Countdown to spring! One garden photo per day - Part 3

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I think my admiration for DLs came from my problem with bulbous lilies. I have the dreaded Lily beetles here and they really make it much harder to have beautiful Lilies. They don't bother Dls though and the flowers are available in so many colors that you are sure to find a color for your garden. Bulbous lilies bloom time is also short so they make a nice substitution.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I hear ya about those red devils. I have moved all my lilies to one or two areas just because of the constant care they need now. I used to have them throughout the garden like the DLs are now.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

We haven't been cursed with the lily beetle yet, thank heavens. I love the bulbous lilies.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

LBs are evil.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Well, don't send them here, then, although if they have them in Canada, and Mass, I don't know how we missed them.

What do you do to take care of them, Patti?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Great combo, Pat!

Like that azalea color, Allison.

Love redbuds, Lynn.

Nice, Jo.

Love the birdie!

Tiarella Sugar and Spice from May. Reminds me of a bday cake.

Pick the adults off every day. If I miss any I use soapy water to spray off the disgusting babies. Yuck. For a large infestation I hear people have had luck with neem oil spray. If you check every day, a couple times a day, you can keep them under control pretty well. They will defoliate a lily in short order if left unattended and the lily will die because the bulb will not be replenished for the following year. They over winter in the ground and fly in from other yards.

(Zone 5b)

I love these shade flowers, I wish had a LITTLE shade!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Oh how pretty . Sugar and spice and everything nice, just like Victor. Ha!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Wonderful Tiarella patch Victor, I have about 8 of those too, they seem flimsy but are surprisingly tough plants! Nice shot!

Nice color and shot, WC! Yes, tiarella is cool. I like when the flower shoots first start.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

great combo is right - very nice patti

lynnie what variety redbud is that? don't think i've seen one that covered - it looks great!

here is a view down the driveway from the front door (please ignore the "not quite" dead forest pansy redbud which has since been moved)

Gee, I wonder why birthdays are on your mind, Victor.

WC - love that orange! It really perks up a garden.

Beautiful setting, Bill. It's so nice to have the big view as you do. Love the stone wall as well.

Here's Azalea Hilda Niblett.

(Zone 5b)

I think it might be an Oklahoma redbud, the leaves are so big and glossy in the summer kids will reach out and touch them, it's funny to watch them. I'd love to take credit for all those blooms, but I just planted the tree & watered it lol

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

WC that is a very nice broom. Do you know the name? I donot think I ever saw an orange one.
Bill you must stop and stare for a minute or two every time you walk out your front door. Just lovely.
What a nice soft color on that azalea Pirl. It would blend really well with a lot of spring colors.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks!
- Beautiful azalea pirl! what are the accompanying little white flowered plants in the background??
- ngam I'll get you the name as soon as the snow melts enough for me to see the 8" tall ID tag! Bought it at HD in the spring, saw a lady with 5 in her cart and figured it must be something good so I got one, (the last one left!) was about 2½ feet tall when I got it, 2yrs later it's 5 x3 ft and this spring should reach 6 feet tall x 4ft wide.

It's lavender just coming into bloom, WC.

In front of Hilda is a sedum with an edge that matches Hilda to perfection.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks pirl! Beautiful combo, you have great taste!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, WC. That's a lovely compliment!

If you ever drive out this way please let us know. I'd love to show you our gardens.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - great combo, Pirl! I love sedum sieboldii.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Victor. I love the low sedums but not the invaders like Golden Carpet. Others have told me it's not invasive for them so maybe it's our soil that it loves but it's just not welcome here.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Will do pirl! ☺

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I've used sieboldii in hanging baskets along with annuals that echo that edge color.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Great, WC!

Victor - good idea. It would look good with the nice pink begonias I keep from year to year from Dutch Gardens. Sieboldii lends itself to the pink family quite well.

There are so many temptations on this thread. I love that!
JoAnn those lilies look really nice I think I will have to get at least a couple new ones this year.
Onewish that red azalea looks like my new one from last spring. I hope it returns, the color is so nice.
Polly another lovely pic of a very pretty iris.
Here is a TBI 'Hello Darkness'. It is really too tall and the flowers are so large it needed stalking last spring. The slugs also got a few before I realized that was the problem.

One of my favs. I SO cannot remember all the names of my tulips in my head but will look it up when I get home if someone wants.

As the winds continue to howl and the snow swirls (but the driveway remains clear due to the winds) I sit here, look at all the great photos and dream of spring and summer.

Ge thats a nice selection of lilies you picked.
Love the red Allison, bet the Hummers do too.
Polly I really like the colors of smash.
Lovely Pirl!
And D-nut, I do think I may need the name of that tulip, it's stunning!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Jo Ann, Lynnie and Celeste!

Long ago, probably in '88, I picked up a magazine with a stunning photo on the cover and knew I'd love to have that garden as my own. Through tons of mulch, we brought home from the dump by ourselves, many years of hard work, major work on the thirteen 50' tall spruces, inspiration from Alan Bloom's book, "Perennials for your Garden", and an additional irrigation zone, along with Jack's endless help, I do have my dream garden.

It's so nice to read all the wonderful comments from people who have visited our gardens during the two garden tours - especially on these windy/snowy winter days.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

That tulip and those dark iris are gorgeous. I am so ready for spring and its just Jan. And then there is the pic from Pirl. Oh my Pirl, that is what all the work is all about. What a lovely scene. How many days are left 'till spring?
