Coffee Break #29 - Halfway through January

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

LOL you guys crack me up... will look forward to the dream home visit!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'll let you know, Allison. ^_^

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

And with that extra $500K, I'll have enough money to pay for tickets for anyone wanting to come for the RU!

Karen

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ha! That $500K plus more will be going to Uncle Sam.

This is the first year, I'm NOT entering the HGTV sweepstakes. Not my style. My favorite one was the one in Lake Lure, NC a few years ago.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm going to win it anyway, so no sense the rest of you entering. It's not my style either. But there must be at least some profit to be realized if you sold it, now that there is cash attached to the deal.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

There was always profit in it - almost every one has been sold. The income and property taxes are way too high to keep.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I don't remember them offering cash before though. I remember people said they had to sell the houses to pay the taxes. Was there a cash offer attached before?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Cash has been added the past few years, but that also adds to the total value of what you owe taxes on.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Thinking more realistically...
I want this house!!!

Nice, except for the pool. ^_^

I would lose the awnings.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I agree with you, Victor about the upkeep and property taxes being way too high. I would like a much larger piece of property with a less expensive house, so I would sell it, too. It is my style, but I don't need something quite that big, and definitely not that expensive.

No, Jen, definitely not my style, and not enough property with that one. I would rather be further out in the country.

Here's a place in NM that I liked. The price is good and taxes are low. Has 5 acres and views. A lot of potential.

At least 500K would give you a couple hundred thousand to work with. If some of the previous winners only had say 5,000 in the bank, where would they go with one of those homes. The cash might give them some needed time to get taxes figured out, and get the property listed for sale.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Nice views on that house, Karen

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

You got that right, Polly. Whatever's left over from the cash after taxes would go to pay the taxes on the cost of the house and the car. I'd end up selling both.

For years I wanted to move out to the middle of nowhere, but now with kids that are 7 and 3 I'd like some other kids around for them to play with. I'll buy my house with acreage when they are out of the house.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

That's a nice one, isn't it, Jen? If I won the dream home I'd sell it and buy something like this. Then I'd have plenty of money left over.

Karen

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I don't have kids to worry about, and now I'm getting started in a home based business where I'll be able to live anywhere I want and not have to commute to a job, eventually, that is. We will see.

My brother lives in NM & I consider it too darn hot. Never mind AC, I would like to garden & don't want to wake up at 5 am to do it.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Lucy votes no, LOL.

South Hamilton, MA

You bet.

If I won I would just sell it and go some place that has better dirt.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Was thinking the same thing Sherrie!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The total value of the prize is over 2 million, so there will be nothing left of the cash after paying income taxes (don't forget the state too). You have a year to sell before owing the taxes so there is no immediate rush.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What's annoying is that there are often rules that will not allow you to rent. That's the only way I could see being able to keep it.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

big election here today - and as anyone from MA here can tell you regardless of who they will be voting for it will be nice not to have 8 - 10 political phone calls a day, 2 -3 of them pollers - I've had a couple hang up on me when i ask them what polling organization they are calling from and where, which i thought strange - and the TV stations are going to miss selling ad time - we have been inundated!

and i have never seen such shameless negative ad's by the leading party in MA - probably will cost their candidate the election

Speaking of polling my husband got one from the Gallup Pole the other night. I said to him "how did they get your name"? Hes not registered to vote and basically dont exist in anything. He gets no junk mail - nothing. Well - unemployment STILL.

Jan 1st turned into Jan. 18th and the 18th turned into the 25th and he still aint got a call.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Talk about feeling comfy!

Sometimes they get your name from taxes or having a driver's license... I heard...

how cool was that dnut?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Circled around the house???

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Did I mention that we saw the torch yesterday and it was cool? Ran by on the main road. I didn't even think it was going to be near us which is why it was quadrily exciting. I SHOULD have done my Gardener's Tribute to the Olympics Dance for the torchbearer now that I think about it! ps I'm SO hoping this doesn't quadruple. Was there a shift in the matrix today that I missed?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Should have run after it to toast your buns!
