Coffee Break #29 - Halfway through January

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

That may mean job security for sure, they couldn't afford may lay offs! LOL Ric

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Reminds me of a great exchange between Chico and Groucho in Animal Crackers:

Spaulding: What do you fellas get an hour?
Ravelli: For playing, we get-a ten dollars an hour.
Spaulding: I see. What do you get for not playing?
Ravelli: Twelve dollars an hour.
Spaulding: Well, clip me off a piece of that.
Ravelli: Now for rehearsing, we make special rate. That's-a fifteen dollars an hour...That's-a for rehearsing.
Spaulding: And what do you get for not rehearsing?
Ravelli: You couldn't afford it. You see, if we don't rehearse, we a-don't play, and if we don't play (he snaps his finger) - that runs into money.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

LOL! They were funny! Those shows should be rerun.

Victor and Polly
I am not a Kinkaide fan,and neither are my highly talanted artist friends who have work in many large galleries and museums.
Does the Smithsonian impress you?(American Crafts section)
It makes me see white noise just to look at his work not to mention think about how he has colossally ripped of the American public.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

But how do you really feel, Jo?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I must remember the wise words on my Horoscope today.

Guess we don't know as much as the highly talented artists, Celeste! ^_^

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

This is not an original. It is a cheap reproduction, selling for over$ 800.00
it measures 16x18 approx no frame.
http://www.thomkinkadegallery.com/content/p/8/pid/2200/catid/1031/Bloomsbury_Cafe

We cross posted Victor. My point is that artists of really good talant are having a hard time making a living with prices one forth of what he commands just because he is marketed on a grand scale. Its like a hyped movie like "Its Complicated" that people rush to ,and then there are independant films that are well crafted and presented honestly that dont get the big houses, The Coen brothers come to mind with their first films like Fargo..
Anyway if people want a Kinkaide because they love misty little cottages thats fine by me, but dont stamp them with a signature and sell them for hundreds of dollars proclaiming them to be hand painted and sighned, just because a employee dashed a bit of white on the fence.
Calanders and mugs and candles that sell for less are fine. Its the suckers who pay eighthundred dollars for a reproduction that are being ripped off.
To each his own.I am a snob when it comes to the art I collect. Its original and comes from many people I have met and admired over the years.
No repros on my walls.
There I said it.

joann i agree with you - they look like they came out of a grimm's fairytale - very unrealistic - has made in china all over them - remind me of the mass produced paintings you can buy of the greek islands they sell on the streets there

and this is the cleaned up version of how i really feel about them:)

again to each his/her own.

South Hamilton, MA

Kincaid is an original, but the pics remind me of the 'starving artists' pics where a different person does different parts & it's sold at hotels as discount art. Not for me, but I don't collect art. It's just that it isn't my style. But if everyone liked the same thing, there would be no art at all.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's certainly not in the league of great artists and I would never buy a print, but they're nice for calendars, etc.

South Hamilton, MA

Prints can be fine. Our house is full of them, birds etc. & horses handed down from older generations of the family. Do have family photos as well, but many of them sit in frames, bdc=before computers.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I love the misty cottages. That's what I want my yard to look like, and that's why I think I'm attracted to them.

I have no Thomas Kinkade prints. I have other stuff, all Christmas items, like the trees, and the new railroad in a globe.

And yes I know they're pricey, and probably will never increase in value, but it's the one thing I collect.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i remember you showed us those at christmas - very nice

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I think I showed the other two I have, not sure, but sorry if I duplicated. I've never been much for anything collectible, and just got into these.

But I do understand all the controversy about Kinkade, and he has a whole slew of painters, apparently that paint for him. I just really like the misty English style.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

They make pleasant garden scene. Most popular painters even back in good old days had apprentice artist doing a lot of the work on paintings. They would come in at the end an put the finishing brush strokes on. I say if it makes you smile or think, it's a good painting.
On another note, has everyone noticed we do not have to turn the lights on as early any more? Getting closer people.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Anyone else heard about this? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1070861/

I had heard also....it's sad. What will become of us??

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

will have to wait and see and hope for the best

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I guess it depends on what company did the buying out. You all know how other web sites have gone a little down hill after a big company took over. I think the members say in how things are run or changed will be greatly diminished unfortunately. Poor Dave must be just stunned.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Okay, now it's out. I heard about it too. We'll all have to see what shakes out. Can't say I'm surprised. I had a feeling this would eventually happen when NameMedia bought DG.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Interesting that it surfaced on the sewing forum!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Let me just say this - worst case scenario - it really goes down the tube and ceases being what we have all come to know and love about it. In that case, we can look for a new venue where we can continue our silliness. I am confident we can do it. No one's breaking us up!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

who are you callin silly?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

ohhhh krapp

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

There's a spot on the Thomas Kinkade site....

I hope there are not a lot of new rules and regulations, I don't do well with a lot rules and regulations, unless I think they make sense.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Neither does Jo!!
