So. Calif. Spring RU 2010 - PLANTS

Round Rock, TX(Zone 8b)

KaperC I bet they are naked ladies. Although in their present state they look more like the clothes and not the lady. ^_^ The bulbs I planted were up to softball sized. I traded with a DGer in TX and she took 14lbs of them! Then later another 10lbs a few weeks later. (she was doing a purple and pink bed).

And thank you DP!

Cayte

Round Rock, TX(Zone 8b)

Sylvia which color, the pale or the purple? Or both? I have lots of each.

Cayte

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Oh yes Kathleen, blondie remembers giving you naked ladies! Oh and there's more if anyone wants some.

Round Rock, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh shoot, I forgot, DesertPirate I'd love a Peter Pan Agapanthus? I just kick my self to think that when we moved in to this house six years ago (we got to watch them build it) they landscaped with? Yep, a bunch of Agapanthus. And STUPID me didn't think I'd like them because the builder did have them all over the place like you said. So I (and I am almost afraid to admit it) pulled every last one of them out and threw them away (and yes, you may each give me one good swift kick in the tail at the RU)!

But, in my defense, I wasn't a DG member yet and really can claim ignorance (so you really don't need to give me a kick cuz I'm still bruised from self inflicted ones). sigh If hindsight were 20/20 ya know?

SW I'd love one of those society garlic.

Sylvia, what's the Latin words for 'I'm too darned old to start learning Latin'? That's gonna be my mantra I think. ^_^

Thank you everyone!!!

Cayte

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Cyate if you have any spare Naked Ladies, I would like to try that? 11 looks like some type of Euphorbia to me, but I am not expert at succs, since most freeze here. If I do them, they are coming in in the winter this year.

Donna I would like a Rose Campion. I planted seeds but don't know if they will grow, so one would be nice, just in case.

My wave petunias took off but then it froze so I brought them in, then later put them out after weeks in. So I am not sure how many survived. I may not be able to bring them SW but I will try, if not I will send seeds, they grow from seed easy, but it takes 6 weeks or so. Let me see what I can do.

Nobody besides Donna wanted my Mystic Merlin Malva, I love them. The color is so pretty. They are pretty versatile to me.

Marie, do you still have any bauhinia vine seedlings?

Someone had some cuttings or something from Day Lilies? I love them if you have any of them left.

Cayte do you only like dark Purple, not lavender or Periwinkle?

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh yeah, Cayte, I never heard Spider plants called Airplane plants and I am from Ohio, but never heard grandma call them that. Someone sent me one last year and it froze, I guess. So here they have always been inside plants, just thought I would try. The purple heart was sent to me from Texas, but mine did not make it. I would like to try that one again, even if it is inside. Maybe it was the season she sent it. I don't know.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

I will bring you rain lilies Louise!!

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Cayte - I would like some of lemon geranium and chocolate mint (does it still need to be contained?) and purple fountain grass (several?), snow in summer. Do not think fuchsia or hibiscus do well here. Too hot and dry - but wait, you are only a short distance away, can you grow them? I lean to pink, purple and white but have recently 'allowed' marigolds in 'for medicinal purposes' against plant bugs.

Dawn - I would love some Mystic Merlin Malva, just looked them up and what pretty pruple flowers they have. But you are so busy, you cannot possibly have time to get all those plants together!

Randy - do you have any agapanthus left? If so, count me in.

Kathleen - I would sure like to try Iris, but fear their demise by Sherry's gopher relatives.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Thank you Marie! All of those that you brought me last time didn't do well, maybe you can tell me what I'm doing wrong, no, I know you can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Hemet, CA(Zone 9b)

cayte Regarding the wandering stuff. Mainly I'd like the purple, but will gladly accept the pale also.
Thanks
Sylvia

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Cayte, I have a limited number of the Peter Pan variety of Aggies, but will be bringing enough of the standard sized that probably everyone could take at least one home.

Round Rock, TX(Zone 8b)

Quiltygirl I've got you down for lemon geranium, chocolate mint (and yes it does it still needs to be contained), several purple fountain grass and snow in summer. Regarding the hibiscus, I was given three; orange, pink and red. The orange (planted in the ground) is beside the house and managed to survive the winter with no intervention from me. (dare I get my hopes up and think myself as having a green thumb or is it dumb, beginners luck? I like the former!) Maybe because it's surrounded by all that chocolate mint?

The pink one was near the fence with little protection and I don't see any of it. :-( Maybe it will surprise me and pop up when it gets warmer. That danged red one is in it's original pot on the back porch and just keeps hanging on. Probably because it wants to go home with YOU! No one has claimed it yet my dear. ^_^

Sylvia, I'll bring both colors of the Jewel for you and you take whichever or both.

DP, I really don't mind the larger "Aggies" at all. I am after all an "Aggie" from NMSU. And hey man. Purple is purple!!! ^_^

hellnzn11, I'll bring you several baby planes and purple queens. Below is one of the six mama airplanes I have out back. I think I might have enough babies to share. ^_^ And till I moved to CA I'd never put an airplane outside. My G'mas were all indoor plants.

The extra naked ladies I had are in a pot so I'll just bring it and you guys can have whatever there is in there. I think there are at least six plants.

And I'd love some of your Mystic Merlin Malva! How'd I miss that? My purple radar must have been on the fritz cuz of the rain yesterday. Sheesh!

I also do the entire spectrum of purple. My bedroom is painted purple! My DH doesn't mind cuz he's colorblind (and if ANY of you tell him I will of course completely deny it! HE thinks it's blue!) ;-)

Seventy-one hours and counting!

Thanks Cayte,
I needed the laugh. Blue it is. LOL! My DH is color impaired. He lets me pick out colors and goes along with my choices. Poor guy, I just can't stand white walls.
Purple malva, I forgot who has it, but may I have some, please?
Cayte, those are definitely Nekkid Ladies. Have a whole bunch in my yard. It's best to wait if you can to transplant them until the green leaves die off. They'll send up a spike somewhere between mid-July and mid-August. Before I knew what they were, I called them my Birthday flowers because they always sent up a spike and bloomed for me on my B.day. I've been spreading them around my yard over the last few years. I probably could spare some with no problem. Will ship them where ever when they go dormant before bloom time. They should bloom this year even if transplanted when dormant.
Oh and may I have a piece of Wandering Jewel?
I have some Moses in a Boat? that we can take some cuttings from, I haven't had a chance to work on it, but it's ready for transplanting. It'll be here, and we can easily pot 'em up. I just wasn't sure how with this one plant. A tutorial someone? LOL!
Got to go!

Anyone who wants Society Garlic can have some. Like I did with QG, I'll wet it down if necessary and you can did up a clump to take home. (if you can do the digging I'll find someone who can.) After the RU, I'm going to have DH's guys transplant it so I can use the area for something that doesn't smell so bad! Good news is that nothing eats off of them except bees and b.flys. Varmints won't touch the stuff.

Ok sign me up to dig some ornamental garlic then, I have an area that needs more repelling, near my Cannas.

Ok I have some seedlings that I grew from my seeds from MM Malva. I will bring them because the ones I dig up kind of don't transplant as well. I think they would be alright if I dig up small ones this early but why should I when I have ones that are in my WS milk jug waiting for a new permanent home.

Thanks Cayte.

Anyone see anything different on here? It is on my desk top so I don't forget anything.

Neither of my kids is going to come, but I may ask my dad. I am thinking if I want to though. He will love to spend time with me but he will take up needed plant space. lol

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Aw, come on hellnzn, certainly you can put some plants under his legs and have him hold some. (LOL at the visual!) : - )
He'll take up less space than the kids. Ask him!
What I'd give for one more outing with my Dad. Of course, my Dad would have to have space for all of his camera stuff (taking up my space for plants), but it was always fun to go anywhere with him.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

My dad would take his keyboard and want to sing. lol
No he wouldn't because he is too much of a perfectionist. I may ask him. I just hate to feel like I have to split my attention, when I am meeting new people.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Dawn I think we all can help keep your Dad entertained!! We have some pretty interesting men and women attending!!

I am off to dig Kathleens cactus and Louise's rain lillies. Anyone else need anything?

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Dawn; the Colocasia is Black Elephant ear and the Kangaroo Paw is the green flowered one. I have a very limited number of both as they are being given to me by my son to bring. I don't yet know how many of each he's giving me so I can't promise a particular number. I'll try to squeeze as many out of him as I can. Hopefully everyone who wants some will get them.

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

SW - Maybe DH will dig up some more Society garlic, then I can plant it around my strawbales. No one from the Strawbale Forum thought gophers were a problem with strawbales, but since have seen on a website and from an employee at Armstrong Gardens that I should have put wire beneath them. Will say a prayer, keep fingers crossed and add the garlic. Bunnies have already jumped onto the bales and eaten broccoli and brussels sprouts leaves. I have added bird netting over top and sides and ground beside the bales in hopes they will not want to get tangled in it. I, however, get tangled in it too, as does my oxygen cart, LOL.

Cayte - Not only did you also come from Jamul, but from Cruces too? DH is from there and would like to move back. Did you live there before or after college? My DH is NOT color impaired, but accepts my need not to have bland colors. Here is a sample of the colors looking through the house when we were just moving in. The horses are stamped on pale periwinkle walls of DD's room that include clouds and sun on ceiling and blades of green grass on baseboards. The feature red wall in dining/living room has aged to a darker red. The Tuscan gold room is my garden/quilty room and has purple grape clusters stamped around arches inside the room and lastly is the 2 toned beach master bedroom. Unseen is the guest/DD bath painted lilac with big squares and circles of primary colors.

Looks like we'll all have a lot to talk about. : - )
Your Dad sounds like a fun guy, Hellnzn. Life is short and as Marie said, we'll all help out. I've always liked talking and listening to my elders. You can learn a lot that way. : - )
This rain is good, even if it means that I can't work in the garden. My straw bales have sprouted, QG and I haven't done anything with them because I am waiting for that hardware cloth. Already have evidence of gopher activity in my garden. Sigh. DH is planning on putting up a real fence, soon. That will help.
Still have a couple of plants to dig up/transplant, but otherwise we're looking good for the RU. : - )

SW - my bales were too heavy from warer and would fall apart when we thought we could put the hardware cloth underneath after the fact. Will know to do that first next time. Your stories of your DH's guys' antics always make me laugh! A blessing to have them help, BUT!!!!

Round Rock, TX(Zone 8b)

I lost both of my parents in '08. hellnzn11? Bring your dad! ^_^

quiltygirl, I moved to LC in '90 right after my divorce. Started collage spring of '91. My DH was born and raised there. I met him 12/31/90 (because my younger sisters who were all in collage wanted me to meet this cute young guy they were good friends with!) . Monday will be our 19th anniversary. We moved to CA when our youngest (the one I'm bringing) was nine days old, hmmm so '97.

Sometimes I want to go back too. siiiigh I miss money. sigh Ya know, the money I DON'T have because I live here! ;-)

We are gonna have a lot to talk about!

Forty-six ish hours and counting!

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

SW - we have plenty of manure here, not quite so old,but DH started mounding it 2 mos ago instead of putting it in the green trash can. It is not far from LR slider! Neighbor has well aged manure, from one horse as they never trash theirs. I prefer to go get hers than age it here, what with flies and all. Help yourself. LMK. Also craigslist always has manure available in the free section. Better than having to bring it in bags from so far.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

So true, QG. Cancel that bag of manure. I do have neighbors that still have horses but that's another subject. We'll talk about it at the RU.
OMG, someone is counting the hours?! No pressure, especially since it's been raining all day.
Good news is that I don't have to water! : - )
Been told to rest for a while. I'm kind of tired, so I guess I'll curl up with my adorable cats, and take a short nap.
WIB!
SW

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Please do rest. We don't want to have the RU in your hospital room!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

That I'd like to see! Not really but it appeals to my sense of the ridiculous. I just saw that it's only 48 degrees outside and still showering. Brrr.
Me cats and I just took a nap, and I did rest.

It Will be at least 70, it says. Remember how chilly it was at Kathleen's the beginning of March last year? I am sure it will be warmer. We have frost this AM, hoping veggies doing OK

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

It's only 46 degrees here now. I can't function well, when it is that cold!
Tomorrow will be warmer. All is good. : - )
Cayte is doing the countdown, and she seems like she'll fit right in with out wacky group of individuals. : - )
Thanks KC, and QG. Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

You guys, I did invite my dad but he had another party that he was obligated to, for his friend, supervisor and co-worker's daughter's birthday.

So we are going to chill next week instead.

It is funny coincidentally it got over around the same time as the ones at Dr. Don's house.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I wish I had more conversations and sat to talk with more people, I would have loved to tell others of my rabbit repellent. But you can go to the library or buy this book, called Jerry's Mixers N' Elixirs, it has a recipe book for almost every thing plant related. He has several recipe's for several problems and so I combined several of the repelling ones and put out this concoction that smelled so bad, I got nauseous from it for an hour after.

For example it has a recipe for Weed Wipeout. It takes 1 tbsp of gin, 1 tbsp on vinegar, 1 tsp of liquid dish soap and 1 qt of very warm water, mix all together and pour the solution into a hand help mist sprayer. then drench the weeds to the point of run off, taking care not to spray any nearby plants. Jerry has a web site too.

Let me see if I can find his name and find some of the info I posted elsewhere, so I don't have to type it all again.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Okay, during the plant exchange yesterday, I lost some names of plants and who gave them to me. I'll be posting photos later, and asking who and what. : - )
Hellnzn, there is never enough time to discuss everything that you want to, or to do everything that you want to. Return visits here are allowed, ya know! : - )
It's not always as pretty as it was yesterday, but I think our place is always beautiful.
Back later with photos of plants I don't remember names of, or who they were from or supposed to go to? (There was a grouping on a table that looked like someone had forgotten their booty. I set those aside until I hear back from everyone. Otherwise, I'll find them new homes.)
Had a great time yesterday! : - )

Look what I got from Donna! I took 4 cuttings of this (thank you Rodica) and Rodica potted them for me. Keep your fingers crossed I get some nicely rooted rose.
This is Eden. (...and if I don't say so myself, that picture turned out really nice. It's a bud I took from Donna's.)

Here's my side yard I planted with the loot from the RU. Heather gave me a red hibiscus and 2 petunias and Rodica and Marie brought me lots of rain lilies. Also got oxalis from Rodica, all planted and doing great! Thanks so much.
(Well you sure can't see all the plants very well in this picture but they're there!
The fushia from Heather is also planted but the picture didn't come out. Will shoot one later. )

Louise, that looks very nice. I love how you placed your treasures. I am just surprised not to see any of your 'poopies' in the picture. :O)
I want to thank the person that sent me the breath of heaven and I can not find the name. I hope that I will find it so I can have the name posted near the plant's tag. Thanks again to all of you for your generous gifts. They will be treasured and taking very good care of. They were all planted as soon as I got home.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Louise, you know I put more b1 on those tobacco plants and the darn things perked up and look like they will be fine, even if I don't cut them. I am crossing my fingers. Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up on the B1.
