patti we are going to have to talk about how you think of what to purchase - that list of yours is great!!
What Have You Ordered 2010
Good luck with Molly. It's really pretty & I would get another if I thought it would work.
Another good list of plants Patti. I think your more moderate temps could work well for the peony. When you get all these new things up and growing your garden is going to be even more beautiful, if that is possible.
Seneca Hill perennials is in Oswego, NY, zone 5, and I saw molly growing there, so the strain she has might be hardier. And what I like is they are small peonies, and I think the small species ones adjust better to transplanting. The molly mommy was a very lovely yellow, so I'm crossing my fingers for you Patti, but she did say the babies were variable. And she says that on her website. Ellen's were growing right out in the open too, not in any sheltered area.
Well, we're not going to be a zone 7 this year. It got down to really (not wind chill) minus 7 last night. Dang. We haven't had a below zero year in about five years. of course the plants are under six foot of snow, so they are well insulated.
I wish we had the snow insulation here. It will be interesting to see what happens this spring.
During these Jan. cold snaps is the only time I like a bit of snow to blanket the garden. The six inches we have is quite sufficient thank you. At least our gardens are used to this, the poor gardens down south. I would be going nuts down there I think. I have been going over the orders and have to shake my head. Where are these all going to get stuck in. LOL Oh it does amaze me how big a garden bed can appear when covered with snow. Maybe more grass will have to disappear? A lot of them are going in the new bed extension I have already planned but still I think some of the other goodies may not fit in where I have imagined them. Isn't it always the way? Still have a few more things I would like to get too. LOL
I cant remember a colder Dec.and January.
Last year was bad enough and this year seems endless.
I hope this means we will have a great spring like we did last year.
Snow started melting in early March and we never got any more, just sun and cold until April and a gradual warming until the perennials bloomed.
Lets hope.
Was the 14th coldest Dec in the country in 115 years.
I agree. We are due for a warming into the 30"s for Wed. I just want to see the bare lawn even if it is brown.
Farmer's almanac was right again.
I haven't ordered anything, plant wise that is, plenty of after Christmas sales of other things, though.
I'm hopefully starting my veggie garden this year, I already have seeds for that.
It has been pretty normal around here so far this winter. I can remember much colder winters and I am hoping for a nice early spring like last year. I could do with a bit less rain and clouds in the late spring and early summer though. Rain at night and sunny days not so much to ask for right? Feb is usually the snowiest month here. We can get clobbered in early march too, but the sun is stronger and it does melt quickly then. Getting the soil defrosted is the trick, but the snow cover helps with hat too.

Nice combination of lilies. I hope the red devils aren't bad this year, then I can order more too. These are going to be very pretty. I specially like the 'White Silk', very elegant.
I love all of them and cant wait for her store to open again
If she opens it.......http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1065074/
Ngam, I like "White Silk" too, it prefers more shade so it doesn't burn....im hoping to plant "Romours" beside it.
You ordered them for now, Pix? How are you planning on holding them over?
Well Lisa and I emailed and decieded to cancel the order for now....to cold to ship. She may be going out of business so thats why I ordered them.....
I saw that. I'd like to get some from her too, if she is going out of business. i was just wondering how you were going to work it. Dang.
Nothing as yet. However, 'Roots & rhizomes' & 'McClure & Zimmerman' arrived today and I browzed through. R & R no longers carries dwarf aruncus. It may not have sold, love ours & it does keep increasing.
Was the 14th coldest Dec in the country in 115 years.
Ya see I was right. You are REALLY OLD!
Well I piced the clems, added to the GC order and put it all in one order. Only have the honeysuckle to order from Brushwood if it comes back in stock and I am done, well except for the local impulse buys. I hope we get an early spring, I have a lot of work to do before they start sending all this stuff. I can hardly wait.
Here is what is coming from GC:
echinacea FireBird
clematis Prince Charles
clematis Blue Angel
clematis Galore
echinacea Green Jewel
Vitis (grapes) Himrod
clethra Sugartina
stokesia Peachie's Pick
lupin Gallery Red
shasta Paladin
hydrandea Invincibelle Spirit
hosta Golden Tiara
hibiscus Peppermint Schnapps
I also received the R&R catalog along with a couple more today. I am not looking. I am done. This one will get paid for when it ships I believe and the others are paid when ordered so the $$$ is spread out over a few months. Works out pretty well for me since I can't get out too often to browse locally, probably a good thing for the budget.
Roots and Rhizomes has more negatives than positives on Garden Watchdog. i always love to see the pretty catalogue, but ouch.
There's a hosta I saw in that Roots and Rhizomes catalog I really want and checked the watchdog first and saw the negatives, I'm like "never mind"
I try to hide it, NuttyD! (Actually this is my third life in this cycle.)
only 3 Victor???
got my journal ready with this years seeds..

Didn't have any trouble with the dwarf aruncus from R & R, however I'm told that there is less trouble if you get your order in early before they start substituting.
We have lots of garden centers here. I do like GC though and ordered heavily from them and Bluestone last year and the year before.
This is the "leap" year for the first garden. I have notes to myself to remind me its full.
I have ordered seeds for plants that can be sown where the plants will grow. Nothing that germinates wit a lot of coolong and babying.
had a very short list of things i was interested in orderring this spring - researched all the sources yesterday - may order later this week.
pat did you look at silver star vinery before ordering those clematis? Debbie offer's that largest clem's i have seen at very reasonable prices - http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/4995/
i have a wish list at Silverstar. If my co-op ones dont appear, i'll order.
i would not wait for the coops - plants are too small - get a big one
having said all that a nursery that meredith clued me in on near here sells HUGE full grown clematis - i need to check pricing before any new orders - i thought they were like $30/plant verse the $15 or so from debbie - i would buy here for the instant gratification and spend a little extra and not wait 2 years for the growth.
Which one is that? Debbie's are pretty huge.
I'm with you on the bigger plant for more money.
I just dont have the patience to wait three years for plants to develop.
mixed borders - it is in hollis, nh - the pots are huge and the foliage is up to 4' tall - very large selection as well although not anywhere as big as debbie's - they have maybe 30 varities - and i might be wrong about price that is why i need to check
Height is deceiving. Debbie usually sends cut back plants. The root mass is huge. That's what counts.
i understand - the pots where very large and had roots coming out the bottom - easily twice the size of deb's roots
How does Brushwoods fare on your scale of clem growers?
Yes I have ordered clems from there before and they are really big. If I was only getting clems I would have got them there. I will grow these on in a larger pot planted deeper for a few months before I plant them 3-4 inches deeper again. The additional shipping, when I get charged and the distance of the nursery as well as already having an order played a part in getting them from GC this time.
Twice the size? That's hard to believe.
