Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

How long will the classified ad prices be in effect?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

This is going to be the day from hell.
My internet is so slow it took me 10 minutes(I timed it) to order 2 packs of seeds.

Onewish nice pic of caladiums. A perfect spot for them.

Oh I hope you get some speed shortly JoAnn. Those are really pretty. Are they for pots or the garden?

HCG and select seed catalogs came in the mail yesterday, not good, fun but not good for the budget. Soooo many pretty pics.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

This is for a container planting that includes LordVoldemort coleus.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Victor, I suspect awhile. Bill is good about that, but he does run out of cultivars, as he has such a following for this co-op/ classified.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Guess I should order soon then. Thanks.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i got a kick out this comment from celeste, "I've learned to not say im done until im actually out playing in the dirt again. Im making list too...lots of em."
based on what i saw last year she does not stop buying until late october and starts up again in january:)

i was not far behind her last year, this year will be much less i anticipate - although i also have been hit by every catalog known to man that are piled up in our sun room. other than veggy seeds i will be good.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I am done ordering until my bathroom is remodled.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I've heard that before!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Bill, I think you have me pegged. ^_^

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I don't have room for anything else : (
I should save lots of money

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Run over your neighbor!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Keep saying this===there is no need for grass.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Well if it were up to just me I could find a lot of room but unfortunately my husband likes a lawn.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What is it with men and lawns??? Rent 29th Street, if you have not seen it.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Nice selections, JoAnn. Can't wait to see how your pots turn out this summer. Victor is right, you're dangerous. I can be just as dangerous, but right now I don't have the money to leap into danger. Will have to wait. Maybe till sometime in Feb. or so. Actually, I have a lot of expenses coming up and am planning a trip to TX and NM at the end of March, so I may have very little money to spend on the gardens this spring. No matter......I will still get a ton of stuff done, in spite of the fact that I may not have many new things to add. Those Night and Day nasturtiums are pretty.

Caladiums are something I've never grown, and callas and cannas, too. I don't think I'll get started with them at this point. I have too many other things going on, and I don't want to get addicted to anymore plants. I'm addicted to enough already.

Victor, I have not seen 29th Street. What's it about?

You just expand the garden out into the lawn a few inches a year Deb. Be sneaky only when you must.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL! Yup, my friend Karen always does that. Since I have no husband or boyfriend to tell me not to put in new gardens, I don't have to worry about it.

My husband cheers me on when I make a new garden, as mowing is an all day job for him. But I do understand, kinda, the pull between men and their lawns.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I understand, too. Lawns look very nice. I love the look of all the grass pathways between my garden beds, but oh, how I hate the time it takes to keep them mowed every week. Takes me about 4 hours every week to mow the front and back yards and all the pathways. It's really a lot of work. Would be nice to have a man to take care of it for me. There are times when I wish I could just take out all the grass and be done with it, and no more mowing.

Nite!

I am planning some lawn scalping when DH is away for a day in the spring. He will like it once it is done. I know, because I am always out there reducing as much of that flat green stuff around the beds as often as I can. Dh always growls until it is done and then he smiles. The lawn mowing is the only part of Yard Work that we hire someone else to do and I do actually like some yard. I have just finished a Seneca order, some of it just for a spot that I am scalping ASAP. We have a little round bed with our well head in the middle covered up by a sundial. I have never liked it. I am going to connect the round bed to an existing narrow bed that runs down towards it. There are already some lone shrubs along the way that will now get swept up and become part of the new long narrow bed. Or course I don't have a photo of it as I have hated this area. I will have to leave some doggie paths through the middle of it. Can't wait. Patti

I love making mental changes to the garden contours duering this most boreing part of the winter.
I'm going to bring out the curve in the Lazagna Garden.
I have to keep a good lawnmower contoure so DD wont go nuts.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Yep , that's the ticket. Less grass to mow. Love your idea Patti. More pretties to show us. I have one in mind for the spring too that I have posted about. DH was not thrilled with the "sticking out part" but I bribed him with the idea that we would plant some table grapes. :)

A woman's gotta do-what a woman's gotta dooooo.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Grass should be the pathway - except for one decent sized area for play.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

debbi i agree with polly - when edging the beds take anough 6" out per year - i have been doing that in a ccuple area's for a while

joann this past fall i expanded a couple that made for tough turns with the lawnmover, so they are more the seeping curve i prefer.

will be placing my second jm order this afternoon, i have 4 more picked out just need to make sure they will be available - diana at topairy gardens sent me her listings for next year last night, very nice of her as they are not posted on her web site yet AND she extended her spring discount on the certificate my wife got me for x-mass - that means 1 or 2 more trees or conifers!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Bill - please compare David vs. Topiary for quality/price.

How many JM's are you shooting for?!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I guess spring cant be far
Victor and Bill are comparing JM notes.
Let the games begin.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hee hee! Can't come soon enough.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

What's a Seneca order, Patti?

Yes, that's the one thing my husband asks for Jo Ann, curves. LOL.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I already have expanded the back yard a few inches at a time as far as I can, there is just enough room for the lawn mower to turn around in right now. The front/side I would have to make new beds.
DH used to say it's easier to get forgiveness than permission until I started using it back on him.
I had pots all over the front patio and driveway thinking he would get frustrated enough with that to dig a new garden, but it didn't seem to bother him. I'll see what I can work on in the spring.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I'll give him some of mine,I have pleanty to go around since the holidays.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yes - it appears victor is letting me do the heavy lifting too:)

shooting for 3 or 4 from each and any left-over $ from certificates going to conifers

just got through the list TG sent and will need to re-shuffle which trees i get from who as TG appears to be out of a few i wanted to order - currently confirming that.

TG's are less expensive and not as tall - however this is misleading as she grafts her own and they have large calipers - the trees simply don't grow as fast here in the NE - i try to stay with dwarfs with TG although the Orange Dream i got last year is almost 4' tall and was $32, with a big caliper

Davidsans has begun grafting his own and that is the direction he will go down the road - however he has only been in business one year's now so he has to order from growers - he is picky about the growers he chooses and if the trees do not meet his standards (very high btw) he returns the trees - his trees are typically taller with a decent size caliper and reasonably priced.

Both do a GREAT job shipping with reasonable rates and both are adding hard to find conifers to their offerings. I can't say enough good things about each place. Diana at TG even sent out holiday greeting cards with a gardening theme which i thought was a nice touch. And she loves rocks in the garden too so just with that she get's my business:)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Debbilu Dont Dig a new garden, use the lazagna method ,start early so you can go thry sod when its time to put in perennials.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Oh I will JoAnn, much easier
thanks

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Bill, I'm familiar with Davidsans, but can you provide a link to the other JM retailer? Thanks!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Bill. Nice to see you getting the conifer bug. I got a Christmas card from Wildwood. Very nice.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Polly here is the link - http://www.topiary-gardens.com/ - the owner is Diana Smith - very nice lady.

Hey i didn't get a card from WW!

Far from just getting the conifer bug have over 30 different varities with many dup's - with all the jm's now they need conifer couplings:)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You haven't bought enough yet! I bought many trees over a five year period.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

FW should send me a gift! Spent thousands with them over the years.
