'People who do good are not overly involved in the shortcomings of others'. So judges must not be good people. Nor prosecutors, police, lawmakers....
Coffee Break #25 - First snow of the year
What constitutes 'judging', Joyce???? Was Elie Wiesel advocating therapy for the Nazis who were caught? There is a 90 yr old one on trial right now. Big difference between seeing everything in black and white vs. seeing NOTHING in b & w. And fear of being too judgmental resulted in a lot of innocent people dying in Fort Hood.

Dave - you have had some harsh words for a number of people in the past. You referred to the celebrity 'bimbos' who get too much attention. That was pretty judgmental, don't you think? Also had some judgmental words about the adulterous SC governor.

ok into neutral corners and don't come out until i ring the bell
Can't say I 'm a liberal but actually I am. I have to pay $2000.00 once a month to keep my eyesight through injections, insurance pays 25% though I have a good one. What is fair about that?
Can't say I am a conservative but I am when it comes to evil man kind commits, (such as Victor mentioned).
Victor, my point is that I don't believe ANYTHING is strictly black or white. If that were so, we wouldnt need a judicial sysytem that is set up to hear both sides, we wouldnt need religion to guide us, and we wouldnt need forums to discuss our differing opinions.
Yes, some crimes are more heinious than others and seem open and shut cases and people are entitled to their opinions about it depending on what they believe. But if my beliefs are different from yours does that make me wrong?
Who decides?
This is wonderful! I love this kind of philosophical debate! Yipee!! ☺
Don't recall saying you were wrong, Joyce. Please point me to where I did. Don't believe anything is black or white? Really? And you're reinforcing my point about the judicial process - they JUDGE!
Would really like to see any evidence of our society being more judgmental and 'puritan' these days. I am shocked that anyone believes that. Look at what our kids are exposed to. Look at what is allowed on tv and in the movies. Society is way more permissive today.
Much TOO permissive IMO! Now they want to change the institution of marriage as well! A total degradation of society's morals & ethics. Wish we could bring back censorship the way it was 'back when', but it would never hold up in today's courtrooms with all the legal presidents that have been set...
I have always believed, no matter how hard we try, fail, don't try, whatever our laws say, our religion preaches, whether we see society as too judgemental or too tolerant, we are a very immature species. If evolution takes us to a more mature place, then good. Until then, we will continue to find loopholes around laws, moral rules and so on.
Wake me up when we get there.
Oh yeah, by the way, we're crossing or at least dangerously close to crossing the 'acceptable use policy' here at DG. Can we please stop talking politics?!
I think this discussions are great on this thread, independent thoughts that is what matters in this country. I grew up in one where that was not possible.
but admin is really going to shut this down, me thinks....
I agree. We have new thread now.
No Victor. You didnt say I was wrong. I was'nt implying you or me but people in general.
We pay judges so we can bring matters before them and let them decide because we all have opinions and beliefs. When we read something like the tiger case, I think it is wrong to automatically assume anything and judge people because lots of times the media puts a slant on things and they do get it wrong sometimes.
Case in point: A man here in virginia is locked up because he was in a walmart and supposedly was trying to abduct somebodies child. The mother caught him leading her son away and raised holy h#$%^. My first respose: Castrate those child kidnappers!!!
Now it turns out this man is mentally challenged, was in the store with his own mother, loves children and thought the little boy was lost and was taking him to the desk to help find his mother.
See how that works? I just judged someone, based on a media story that didnt have all the facts. Its just a dangerous practice. Something I am also guilty of.
Yes. Political talk and independent thoughts are precious. I'm grateful for that here in this country. However, so is a little piece of bliss away from it on occasion that one can visit at will. That is what I consider DG to be for me (and I know many others).
Sorry, I'm a slow poster. Didnt see all the posts before mine. Need to start hitting preview before I post.
No problem, Joyce. Peace!
Peace! Yaaaay!
Always Victor! ( I enjoy debating with you:-)
Piece!!! (For Tiger - hee hee. ^_^)
LOL! I'm gonna let you have that one :-)
He wishes his wife would say that!
She may have already said it.
Jigsaw puzzle!
I did really enjoyed the above discussions, whether agreeing or not, all was said with knowledge and intelligence and quite a bit of humor thrown in. Too bad we all can't sit at a round table and just have fun talking about lots of things we can't here. I know I wanted to describe many experiences I witnessed, to me it is history that happened 60 years ago most Americans do not know about.
Awwww, Maria. You should be able to talk about your experiences. I didn't mean to put a stop to that.
It's OK Sof,
Geeze! I go off to work and leave you kids alone for a few measly hours and look what happens! Just wait til your father gets home! (Dave?) Heee-hee!
Funny phoebe! So Dave is our dad now? I think he's younger than most of us here.
Victor,
Yes we see the world differently. I just don't understand why that makes you so angry.
Maybe I wasn't clear. I think we need rules & consequences. In fact, I spend a substantial hunk of my life trying to get parents, school administrators, even cops to stop turning a blind eye to kids' problematic behavior. I think rules save people. Rules should be firm or can even be strict and still be applied with compassion.
If you are asking if I always practice what I'm preaching: Heck no! I fall short all the time.
If you felt attacked, I apologize. I think you are an upstanding person and a very committed parent..
Actually, I meant Dave as in Dave's Garden Dave, but...hmmmm--I think my fellow Nutmegger, Dave, could fill the bill ^_^
I met DG's Dave, he is pretty young, think he could be my grandson.
Having been a Foreign Student adviser, I really had to be very diplomatic when I was in charge once a week Americans and foreign students met to encourage learning from each other. Quite a few times heated arguments ensued between nationals who with different point of views. Perhaps you can imagine who they were, they still are fighting some where.
I knew you meant "the Dave".
Phoebe, I keep trying to find your "town". Do I have to wait for a twister?
I'll show you mine if you show me yours :-O LOL
Doesn't bother me one bit that you have a different outlook, Dave. Don't expect everyone to think alike. I do object when discussions become personalized.
Yeah, I knew you meant Dave Whittinger - THE Dave of Dave's Garden. He's only in his early 30s I think. He's a computer whiz. (And a gardening enthusiast).
Phoebe! My dirty mind led me somewhere it didn't want to go!
Hee-hee! Couldn't resist a little humor ^_^
I don't think he's the same computer whiz that is somehow confused with Linux though. ☺
Edit: Got it! - he co-founded the technology news website, called Linux Today.

Victor,I went out of my way not to personalize it. I'm still not sure what offended you. I think you became very personal.
