Countdown to spring! One garden photo per day - Part 2

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Welcome, Terri. Love the photo of your grandmother as well as the peonies and the statue.

Terrific tulip, Patti!

Allison - yellow is my favorite spring color. It's such a welcome sight.

Back to March for some crocuses.

One thing that I've noticed in the posts here is the quality of the photos - they are incredible. The shots with the central flower(s) so crisp and clear and background kind of muted are so pretty.

This is off topic, but are most of you also photography enthusiasts? I just have a simple Sony point and shoot digital camera, and do just that - point and shoot... I'd love to start learning more about garden photography. Is there already a thread you can point me to about the types of cameras/lens and techniques you guys use to get those incredible closeups? Terri

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I just use a NIKON CoolPix 2000.
and trust the "auto" setting.
Victor and WHA do the camera thing.
Check "Communities" forums to see about photoing gardens.I never thought of that but its an idea.
Maybe your community has workshops in photographing flowers.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thx for the complement Joann - i use a Canon point and shoot as well and usually keep on auto mode too - i just "try" to think of the composition and background. Victor is the real photographer here. Of course there are many others that do a great job as well.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I use a wave and shoot cuz I have not learned to use my new camera yet which I WILL do soon. Weinerbrain me should have brought the new one with me as Penny (roybird) in Sante Fe could have shown me how to use it :(

Hey people--we still use film.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Oh my goodness. Miss a day or two and there is a lot to catch up on. Beautiful pics all. Tulips of every color, daffs, hyacinths, branches looking like wonderful berry decorated trees, birdies of every color, crocus, lily of the nile. All terrific.
This is a DL that has a name similar to what a chubby guy's description might include, 'Cherry Cheeks'. Ho Ho Ho!

Good morning all. Thanks, Bill. Don't leave out WC! He's a great photographer and fellow crazy. Terri, I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have. There is a Photos forum and a Camera forum. Camera is the one to ask equipment questions, though it is not very active. But again, I'd be happy to answer any questions - you can dmail me anytime.

I use both a Sony H1 p&s and, now, more often, a Nikon D300S dslr. I have a number of lenses.

Great blue, NuttyD. Love the apple, WC.

Here's a weeping katsura from April.

Dont leave out Boojum too! She takes some awesome pics!
... wait a minute, why did that guy leave me out?! (lol!)

- Anyway there's a lot of the best photographers here in the Northeast Section, you don’t have to take super pictures in order to enjoy what’s here to offer, but I’ve you’d like to learn more about taking pictures there’s a photography section in DG where professional as amateur photographers ask questions and get answers. There’s a lot of topics covered and you can ask a question by starting a new topic.

* The effect you are referring to, (the sharp central image and blurred surrounding is easier to achieve in a camera with interchangeable lenses, rather than a point and shoot although it can be accomplished. I use a Nikon DSLR, it allows for interchangeable lenses. ☺

(...and yes Victor is very good, and crazy too! lol!!)

- Beautiful shot Victor!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, WC.

There are many good photographers on this forum. Did not mean to leave anyone out!

Terri - on point and shoots, if you have a Macro setting, you can get that effect. In that setting, the camera automatically adjusts the size of the lens opening to give you that.

Don't forget our Allison who also has a pic in the DG calendar along with Victor and others here. I got my calendar and it is lovely!

I used to use a Sony Mavica with floppy disc drive. It was so easy to upload pics. Now I am using a Lumix with Leica lens which has more features and sharper pics. All I wanted was something that could withstand garden dirt:-)

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

We have tons of great photographers on here, Victor, Boojum, Allison, WC, Pixie, and others. Unfortunately I'm not one of them, but learning.

Here's an April shot of my Japanese maple babies with their new leaves on. These are the ones I got from Highland Park (with permission).

Polly how wonderful is that? Do you grow JM's from seed?

Love estella and the Reddy set.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Oooo, pretty tulip. Love those irises, Lucy.

Joyce, I have never tried them from seed. I went to Highland Park in Rochester, and they have a JM collection. A groundsperson was pulling seedlings to toss, and I asked if I could take some.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Wow! That's great! Nice collection!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Thank you. And free is good.

Merry CHRISTmas everyone,

sorry I'm bad about hitting that send button before adding the names, this sedum is a must for the garden.

Larinem Park Sedum

I'm so loving everyone's contributions here. Incredible folks.

Nice park picture Polly

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, I agree, it looks like a beautiful park!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

It is a beautiful park, right Jo Ann?

A ton of walking, up hill and down. The park is 155 acres, has 500 cultivars of lilacs, 1200 lilacs altogether. 35 cultivars of magnolias, 700 cultivars of azaleas, rhodies, and mountain laurel.

The park occupies most of a glacial moraine, for those interested in geology.

When I was a child I went there daily with my aunt. Now we go three or four times a year.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Frederick Law Olmstead ( Central Park NYC)designed a couple of parks here,I think Highland is one of them.
This is a really nice area, so glad they voted down a cassino in the middle of town.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

think this one is greenland or something like that
