Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

pretty sure just looked them up in a catalog that was at my feet - think the empty package is somewhere here for me to register it in my garden journal - i have been wrong before though

Jadajoy,

Sorry I don't come out to the garage where my computer is until late morning. As Louise said Pam Harper gardens in coastal Virginia, but her books are really applicable to most areas. Her books are some of the best for gardening advice as far as I'm concerned.

Here's one of her books I would really recommend. I don't buy any of my books new, so....

As far as buying lilacs, my favorite place is Syringa Plus. The owner Roger was one of the head gardeners at The Arnold Arboretum, and he knows his lilacs.

And for largest selection here:

You are in about the southernmost zone for lilacs, but you can still get any of the vulgaris ones for your area. For a lilac that will handle the heat try any one of the hyacinthiflora ones, and Lilac Sunday is an especially nice one that blooms into Florida.

Don't think this is all Greek. You'll see when you look at the websites.

Nope.

Bill, definitely hyacinthoides, or whatever they might be calling it these days :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Bill calls it muscari. ^_^

LOL. Well, at least Bill says he might be wrong. I know some men that would never admit that one.

Lovely Polly!

Great thoughtful gift ideas Victor! You really have the Christmas Spirit! I love all the garden pics! I usually keep a pot of lavender on the window sill in winter, just so I can sniff it. I didn't get to it this year and I really miss it! So I'n jealous of your salvia Jada! Who is shipping live garden plants this time of year? You can use any od the spring bulbs to plant a layered pot--the later blooming bulbs are planted in the bottom of the pot, and layer up with the subsequent blooming bulbs, with the early bloomers on top. Just have to remember that most need chilling for a few weeks in order to bloom.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

all three of you guys are "probably" correct after going to plant files - muscari is what i did plant this year

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks. There's an example of what I'm talking about, though Victor. There should be no purple on that flower.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Pixie--that NE seed link you posted is 20 miles away from me--I sent for their catalog as Captain Kirk wants to start seed for his "garden"

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I know - it can be frustrating, Polly.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Very. I want my website to be as true to reality as possible. I know a lot of websites are not, and I know they are very frustrating. A person wants the iris they see on a webite to be the iris they see in their garden. or any plant for that matter. But with a new camera in the spring, hopefully it will be better. I was not going to photoshop at first, but if I can get the true colors, then I have decided I will.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Victor, those sound like wonderful gifts! Would we see the effects if you posted pics? Would love to see them.

Thanks GE. Going to amazon to look up her books.i should get good ideas since she is right here in Virginia.

wha, whatever you call those, that pic is stunning!

Polly--Thanks! Have you got me started on another obsession:-)

PV- I got them from Annie's Annuals .com. They are in California so still summer for them. They arrived in great condition. 3" pots but very healthy. That pic was from their website. Hope mine get that big, but it still smells divine for a little plant. Wish I had gotten more. Going to pot up some tulips :-)

Thanks, I should have had it more in the zone of focus, but I couldn't move back any further without stepping on some tulips! lol!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think it's perfect with the out of focus one in the back.
