Moonflower is a name for several plants. Just look at the label on the baggies and google the family/species name, not "Moonflower" or "Moonvine". More than one plant has that name.

I too don't like the netting and also pull it off. But doing so sometimes damages those fragile roots. I like the styrofoam cups and usually the entire soil (and plant) contents of the cups comes out in one piece which makes it very easy to transplant with little damage to the vines. :-)

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Do you grow it in peat or soil starter??
I don't care too much for peat. To me it dries out to fast.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Well, I've tried various ways. I've had two methods with good success. I use the peat pots and fill them with either seed starter mix or MiracleGro Moisture Control potting soil. Both of those worked well. But I am leaning more towards the styrofoam cups. Not sure why. I think it is because it keeps the seedlings from going into shock from a major temp change. Or maybe that is baloney. I don't know. Or maybe because it is easier and cheaper. LOL!

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

I start mine in styrefoam cups. Easy to poke holes in and I cover 'em up with the clingwrap, with some starter soil.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I think I goofed!!!! I got Moonvine seeds sprouting. Ain't it too early. I can't believe it!!!
I'm going to have a jungle!!!!

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

LOL! I don't know about you but the moonvine I grew one year produced alot of leaves and I did not get any flowers until LATE summer. Does anyone on here have Spanish Flag vine seeds? I grew them one year and love them but I had a hard frost before the seeds were ripe so I lost them. I only need about 3 or 4 seeds as they germinated well for me. Last year, the deer ate ALL of my moonvines.

There are only a few seeds I have a problem germinating - poppies, stephanotis and clematis.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I'll send yu one!!!!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I use these to start seeds

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I got a bunch of those. How many seed do you put in each little bottle? 1 or 2 seeds.
I have oodles of those drink btls. thanks, girl.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

I did use those last year too, but the styrefoam is much easier. no cutting necessary.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

How easy it is to get the plants out of the bottles to move them outdoors or into larger pots?

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

not too bad. Just scoop 'em out with a hand shovel (whatever it's called).

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Hi alll, I just cut the bottoms if they were bottum up and went ahead and planted them, if they were top down, the whole thing went into the ground.. worked for me and has for a few years.. I only transplanted one and that was the creeper and setosa into a pot.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

HOW MANY SEEDS????
ONE OR TWO IN EACH POT?
i PUT THREE IN ONE POT, HOPE THAT IS NOT TO MANY.
hEATED ICE PIC AND MELTED A HOLE FOR HANGER.
Hit the darn Cap lock again. Will take a picture tomarrow.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Becky, just got done reading the thread and saw what you said about a notice being left for me to pick my seeds up. No notice on either of my doors or in the mailbox....was the envy larger than normal? I never had that happen before....Not a sub mail man that I know of...I'll check to see what happens tomorrow, the may bring them back. I hope so, I hate the main PO where I would have to go!! BOO HOO!

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

They P.O. do try theirselves.
There is no telling where they put the package either.

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

I wasnt sure because we always buy and plant seeds called Moonflowers. it has a real big white bloom with the sweetest smell that only blooms at night. so I wasnt sure if moonvine was the same thing.

the 'moonflowers' were still blooming here in late September. they come back every year at the corner of my Dad's front porch and last year that's where I transplanted some of my JMG and it was amazing. big purple JMGs in the day and white flowers at night. btw, I always knick the seed or hull and soak it in a paper towel over night and once it sprouts, i plant them.

Ronnie - Here is what the tracker link says about your bubble envie. The envie was a standard 8 X 10 inches and everyone else got theirs without any problems, so I don't know why the postman didn't leave it. It did not require a signature.

the lavender one is not as big as the white one. I don't remember if the lavender moonvine has a fragrance to them. I love the white mooflower/moonvine (sorry too lazy to look 'em up).

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Is this the Moonflower vine we are talking about? I. alba?

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

mine is still in processing. hmm

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks Nicole and Debra for explaining how to get the plants out of the bottles. :-)

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

yes. Love those white moonvine, but we got some lavender ones in the swap, I believe. If I remembered correctly, they are very large seeds.

I've sorted through some of my seeds that I'm going to plant. I won't be able to plant 'em all this year. I think I have abou 10 or 12 selected now. So hard to choose. I labeled them and attached photos to the pouch and also saved posted photos on my hard drive. Yeah! I'm going out to buy styrefoam cups tomorrow. I had some but my DH used them for tennis yesterday, 'cause it was so cold and they drank hot chocolates.

Becky, I might need you to help me to determine if they are invasive or not. That way, I can determine which will go in the front or the back, etc... I don't know how I'm going to plant them, by color? decision decision decision...

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

hmm you could always cut down the sides of the bottle with scissors too

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Or a box cutter! Good idea, Marie. Well, hopefully, your envie will be delivered tomorrow.

Is this the lavender Moonvine vines? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/69456/

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Becky, I went out and looked in the box again...no notice, nothing on the ground or on the porch. Only thing I can figure is it was a sub mail carrier and the dogs carried on and they wouldn't put it between the door. I have a regular post mail box with plenty of room. I filled out the redelivery order form online. I'll wait a few days and if it doesn't show I'll take a ride over to the dreaded PO!!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra posted a photo above of a bloom. She must be the one that sent seeds for it! :-)

Debra, do you remember if those hot pink MG's came back the next year? Did you have yours in a flower pot? The reason I'm asking is because I may want to plant something else in that container and I'm concerned about what is coming back....

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Nicole - Which ones are you considering growing this year? We got a LOT of seeds in this swap which should be enough to last everyone several years! LOL! Of course, you can never have enough variety of MG seeds! LOL!

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

gracious....all these photos are gorgeous. do ya'll normally start them indoors in January?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Phyllis - I would say to start them about 2-4 weeks before your last frost date. But a number of folks here grow them indoors in containers in winter. And then just move them outside when the weather warms up. I. nils like warm weather. I. purpureas handle cool weather just fine as long as it doesn't freeze. :-)

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Here is a picture of what I sent...excuse the typo on Hoge Mix!! Should be Hige!

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

i wonder if anyone has counted exactly how many different seeds we did get? I still cant believe how many there were.

I still havent cleaned up the cardinal climber vines on my back porch. i wonder if its possible that the seeds would still be good? we collected so many seeds at my Uncle's that I didnt think we'd need more.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

Becky, I haven't really gone through ALL the seeds yet, so I'm sure they'll be more to add and some to take out!

Milky Way
Akatsu no Mai
Blue Jishi x Ten Ten

Blue Asagao Willow
Rebecca (this one is for my daughter 'cause it's her name)

Hi just got back from taking college girl back to her dorm for the week.. whew! hour there and hour back.. anyhoo.... I use a hole punch to make holes in the tops to hang with, and those plastic water bottles are easy to cut with scizzors.. the two litr bottles I melt with a lighter and punch with a screwdriver when melted for drainiainge, the little ones I just snip the bottom edges in four spots for drainage, sometimes when I plant them outside the roots go thru there and they are fine, the lav moon vines flowers did not have an odor, and the white moonflower is a a datura if it comes back here every year, the moonflower alba does not come back for me, and yes those pinks will come up everywhere, I just pull them out when they pop up.

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

9/13/09 my vines had this color. Does the varigated leaves mean anything?
