So. Calif. Spring RU 2010 - PLANTS

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

You tell those boys I have a wand and I was trained at Hogwarts!

OK, will bring the bulbs for you. There are enough you can each take some of both home. Glad to finally have something somebody wants!

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Ok Dawn, one is yours. I still haven't dug them out and hope they're ok when I give them to you.
Yea Marie, your epi's made it through the sword boys!

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Just got a call from Carson (DS) last night and he told me he has a "load" of things he's been propagating for me to take to the RU. Some among them are Green flowered Kangaroo Paw and Colocasia (black elephant ear) I have no idea how many he'll have, but I'll bring what he gives me and all of you can decide who gets what.

DP You should be proud, you taught him to propagate cuttings...Ozzy plants too, I feel so misty right now. I could not teach either of mine to be very interested in gardening, but my granddaughter Baily has already helped Grandma water and dig in the dirt.

Thanks Weeg and Kathleen.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Thanks Kathleen. I love that epi and I have some succes rooting them.
Does anybody know where I can buy Melianthus Major ? I am in love with that plant and so far , I do not have much luck with it. One of these days I will be able to have one big as Louise's or Marie's.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Wish I could take credit for that Dawn, but he learned that from Mira Costa College or Cal Poly or just doing it on his own. I do like to think I helped him learn a love of plants, but his education and curiosity are his own.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Thought of something else today. With all the talk about shade trees, does anyone (with the room) want some seeds for a Tipuana tipu tree? Ours is full of seed pods and I understand they are easy to germinate. I can supply a ton of them for experimenting! It's a beautiful tree and ours rarely gets summer water now. Grows pretty quickly, too. This time of year it looks raggedy, as it's losing its leaves and all we can see are pods, but soon it will be back to its glory. Gets loaded with yellow blossoms and is sometimes called Yellow Jacaranda.

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/67862/

I also have a few evening primrose offshoots. They need a little protection from the sun, but ours do fine under our Chitalpa tree. They are the best thing to see first thing in the morning!

Marie and Dawn, wait until you see those bulbs I dug up!

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

I will take some seeds :o)

Hemet, CA(Zone 9b)

KaperC Primrose yes we want some.
Sylvia

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

OK, Primrose for Sylvia and a bag of seeds for Marie and anyone else who wants them.

Hemet, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks KC

Wow, I thought those were almost as invasive as those Tree of Heaven things, well, maybe not that much, but I do see them all around town and grow where the seeds drop. We only just started to have some grow on our side of a neighbors fence. Pretty trees though and do grow fast.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

That surprises me, Lynda. We've never had a single seed sprout at our place. Also, they are not listed by CA as invasive to my knowledge.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Randy that is awesome about your son. I hope one of my five will learn a litltle something about gardening.

Hi all!

This is so much fun! I can't wait till Saturday! These are some of the things I have to offer. I don't know the names of a lot of them but I can send pictures.

Rooted
***Lemon Scented geraniums--lots and lots
***Chocolate Mint--lots and lots and lots and lots. Oh, and did I mention...LOTS!
***Purple Queen (or Purple Heart) same as LSG
***purple fountain grass--probably 25 or more
***baby king palms--five or more. They are volunteers from a big garden box full of soil I got from Freecycle so I keep finding them everywhere. Not sure they are actually kings but the box was out under a huge one so I'm assuming that's what they are.
***Lambs ear
***snow in summer--again lots
***airplane plants (I'm sure everyone has a ton of these but I have some really pretty bright green striped ones)
***wandering jew, or jewel (DG has them listed as the same)

Rooted bulby things
***eight fans of some kind of purple flax

Are you sensing a theme here?

Seeds
***two what, pods, of Jacaranda tree seeds not yet popped open

Red stuff (yuck, me no likey red)
***one little pathetic red petunia (has white frills around each flower). Came in my flat of purple petunias (and no, you can't have any purple ones! ;-) I'll wear my t-shirt and you'll find out why. ^_^ )
***one red flowered hibiscus in a two (I think) gallon pot
***one (if it survives this next week) fuchsia.

And finally, anybody need a great dog? Seriously I have foster Anatolian Shepherd/dobie cross looking for a home. I'm an opportunist and ask everyone. I'd bring him if I could. See him at http://www.nasrn.com/Western.htm second one down, names Koa. Sorry, couldn't resist.

^_^ And if you're brave enough to have read to the end of this DP then I'd love a Colocasia (black elephant ear) if you have any left.^_^

And to anyone else I love purples, yellows, purples, oranges, purples, purples, white and purple flowering anything.

And whew! I think I'm done! If I find anything else I'll add them to the list.

Nite all!

Cayte

Oooooh Cayte, can I have the fushia?!?!?

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Cayte, I too am manic about purples. I have a million calendulas, if I can dig some up, if you want some orange. They are cool since they bloom non stop, even here in the high desert.

Purple flax if you have any unspoken for Cayte, Lemon scented geraniums and purple fountain grass, I would love a couple of them, since I am adding grasses this year, since I came up with a concoction that is repelling the vermin pretty well thus far. What is an airplane plant? I don't believe I have it, since I don't know what it is. It may not grow here.

I have two meetings at work tomorrow and Wed., some other late night thing on Thursday with my church home group, and now my job has some goodbye party Friday, which I want to attend but I don't know how to do it all. I may be able to start digging up plants early in the morning before I come to the RU, and may dig a few others, like the trees tomorrow after work. I have to make the lemon bars too. Lord have mercy. I can't imagine what SW is going through.

I have some other orange plants, but I don't know what they are called any more. I need to try to take pictures of them. They are some common thing but pretty.

Hemet, CA(Zone 9b)

Speaking of purple. Would anyone like to have purple iris?

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

I love purple too. I would love some of the flax and fountain grass.

Now if I could only bring that dog home with me!! OMG he is so cute!!! Tell mehow do you hand le giving them up to adoption. I am not sure I would ever be able to foster a dog or any other animal. Heck when my DH tries to sell my chickens I get upset!!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Cayte, I would love a purple flax, chocolate mint and lemon scented geranium.
I hope you find a good home for that cute dog.

Thanks

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Would anyone like some Rose Campion? I have a few babies. It is a biennial, so it will flower next spring.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Me Donna!!

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Last call for easter lily cactus and bauhinia vine seedlings. I need to pot them tonight to be ready for their tripo on Thursday. The crinums are not ready to be divided so I will save them for the fall So. Cal round-up.

Does anyone need any cannas?

Donna, I would like one too.

Thanks.

Hemet, CA(Zone 9b)

Donna Put me down for Rose Champion.

Thanks,
Sylvia

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Gotcha down ladies.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Did someone say Elephant ear, or Chocolate Elephants ear? I've been looking all over for one of any kind. Make my day, DP!
I'm kinda overwhelmed right now getting things ready, so other than the elephants ear, I am good.
(Maybe! LOL!)

Okay I've got everybody down for what they needed (cuz plants ARE a need not a want correct?)

weegy12 --fushia (If I don't kill it. I'm really trying hard not too!)

hellnzn11 --Purple flax, Lemon scented geraniums and purple fountain grass. My DH just pointed out to me that there are/were only two people on the planet that know what an airplane plant is. Me and my grandmother (who's been gone for almost 30 years), so I guess just me. I don't know where we got the name airplane but that's all I've ever known it to be called. Maybe it's an east coast thing? I was born in Virginia.

Airplane plant = spider plant. Sorry about that. I keep forgetting. I'd be surprised if you don't have any. They are a staple no? ^_^

I'd love to have 999,999 of your one million orange calendulas. If you an spare that many ;-)

marieortiz --flax and fountain grass. I've had Koa since late October. That's why he's marked urgent. If he doesn't leave soon he may not. I have two other Anatolians (that I adopted from NASRN) so with three big 110+/- pound dogs, well, you can see where it may be cost prohibitive. Everything going to him is robbing me of plant money!

SW --Lemon scented geranium and chocolate mint.

Marie I'd love a bauhinia vine seedling if you have one to spare.

RODICAP --purple flax, chocolate mint and lemon scented geranium

dillansnana Sylvia I'd love some purple iris.

And DesertPirate I don't know if you saw it in my book length post above but just in case you didn't I'd love Green flowered Kangaroo Paw and Colocasia (black elephant ear) if you have any left over.

Thanks everyone!

Cayte

KaperC take a look at my bulbs and compare them. I got them from Freecycle and just planted them last fall so have not gotten any blooms. But I was told they were naked ladies. HTH

Thank you Cayte! I appreciate it.

Round Rock, TX(Zone 8b)

Okay, here goes with a few more including some of the succulents I have to share. I'm just going to post pictures since I don't know the names of most of them. Hope that's okay. I numbered them so if you want one maybe tell me the number (and by all means the name!).

This pic is of six of them. I know #9 is burros tail. Number 8 is fortunately in it's original pot. It's called "Angel Wings" Opuntia microdasys albata (good grief! do you guys really talk that way? ;-). The rest I used to know but of course didn't write down anywhere (that I could remember anyway). Thanks!

Number 4 are the offspring of #3. All those little pips popped out along the edge and I just brushed them off into the pot they are currently in. They have more that tripled in size. Thanks!

Number 6 is a ghost plant and I have a lot. Don't know #5. It's a volunteer from one of my garage sale-ing sprees. But they both are choking the life out of the barrel cactus they came potted with.

Thanks!

I don't know if these count as succulents or not. I think #2 is a creeping charlie? Maybe? Anyway, the plant in this picture is over five feet long (it's actually two plants side by each) and trailing on the ground.

I think #1 is the wandering Jew or jewel. The pot said jewel, DG says both. I guess it's a PC thing? Anyway, the pic is deceiving because I just re-sized #2 to fit next to #1.

Cayte

And last but not least. Thirteen is another Wandering Jewel. It is actually the parent of #1. No kidding! Number 1 gets no sun, #13 does. Cool!

I would love to have some of your wandering jewel.
Sylvia

P.S. Yes the DG'ers do talk that way. I'm a newbie also and have not gotten up to speed yet. The DG's are very tolerant and kind to us newbies.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Kathleen, I hope you have a couple of bulbs for me. :O)

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

If anyone has rain lilies, I'd like some, I can't seem to get mine to take but will try again. Thanks...Marie, got extras??!!?

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Rodica, there's enough for the three of you. Also, I have your plant from Sherry - it's a beaut!

Cayte, I think they might be Naked Ladies - and I might have gotten them from Weegy. What about it, Blondie - do you remember giving any away? They have not bloomed for me, but they were not in a very good spot. They are very big round bulbs.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Cayte and Jules, I have you on the list.
