So. Calif. Spring RU 2010

hellnzn11...................So look forward to meeting you even without that Sopilla Cheese Cake, especially since I know where you live since passing by your desert town last fall and continuing to pray for youz all and job situations.

Sign me up. Likely DH will be there too. He is even starting to remember names, well maybe just JD's, and remembering some by description. Jules, I have to remind him of the Bob Nett's funeral we went to before your place where he dug up the Society Garlic. BTW, if you still have more you want to get rid off, I will take some.

Jules, if your go to the Phoenix RU, it is best to get reservations for even the humblest motel before you go. We learned our lesson in Phoenix and Tucson one time driving to NM. March and Apr are Spring Break and (mostly Mar) Spring Training.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Always good to know qg. If I am able to go to Phoenix, I will book in advance.
About your DH, there are some days that I draw a total blank on things too. Especially, if it was a stressful time. I must have missed something there? What happened to your DH?
Lots of Society Garlic, available. Smelly stuff, but it is pretty to look at, and nothing eats it. At least not around here.

Funny. Nothing happened to him, he just does not remember names unless they are someone HE works with or has something in common with (like Mike) and since he has absolutely no interest in gardening and is not usually aware there is one, he does not remember names. Rather than use a name, I have to proceed to describe the situation in which he met that person.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm bad at names, but remember faces. I admit to it, and often ask for a person's name again. It's not unusual, and I also laugh at myself when asking which often breaks the ice, and I have some interesting conversations then.
You can come by any time for the Society Garlic. : - )
Hope you are feeling better!

Good to see you "guilty" girl...SoCal reminded me that I had posted your name that way...but..hey...my eyesight is OLD too. Jo

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Jo - not only had you posted it that way, but I found I had been discussed when you wrote to me saying you were nominated to ask me what I was 'quilty' of! Pretty funny, but it has happened elsewhere too.

Crossville, TN

LOL I'm glad you have a sense of humor!! Hugs Jo

You know if you want to let more people know, put in your town or zip to find others in your area and dmail them to invite them to the RU, if we all did it and put in a certain radius from our home, we could cover a lot of SOCAL.

Why isn't Donna posting, she is usually all over this site. :(..

I see people that everyone knows well from daves like PalmBob, why does he not come? Does anyone know? There are some others in the SanFernando valley that don't come, we need to spread the word guys. I am going to ask my friend to come with me named Tara from Simi.

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Hi Dawn,

Yes, I am here and watching everyday. lol
I have been involved in helping with our RU's for about 6 yrs. now and I decided this year to bow out and let some others take over for a change. I have spent many hours over the years doing exactly what you mentioned with inviting all of the SoCal people. Some are nice enough to email back saying they can't come and then some I just never hear from. Many of our local members are not into meeting others, they just come to Daves for info or to share with others. That is fine, but at least we invite them.

Everyone is always welcome and it's so nice to meet new members and to visit with the ones we have met before. It's just a nice gathering of gardeners to chat and share garden stories.

I look forward to seeing you again this year.
Donna

Ditto what Donna said. One year we split the whole of Southern California and each dmailed a specific group. I sent my old list out for this one, but haven't seen any replies. It was all I had time for this time. I know Jules contacts new members and I have done so, too. Everyone, please encourage folks on the other forums to come - sometimes they don't visit the CA forum, just the special ones they are interested in. We had several newbies show up last March at my place and now they've become friends - you know who you are! LOL

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Yep; I was one of the newbies at your place last Spring.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh funny. I know what you mean. The first month or two on dg I emailed all those in my area with in 40 minutes of me and tried to meet or go to the home and garden together and nobody emailed me either, but one guy in Bakersfield and we talked about gophers and that was the extent of our contact too.

You are right, there are social people who connect with the people and want to know those people as we see them as friends, most of the time. There are those who this is just business and information.

It is fun anyway, easier to handle if a smaller group goes anyhow.

Crossville, TN

I tend to be anti=social...don't you agree? I mean...until I get to know somone. Jo

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I was a newbie last year, my own self. I have been having some computer problems as you all know by now, but through the friendships I've made and phone #'s exchanged I was able to keep in touch with my DG friends and family.
I was hoping to entice PalmBob with an unusual Cactus I can get cuttings from. I was told it was rare, but have to go back with my camera and get photos to show him.
There are a lot of reasons that people can't come, some of us have physical handicaps that make traveling difficult. Some have active family lives, and families are welcome, but if your kids are into sports your Saturday's are automatically taken up with the kids. That's a good thing, you know.
This is what I do know. Everyone is welcome to attend the Round Up. We don't have a theme unless you want to call keeping it rural a theme.
I highly recommend that people dress in good walking shoes and their most comfy pants (Do not wear white. It will not be white when you leave!), in case we go walk about or on a photo safari. We do have several large picnic tables, a bbq, and a portapotty. Water and limited electricity is available as is overnight camping for anyone who wants to. Which might make it more fun or easier for some DG'ers to attend. We also have a fire ring and fire wood.
We are coming together to enjoy each other's company, share a meal, swap seeds and plants, share stories, laughs, and our knowledge. I learn the most interesting things from chance conversations. Sometimes it's years before I need that knowledge, but it's amazing how it is there when I do need it. My biggest regret is that so many of our friends up in NO. CA can't make it down for the RU. That would be a real treat!
Hoping that everyone who can attend, will attend, and enjoy themselves.

SW

I know I think it is sad too about NorCal.

Joe you are a mousy little thing and it is hard to get you out of the house.

Crossville, TN

I know..but I'm working on it. Jo

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Are there any RU's in Northern California?

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Not much since they've had the LBAM quarantine (light brown apple moth).....if you can't move plants, it sorta cuts into the fun of an RU.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh yes it would for sure.

Anyone starting seeds already besides me? I just started a few last week and the yarrows are up already, nothing else yet, but it is cool. I want to do more asap. I got a lot of seeds but need to go to Michaels and get tags or something better than what I have been using.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

I was wondering if anybony kows where can I get a Breath of Heaven 'Sunset Gold' (coleonema pulchrum).
Louise took us to several nurseries, but I was unable to find any.

Thanks

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

That is a cool looking plant.

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Rodica, I will look around at some of my nurseries here for you.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

I saw it last year at a nursery near me for $8 for a gallon.....Donna, I'll go look today.....
Rodica, would you want one or two if they have it?

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

If either are you can find a 1 gallon ( or smaller) Romneya coulteri would you please pick it up for me?

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

RODICAP.....got your coleonema Sunset Gold. I got two, if you don't want two, that's fine, I'll keep one for myself.....if you want both, that's fine also. The nursery is close and I love any excuse to go by (BUY) there, I can get another for myself, they had plenty. They're $9 a gallon.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Thanks Donna and thanks WG. I am so glad that you found it in one gallon pot. I would love to take them both but I know I will have more plants to carry on the plane so if you want to keep one it would be great.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Okey-dokey....

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I'm hoping to make it to the round up. Haven't heard about the MRI on DH shoulder yet, so that is up in the air for right now. It is giving him a lot of pain and will be glad to have the problem solved.

It is raining and the sweet peas are getting very close to the top of the iron gate. I took a picture, but haven't put it in the computer yet. Send pic later.

Hemet, CA(Zone 9b)

Samigal..................Good to hear from you! I've been missing your input. Pray all is well with DH and looking forward to seeing you both at the RU.
Sylvia

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

K, Jer will be coming with me.....

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Just as well you don't post since there is a lot of concern lately about the new IB company and pictures.

I never heard of that plant, I don't recall, but I am going to look it up, since you guys can grow alot of what we grow.

Are you being drown yet Rodica and Marie? We are having so much rain. It is great for us and our plants but not for the burn areas. Poor people. They just get it coming and going.

I wanted to winter sow but it is too messy in my house. so I will wait, just have a few things going and only two germinated and I have sprouts, both white yarrow and some other kind too.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Well, darn I lost my post. Something I should be used to by now.

Hi Sylvia, I've been lurking around here and enjoying all the talk. I thought by now DH would have had the appointment for the MRI, hoping first part of the week we will hear something.

Here is a picture of the iron gate I got from JasperDale with my sweet peas growing up, the rains have really helped. I planted them the first part of October and by spring I should have some lovely flowers.

Ignore the "junk" behind the gate. Got the section of white picket fence from JasperDale too, it hasn't gotten around to the back yard yet.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Very cool, Pegi ! Glad you were able to make use of that gate ! :)

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Don't you love seeing your 'found' items in use, JD? :-)

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Yup !

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

No rain yet. I am hoping for some tonight or tomorrow. I hate to waste such a nice chance for rain.

Hemet, CA(Zone 9b)

Does anyone going to the RU have " snow on the mountain"..Euphorbia marginata Kilimanjaro seed?
Thanks,
Sylvia
