Hibiscus is one of my favorite subjects! Many of the Rosa-sinensis hybrids have Hawaiian genes in them.
Below is Hibiscus waimeae subsp. waimeae, Koki'o Ke'oke'o, from the Island of Kaua'i. It is the most fragrant of Hawaiian Hibiscus.

For indoor Hibiscus, they need to stay warm and well lighted. Water sparingly in the winter, it should e in well drained soil. Make sure the water is at least room temperature (don't give it cold tap water). Fertilize it monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer such as Miracle-Grow.
You can trim it any time; right after you fertilize is a good time.
