April 11, 2009 on his webpage here - http://atenkley.wordpress.com/category/japanese-morning-glory/princess-project/ . Arlan explains the crystal gene and hopefully will have y'all hooked on this fascinating aspect of morning glories.

We don't have a tv in the house, so you really cracked me up just now with that phrase "Lost in Bed" lol - rather a terrifying phrase actually to those of us getting more and more decrepit with passing years. I'll bet the real thing isn't scarier grrr

karen

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

awww Nannie.. LOL Quilting is something I have never done.. my Great Aunt and Grandma did alot of it for charity .. like about 300 quilts in a few years time, I made a quilted clowns costume when one of my daughters was young, but thats it.. I have a couple bags of fabric swatches from Lazy Boy and Mayo, you know the ones you look at when ordering furniture special? Well , I THOUGHT I would make some quilts with those, but they are so heavy and hard to cut.. would make great pillows tho;)
Karen, I still have a couple bags of seeds from you, and gerris, and Becky and even Ronnie and Liz still from last year.. I thought I would plant those this next spring..
here is akatsu no yume from you Bluespiral :)

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

don't creak your necks looking at that one up there, I have no clue why that is like that LOL sorry...
here is the mixed container of seeds I started upstairs in the window right now..It is down here now, and new seedlings are up in the south window..If people would just send self stamped bubble envelopes, I would fill them up with alot of stuff.. I am kinda broke now to be sending out stuff, since son got laid off again, I am helping him, hubby on furlough.. I am the Bring Home the Bacon person now ..*ugh* BUT.. life is still wayyyy good for me! ;D

Debra, I could be wrong, but the mg in your photo looks like it belongs to Ipomoea purpurea - that single heart-shaped leaf with no extra lobes looks like purpurea to me. I was out of Ipomoea nil 'Akatsuki no Umi' by the time you came on my radar, so I didn't send that one. Maybe someone else sent you "akatsu no yume"?

The seeds will keep a few years. Personally, I think it's a great idea to hang on to extras, because my seed saving powers have not been very good in the last couple of years.

I am so sorry to hear about layoffs and furloughs in your family - times are so rough on so many these days. It would be great if our elected leaders could focus on the generation of local jobs that make locally used foods, commodities, etc., instead of depending on shipping them from China or across the country. It's been a good idea for a long time, imho.

Thanks for sharing more pics of your winter paradise

Becky, apologies for hijacking your thread - am returning it to its normal programming

karen

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - Sorry to hear about your son's job loss and dh's furlough. I am seeing a lot of that here, too. :-( I hope things improve very soon!

I am not sure which MG vines Karen was talking about, but the 2 photos that you believe might be pandurata don't look like I. purpurea, but the leaves do resemble some of the tri-color I've grown. I don't know or have any experience with pandurata, so not sure how those leaves are supposed to look.

Your gardens indoors and outdoors looks like a bit of paradise! You not only have green thumbs, but all your fingers and toes must be green, too! :-)

Phyllis - LOL! about sharing MGs with your doctor! :-) Was Lost on tonight???? Darn, please tell me I didn't miss the start of the new season. :-/

Becky - was referring to what Debra called "akatsu no yume" here - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=7500741 - wacha think?

Could you start a new thread for slow-dial-up folks? Images make the post count smaller.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Karen - I didn't know which photo you were talking about! Sorry.

You are right ... we have way too many post, time to go to a new thread:

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

you know what i gave up on Lost because i stayed Lost too and thats a bad thing to be lost. i have enough time keeping up with me being lost at times dont need a tv show to keep me that way too. hehehe

i gave up on it when they got off the dang island. me i would stay off it. but no they go back. hehe

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

Karen, LOL. well, to make this further decrepit, moe is my dog. my lil shihtzu. MY bed partner for about 3 years now. ;)~ and not to hijack the thread, cuz it does say 'Group ....Swap discussion up there at the top of the screen, haha, i kinda like decrepit in my old age ..... = O

Becky, nooo. I didnt see it advertised either, I turned the TV on and it was there. I think Lost, the final season, starts next Tuesday. as I said to a friend last night, it was a recap of the recaps. and i'm lost with all the information that scrolls across the screen while the show is on. its like 'Dummies for Lost'.

okok i'm going to the new thread

Rushville, IN(Zone 5b)
