I know it Lynnie! And driving the Hot Wheel sports model, with jet engine ,they were sky high all ready! Grin....too much power under the hood for little old me.

Jesup, GA

I dont know for sure,I think the NyQuil may have something to do with my driving. Grin...Guess I'll see you guys later. My sister should be here soon. We are going to a sale. And going some where to eat after....of course I'm game if some thing to eat is involved..LOL..Have a good day every one! I'll catch up later.

Dronfield, United Kingdom

Hi,Smiley,Lynnie,by "grit I mean,a sort of salty/sandy compound to melt snow/ice on the ground.....we'd say road grit.I've heard of "Grits",but I don't know what they are,only that they're edible:},and can't be like grit.
Dixie, have a good time with your sister.

(Zone 5b)

Joy don't be too sure that the grits aren't gritty *grin*

Man missed another BW race shoot! Dixie yours may be more up to date but mine will still put you in the rear :-) Joy you are not missing anything, grits are nasty in my book, but not considered a southern folk unless you eat em so don't tell anybody lol. Lynnie and Smiley glad you are back home and safe. Bet JJ is still cussin lol. Been switching internet, phone, and tv pkg before it runs out and they stick me with a surprise bill. Think I could have passed a law quicker lol. OK time for a bite of something catch yall a little later.

Dronfield, United Kingdom

flowers,Lynnie,or anyone,what actually are grits?

(Zone 5b)

it's like a corn meal porridge, maybe....it's corn meal made into an oatmeal type dish

I've tried blood pudding over there, Joy...it's a toss up as to which I would eat again lol

Grits are a staple of the Native Americans and Southerners. There are two varieties, Yellow grits made from the whole corn kernel, and white or hominy grits made from just the kernel. Here is a link with a bit of info/history.

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-grits.htm

We enjoy grits prepared a number of ways, but mostly just cooked up with a little butter and maybe a bit of good cheddar added. Just like my mom would chill leftover mashed potatoes to make fritters, we use leftover grits, packed into a greased loaf pan, chilled and then turned out and sliced. They are then dipped in batter and skillet fried. For regular meal, with a bit of salt, pepper or even gravy (eaten more like fritter) or as a breakfast/dessert where the sliced grits are dipped in a sweet batter, or just skillet browned and served like pancakes with jam or maple syrup.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Hello all. Saw the word grits and just had to explain....grin....close to polenta in texture. A staple around here....first potatoes, then corn ....grin

Glad you all made it home okay. JJ....so sorry you had to walk in that kind of weather. Shows your true nature cuz you didn't say...can't do it....grin Sweet and loyal and just a touch crazy....grin

(Zone 5b)

polenta I smother in spaghetti sauce, peppers and pepperoniand parmesan cheese...I don't think that's done with grits. Maybe tomorrow I'll put a pot of sauce on, too late now.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

You certainly can fix grits that way Lynnie. It is a very versatile food. Mostly the difference comes in that now days grits are mostly made from the white Hominy kernel. Traditionally grits were yellow....Corn was ground and sifted...the fine stuff that fell through the sifter was corn meal, the remaining "gritty" pieces were boiled into porridge, cooked with shrimp or pork and served with gravy or a red sauce.

(Zone 5b)

but it's not the traditional way to eat it, is it? Now i'm craving polenta....you guys are making me hungry!

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

ummmm just had me some fritters, here we call them potatoes cakes, and fried cornbread with onions is called cornbread fritters. I like all corn, but not hominey which not sure is a bean, may be another type of corn either way grits have the consistancy of cream of wheat (which I do like) and is a breakfast food. considered hot cereal almost, just eat it on the side with bacon and egss. Just give me my eggs and bacon or bagels and cream cheese please. Joy what do yall eat? And are you big coffee drinkers like us? Heres ya a cup JJ, warm those toes. Never had polenta either. Bet you never had apple butter either. Good stuff spread on a bisquit.

Dronfield, United Kingdom

Moon, thanks,I've looked at the website and your own explanation and now I know :}.It does seem very like Polenta, which I believe is also used a lot in some Italian dishes, from the North of Italy, maybe I think.I never remember it being available when I was a child, but noticed it about 20 years ago
Lynnie,I've never and will never try,Black Pudding, that's what it's called in my part of country,I know it's same as blood pudding cos it's made of pigs blood and some other equally horrific ingredients, with lumps of white fat in.You were braver than I'll ever be Lol
Potatoe fritters sound the same as they'd be done over here,to use up leftover mash.My DH often makes them,as he always makes more of everything than we need:}

(Zone 5b)

Joy whip them up a batch of blood pudding.

(Zone 5b)

ok bangers & mash then *grin*
I'm adventurous what can I say

(Zone 5b)

how about a yummy haggis?

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Think I'll pass on the blood pudding :-)

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

haggis? Sounds German

(Zone 5b)

chicken

(Zone 5b)

Scottish

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Bring on the haggis lol. Be back in a bit.

(Zone 5b)

ok here's the recipe for haggis Flowers

1 sheep's lung (illegal in the U.S.; may be omitted if not available)
1 sheep's stomach
1 sheep heart
1 sheep liver
1/2 lb fresh suet (kidney leaf fat is preferred)
3/4 cup oatmeal (the ground type, NOT the Quaker Oats type!)
3 onions, finely chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
3/4 cup stock

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Ugggg think I spoke too soon, pass on haggie too Lynnie, thought you said it was chicken, that I can deal with lol Not too many sheep left here so don't think that will ever be on our menus thank goodness. Gone to watch GH be back in an hour.

Dronfield, United Kingdom

Flowers,I love coffee, never have de-caff,just ordinary, black coffee, made with water ,then add some hot milk,no suger.I do also drink tea and i have mine with milk.
I'm not a big meat eater, but i like chicken, turkey, fish ,cheese etc, there's lots of different cheeses made in UK,I love fruit and veg too.We eat a lot of potatoes at my house, baked, boiled roasted, mashed, rice, sometimes but not often, pasta, cereals for breakfast.....like cornflakes or bran with milk, porridge made with milk, served warm, popular in winter.
DH and my boys eat more meat than me though,so we do buy it.
I don't know apple butter,and have you told me what's a biscuit?,to me it's a cookie,and we like those too:}

Dronfield, United Kingdom

Lynnie,I've had roughly 2 mouthfulls of Haggis,it's disgusting,but I'm not a Scott so my oppinion doesn't count :}

(Zone 5b)

I'm not a Scott, either but my boss was and I tried hard to choke down a couple bites...then wash it down with tea, which I hate (I KNOW, I KNOW, all the women in my family drink tea except for me!) I don't like organ meats at ALL blech!
I like coffee, cream no sugar, or blonde & bitter as we say.

Flowers it was you I was calling chicken *grin* haggis is made and cooked inside the stomach of the sheep, I'm not mistaken. Looked like a giant blood pudding.

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

Eww on the haggis, Lynnie.

Yum on the grits. Here's an artery clogger: grits with cheese, crumbled bacon & a little syrup. I have a friend from SC who has 1001 things to do with leftover grits: plaster walls, etc..

Joy, a biscuit here is tough to explain. Kind of like a roll, but not really. Biscuits & gravy, yum. When I was preggers with DD we made sausage gravy. It must have been too rich, came back up. That was the last time I made sausage gravy. I would eat it in a heartbeat, but not very good for you. I eat enough stuff that's not good for me!

Blood pudding sounds disgusting.

(Zone 5b)

I get pancakes & sausage gravy once a month or so when I meet a friend for breakfast, with eggs over easy on it & hash browns yum

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

I don't think organ meat is good for you anyways. High in cholesterol. I feel that way about lentils also. Some Italian I am. It's the half of me that *not*, that doesn't like them. Lentils & macaroni, lentil soup, yech.

That's how I drink my coffee too, Lynnie.

(Zone 5b)

I don't like lentils either!

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

mmmm..... it does sound good... I could eat some type of breakfast for every meal. When we used to visit DH's grandparents in KY (where Marti lives actually) they were old farm folk and would have the big breakfast, huge dinner around 1:00pm and a snack later. I found I prefer to eat that way.

But the breakfast was to-die-for, all fresh farm stuff.

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes, they're gross.

Did you ever get a chance to listen to that Ray Davies concert with the chorus behind him? We just listened to it again, I asked DH to burn it for the car.

Dronfield, United Kingdom

Lynnie,i don't think flowers'll be tempted to try Haggis,you managed about as much as I did.I was in a hotel in Scotland,when I tried it:}
I'm going to say goodnight now, only 8.30,but i've a few things to do as havn't been home much today, worked morning and then at parents in afternoon.
I had chicken stew for dinner, nothing too offensive there at least Lol
I hope you all have a good evening, take care of yourselves
Joy

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

You too Joy. Have a good night. Say hello to the pony next time you see it!

Dronfield, United Kingdom

Just before I go,I also dislike lentils,as do DH and boys.I bet now someone will provide a really delicious recipe containing lentils:}
Smiley,thanks,i think I understand biscuit,like a bread roll,maybe,or perhaps toast?
Another organ meat,we don't call it that here it's called Offal, that I hate is.....liver,from anything!!!

Dronfield, United Kingdom

Smiley, goodnight, will probably see pony tomorrow afternoon,as am walking friends dogs with her,I'll pass on your hello.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Have a lovely evening Joy.

Hey Lynnie, Smiley and Flowers. We reached our high for today....44. usually that is our low for this time of year. Confession...I love liver, pan saute'd with onions over grits.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Hi there all you Gypsies! Lynnie has been checking on me every day and flowers also checked on me. Thank you for making sure that I am still here!

I had my doctor's apt. this afternoon. I had a respiratory infection, broncitis, sinus infection, and ear infection. I don't cough and blow my nose as much so I am better I guess but still sick. I still have a wheeze in my lungs, stuff from lungs is not completely clear, and my ear is still clogged. In general I feel achey and tired out. I took an antibiotic, still doing inhalers, have to take steroids another 10 days, and call the doctor if I am not better in a week. The pills are really bitter and have affected my sense of taste. Also, another side affect is that I have a mild tremor in my body. Being sick is not too cool!!!!

Hope all of you are well and doing ok. Haven't read your posts for quite a while. I will when I feel better. Take care of one another until then!

(Zone 5b)

Venice you actually sound just little bit better! You sound a lot less worn out than the last time you went for an appointment. maybe we should have a hot wheel convoy righ to your place, bring you some chicken soup and maybe a poultice from Moon or Jim *grin* you guys have a poultice for Venice don't you?
hey Dixie did you give Lester away yet? I need to make a big pot of soup for Venice!
