Flowers, be safe and careful if ya have to go out today.Have a great day

We have the proverbial pea soup fog...visibility is seriously limited...less than 1/4 mile...that would be less than 1/2 KM for Joy (I think...KM is .64 US mile???) Rains are supposed to start up again tonight through Wednesday. We have already gotten just over 8 inches (1/4 meter approx.) during December with over half the month yet to go....

Oh, I just love Wisconsin winters......
This is what we have now, and no it's not snow on the cars!

I was outside shoveling some of the walk during the night, so I was just a little surprised when I was in a clients room and it said on the radio that there was going to be a 2 hour delay for the schools.............

And no JJ, I don't drive over that bridge now, I walk to work now. So now I get to walk on this...........LOL

Hi everyone!

Kassy, I remember all the snow and ice. My fingers would hurt before I would get all the ice and snow off my car then.

If you can believe, it is 50 degrees here now!!!!

Kassy, what size of shoe do you wear?

JJ, you sure must be busy the past few days because we haven't seen you much.

My very pretty hibiscus flower finally opened just a few minutes ago. The double trumpet part of the blossom hadn't opened yet this morning. But the sun is out now and sure enough it opened all the way. I have such few flowers that it a major even when something like that happens. It has been loosing more leaves. It probably has half as many as it orginally had.

I am wondering when is the time to trim the 3 branches so it will create new branches.

Later!

Hi Venice!

I've only a few minutes left here, took an early lunch because I have an online training session from noon - 1:00pm.

Glad to hear about your hibiscus, it must be beautiful.

Catch you all later!

Lynnie, why *were* you "humphing" ??

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, I have a problem!

Lynnie, sent me 4 pretty small tubers of sweet potato vines, 2 white and 2 pinkish. I have had them quite a while. They were wrapped in newspaper and I unwrapped them today.

One is totally shiveled up! The others are hard and dry on the ends. I put the real bad one in water. I was hoping to give a couple to Riley. Are these any good at all??? Is there anything I can do to help them?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, I found this great site on hibiscus. It has everything I ever wanted to know about hibiscus!

http://hibiscus-sinensis.com/care.html

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

That's good, Venice. My meeting ended earlier than they thought, I tried googling rhizome, reviving, a few different things, didn't have any luck for you.

I should check mine.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Hi Venice. I do not think the shriveled one will survive. The others you can probably pot up and water lightly. If they get too dry, they will shrivel because they are feeding on themselves. You may have to forego sending any to Riley this time, but we may be able to come up with some to send her at Easter.

Here is a pretty good link on pruning a tropical Hibiscus. If you use this as a guide, your hib should do just great. Oh, don't worry about the leaf loss. Pretty natural when the days are shorter. Just water enough to keep the soil from drying out completely and do not feed it til spring.

Glad you found what you needed Venice.

Hi Smiley...glad you got out early. Still raining here, just started rumbling out there again...sigh

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Okay, the creek is up a foot or so since this morning and a Flash flood warning is in effect for us til 3PM...not a big deal here, but the thunder and lightning are getting wicked and the power is flickering again....see you all later....grin the Electricity Chicken, bruck, bruck....is turning stuff off again...Bye

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, with all that lightning maybe you should turn off and unplug all your electrical things. I once had my phone, computer, and TV go out for quite a while because of lightning.

Lynnie, did I give you a site that had info on how to root a tuber is water? I can't find that site now, wouldn't you know!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Does anyone know where I can get some wheat grass seed?

Petco has a 4" pot of it growing for cats to eat, $4.99! I thought I could grow my own. Or is there any other type of seed I could grow for Kitty?

Keaau, HI

Good morning everybody! Aloha aku!

Hibiscus is one of my favorite subjects! Many of the Rosa-sinensis hybrids have Hawaiian genes in them.
Below is Hibiscus waimeae subsp. waimeae, Koki'o Ke'oke'o, from the Island of Kaua'i. It is the most fragrant of Hawaiian Hibiscus.

For indoor Hibiscus, they need to stay warm and well lighted. Water sparingly in the winter, it should e in well drained soil. Make sure the water is at least room temperature (don't give it cold tap water). Fertilize it monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer such as Miracle-Grow.
You can trim it any time; right after you fertilize is a good time.

Look for Wheatgrass seed at your local health food store.

Ok, here is my hibiscus blossom. I wish I had a camera that took close-ups.

About the wheatgrass: I have checked at health food stores, Tractor Supply, the county co-op.

Wheatgrass is grown from "Wheat Berries", freshly dried whole grain Wheat.

Oatgrass is also good for cats; it is often referred to as "Catgrass".

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I found some online.

I think this photo is a little better.

Sorry, forgot the photo!!

The State Flower of Hawai'i is Hibiscus brackenridgei, Ma'o Hau Hele.

Hey Carol, your Hibiscus looks like it might be a cross between Hibiscus rosa-sinensis & Hibiscus saintjohnianus.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Dave, I had ID'd it as possibly 2 different flowers.

Variegated Tropical Hibiscus Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'El Capitolio' -- OR
Tropical Hibiscus 'El Capitolio sport' Hibiscus rosa-sinensis

I looked at the photos for Hibiscus saintjohnianus. I don't think it is that one because mine has the lower petals then an extension to the pompom of flowers at the end. I am not very good at describing flowers.

How is your building coming along?
By the way, how does your garden grow?
Do you have any plants inside?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Maybe this photo shows that extension to the pompom part better.

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

What a pretty little plant, Venice. Looks very healthy and well-cared for.

As long as Dave's here, and hibiscus is one of his favorite subjects, mind if I butt in and ask a question?

Our hibiscus hasn't bloomed since we inherited it from my uncle. It did bloom for him. Is there any reason, besides lighting, why it won't bloom? In the summer it is in our sunroom, which faces south, so I assume it gets enough light there.

That's all, thanks in advance, Dave.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

When I saw the first bud on my Hibiscus, I gave it Miracle-Gro Bloom Booster. It has less nitrogen in it than the regular Miracle-Gro. Low nitrogen fertilizer is suppose to be good for a Hibiscus. This is the second bloom I have had on this little plant that I got maybe a couple of months ago for $1.00! Oh yes, I remember reading that it takes normal watering but don't over water and don't let it totally dry out. I stick my finger in the soil of my pots to see if it feel damp. Always before, I just watered plants when I thought about it or when I saw one droop. However, now with more plants, it seems like I have to watch them individually because some drink a lot and some don't
