Hate to be the bearer of bad news....

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

Boy oh boy, I hope they're wrong, Jill! So sorry Jim is stuck, but still, better to be safe than endangering life and limb. Are your parents still with you?

Hope everyone will be warm, cozy, well-stocked and have power!

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

All stocked up, from food to hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps ^_^ DH took tomorrow off, so that will be nice, I do hope the power stays on, I have work to do over the weekend - Jill, there are worse places than F'furt to be stuck ^_^ LOL All of a sudden I got cravings for Schnitzels! We did our Friday nite date tonite instead, traffic was just as bad as during Christmas - unbelievable! Honking horns, near accidents - crazy! Dropped by the grocery store on the way home, the shelves were stripped bare! Talked to one of the cashiers, told me it had been a mad house all day - I know we are in for a storm, but...the panic is borderline ridiculous...anyway, going to snuggle under the blanket & watch a movie - y'all stay safe and warm! Beck

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL, I just need some Eggs!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Went to the store today not even out of necessity I just forgot some stuff last time I went and if the storm isn't that bad we have a Superbowl party to go to sooo needed some goodies.(wow is that the longest run on sentence or what???)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

When I went to the grocery store, it was as if the world was ending! I'm in now... let it snow, let it snow, let it @*$%-in' snow!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My folks are back in Pittsburgh, where they're expecting a "mere" 6 inches or so of white stuff.

One friend called me today with a heads-up from a friend at NOA, and when I mentioned the possibility of getting 48 inches to a neighbor she said she'd heard the same from a friend on the Army base... not sure why it wasn't on the news that way, maybe they were afraid of unreasoning panic. Bet Walmart was out of TP, bread, and milk by noon.

No word from Jim tonight, but I'm pretty sure he's still in the air (Almaty, Kazakhstan to Frankfurt, Germany).

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

NO TP???????? LOL

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Even quiet little Lexington was BUSY yesterday with everyone racing around to stock up in case we get dumped! Latest predictions are up to 10" so not much worse than last weekend's storm but I'm not sure "they" know what it's going to do! Been watching the radar and we're right on the tip of everything so expect by 7:00 AM we'll be seeing some of the white stuff :( Figured I'd be able to slip out quick this morning to pick up anything we might need but I think we're pretty well set and I'm just going to hunker down and hope the power stays on!

Critter, hope Jim gets home safely :) My daughter and son-in-law have been in Mexico for the week and flying home tomorrow. Thankfully their layover is in Atlanta so they'll only see rain and then fly over the big storm before arriving home safely late tomorrow night.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I'll say it again...GRRR!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Flights were canceled today... Jim is rescheduled for tomorrow but probably won't be home until Sunday (don't think flight will run tomorrow, they just haven't canceled it yet). Phooey.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Nothing here yet, The schools sent out a bulletin last night that they were closing early today. Now I understand that working parents need to make arrangements "if" the schools close early but really can't they just wait and see "when" the snow starts before they start closing them. JR's school is closing at 1:00 and there isn't even one flake of snow yet. Holly

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I am all hunkered in for today and tomorrow...
Have to work Sunday--bummer! I KNOW I will try to dig out to get to work--not one to call out...
Of course--if it is ridiculous--I will have to.

Plan to take cuttings today from my Coleus cuttings that have grown to a foot tall.
Have to re-pot my big Beefsteak Begonia in fresh soil- Just gonna take the old clusters and cut them back and discard the ropy-snaky old roots. And--pot up all kinds of other things that have rooted in water on my windowsills.
Starting fresh.
Hmmmmmmm---Maybe start a pot of meat stock tomorrow???? Hmmm....Maybe--too much planning going on here.....:o)..as usual--the mind is willing, but........

Oh Jill, I'm so sorry. I've been in similar situations and it's no fun at all. TRY to focus on the fact that Jim will get home eventually, and he won't be in danger doing so. Not easy, when you're housebound alone with a little one, I know! {{{Hugs}}} to you both, and I'm really glad you're feeling better!

It began snowing lightly here right about 10 AM, and has been increasing in strength, but the temp outside is still above freezing (35), so not too much is sticking ... yet. What has me a little concerned about the strength of this storm is the lack of activity on the birds' part around my yard. Since yesterday afternoon, I've hardly seen any! It's almost as if they know something, (falling barometer?) and are taking cover too.

Here's a link to the NOAA weather satellite loop: http://www.weather.gov/sat_loop.php?image=ir&hours=24

This storm is so huge it should have a name...

Another link with lots of local (DC Metro, at least) information is the Capital Weather Gang, featured in the Washington Post. I find them very helpful and informative without getting into hysterics. I was also surprised to see that one of the founders of the group went to elementary school with our son! Kinda cool...........Barb

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Started snowing here now, it's 32°F so it should start sticking - just heard from Chantell and she's on her way home - DH took today off so he's safe and sound - my MILS was supposed to come for the weekend, but she called the airlines and got a full refund, every flight on the east coast has been canceled - she would have made it to Atlanta and no further - Jill, like I said, I'm sorry Jim is stuck, but at least he's in F'furt and not in one of the "Stans" ^_^

I'll be working, cooking up a big pot of Pasta Fagioli - finish some knitting and messing around on FB ^_^ Beck

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Bec, I hope that soup shows up on our winter recipe thread. It's one of my favorites.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

The snow has just started here. We have gotten all the shopping done... and are now hunkered down as well. Hubby went out and did some last minute shopping this morning and said the traffic was horrible and the stores were in full blown panic!

I am supposed to work tomorrow and Sunday, but had already told them I doubted I would make it in on Saturday. 30 mile commute and only one vehicle in the family??? Naawww... don't think so! I will try to make it in on Sunday... maybe...

I'm making soup today as well... chicken and wild rice.

Let the fun begin!

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

I think there will be a lot of soup in the MA this weekend.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

They have labelled it an "epic" storm

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Well, we're still waiting for the 'epic' part...there is barely anything coming down now, not sticking and just wet...DH is peeved he took the day off now...but, I'm still glad he's home ^_^

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Don't worry... it's comin'!

Richmond is getting it at about 2 inches an hour now.

Newfield, NY

ny is good to get nothing.so sad

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Aw Holly--its much ado about something this time-- when so surely predicted we gotta get those kids home so we parents can do our last minute shopping LOL Snowing strong here now, birds have been stuffing themselves for hours. There is a huge flock of robins in our trees--so funny. Spring is coming!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL Sally, It never did start here until after 3:30 when the kids would have been leaving even now there is barely a dusting on the roads but it is coming fast and steady. One of the school districts didn't do and early dismissal and their kids were heading home before the first flake fell. Sure is looking pretty out there right now. Holly

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

it's pretty here, too... fat fluffy flakes falling fast, layering on top of all the branches and outlining everything in fuzzy white.

I'm enjoying the view, but I'm still a little grumbly 'cause I can't be snowed in with Jim... we like being holed up at home together! Joyanna and I are doing just fine, though. :-)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I was just talking about you. I know just what you mean about missing out on all that uninterrupted alone time. Just beat Ric at 2 games of cribbage and 1 game of Phase10. Feeling pretty full of myself right now but I know it will turn around to his advantage soon. LOL

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

It started about 5:30 here. I went to the grocery store, drug store and bank. Despite what I heard on the news, it wasn't crowded and they weren't sold out of anything. Although another customer told me he tried to go to Walmart and it was a mob scene. I will say, I never saw CVS have 5 pharmacists on duty before. They had a hugh line at the drive through, but no one was in the store.

It is not yet sticking on the concrete and asphalt, but the grass and trees are covered. I did fill the bird feeders. It sounds like South Jersey and Delaware are going to get it bad. The Chadds Ford/Kennett area will be hit hard too. It was snowing there around 2:30. It's wierd, that's only 35 or 40 minutes from here.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

OK, Are you guys going to organize a cribbage tournament on the Spring/Fling weekend???

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

About 4 inches so far...

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Why not, Sally plays, and I'm sure there are others. Ric
Holly squeaked by on both games, having 1st count on the last hand. LOL

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL LOL Where are those little smiley guys????

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Coming down slowly--but steady here in White Marsh/Perry Hall.
The first hour or so of the snow just melted as it landed. Then it started sticking.....At this time--9PM--I am estimating about 3"-4" have fallen that I can see.

Someone called from my HD with an emergency phone # to call if one is scheduled to work at any time this weekend. I do not know if this is a local--or an overall number--but if you plan to go shopping at a HD--you may want to cal ahead and see if they are closed.

The number i was given is: 1-877-694-3411.
I hope it is a general HD # to call to see if they are open in any area.

Since i do not work tomorrow anyway--I will be cooking Split Pea Soup. Been hankering to do this one for a long time....
Chopping and dicing tonight--carrots and celery and onions. Frozen ham bone and smoked Ham-hocks are sitting out for the night and thawing. Gonna have a relaxed, snowed in day tomorrow!

Gita

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Started lightly snowing here about 15 mins ago

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL, Gita, MA is having a soupathon weekend. Head on over to the recipe thread.

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

Here are some snow photos - it's still "pouring" out there!!!

This one was taken out back, looking west, at about 5:10 PM. It had been snowing lightly, but steadily all day since about 10 AM.

Never fear folks--Alfonzo Gore is at this very minute riding to you rescue

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

It got dark fairly early tonight, but the flash captures the intensity of the snowfall. This was taken looking in essentially the same direction, at about 7:40 PM...

And finally, for now, here's one taken looking almost due North, still out back (with covered patio furniture in foreground), at about 10:15. At the rate it's coming down, assuming it continues as predicted, we'll be lucky to be able to open the doors in the morning!

Crossing fingers that the power stays on..............Barb

LOL Vortreker!

Barb, the beauty of your photos never ceases to astound me. I didn't realize that your snow started that early. How much do you think you have right now?

I just checked and we are somewhere between 3 & 4 inches.

Good one, Vortreker I;ll leave a light on for him
"Official " measurement here- 8 inches right now and coming down steady

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

Gosh, thanks, stormy. This has been a very scenic winter - so far!

I did a very unscientific measurement out front (on formerly bare porch) with the yardstick at about 10 PM, and it was about 8". I suspect "scientifically", it might have been a little bit more, since it's so wet that it's compacted a bit. But still, if it keeps coming down like it's been coming down, it's gonna be a lot of snow, no matter how it's measured! Hmmm... maybe the technical term "a boatload" would be appropriate??? ^_^ Barb
