Coffee Break #25 - First snow of the year

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Thanks Jen! Have you ever played the game? It is the most maddening sport I have ever participated in. I HATED golf and made fun of anyone I ever knew that played....until I played. Oooops...now I'm kicking myself in the butt cause I never played in 09. That will not happen in 10. I will make it a point to play as much as possible next year. Can anyone help me with the explanations of the allure of Golf? And why is it, when playing golf that we all have the worst potty mouth??

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

The word 'HATE' is such a strong word for something so innocuous as the game of golf. Why that word is used as frequently for anything one dislikes is very strange to me because there a lot more awful happenings in this world that are worth hating.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

You have a point Dave. I was one of the ones that hated the Yankees. Not to the point of rooting for "anyone" playing the Yankees, but a few years ago I was rooting for the Red Sox in post season. However, in the past few years I became a Yankee fan through osmosis. The other half is an avid fan and watches almost every game. I came to know the players and then became a fan. They have a roster of great players (albeit paid for) but also they're great guys. However, Roger Clemens was lower than pond scum. I disliked him intensely (and still do) and couldn't get past him.

But why we do attach adoration to a sports figure, or actor, or singer and expect them to live a life without blunder. Is it because we live our lives with so many missteps that we want someone to to be better? Or that when we put these people on a pedastal, and they fall, we feel better about ourselves? Whoa...am I getting way too carried away?

edit: spelling....it's late for me

You're right Marie, hate is often overused. I think it is used to fully describe someone's dislike for something, but like many cuss words that have become everyday language it has lost it's true meaning.

Uuu! I like the 'yankees'! 'Yankees' means something like northerners and southerners and I like the cold not the tropics so I like the word 'Yankee'! also, they hired Jackie Robinson which was a brave & nice thing to do at the time! - and they also had 'Mickey' mantle and I like 'Mickey Mouse, so I like them for that too! - but I don't like baseball, I find it too boring....
* anyway...
Golf is like a status symbol kind of thing... you get real expensive stuff to hit the tiny ball, a lot of physics and mechanics theory and pay a lot of $ for memberships in clubs and then you can get on the field and act like a jerk and make dirty business deals... never interested me, reminds me of tennis.

- BUT it's all 'big money' and that will keep manufacturers and clubs and millionaires in private jets and exclusive clubs while all the other little people talk about how much they know about a game they can't play and can't afford a ticket to,
(which in turn keeps us all talking a lot of nothing about nothing!) lol!

Civilizations usually capitalize on hero(s) and sports to keep morale high, thereby increasing productivity & contentment while spreading culture and increasing weath, 'keeping the citizens happy' has proven to be a wise policy. for example: Nero was quite content in feeding the Christians to the lions while he 'burned Rome' , (so to speak). and Marie Antoinette paid the ultimate price for being oblivious to the plight of the people... anyway it's all supposed to be in fun so...☺

We play cheap golf round here. 30 bucks for the two of us for a few hours of swearing and sweating. Similar to going to the beach ^_^

Sorry, I've been a Yankee's fan since the 60's, when it seemed every series was the Dodgers vs. Yankees. I never could get behind the Phils, even when I lived there. After the All Stars, they always crapped out. Anyone who remembers Connie Mack Stadium knows what I mean: a ride on the Reading, obstructed view tickets only, and a Phil's loss
On the subject of Tiger, is anyone gullible enough to think she agreed to an open relationship and she changed her mind for profit. I don't think he was virgin Woods going into that relationship!!! Ric

Well said WaterCan2. Your historic take on sports makes a lot of sense to me.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

All I can add to to this about golf, I played golf for many years so did my husband. We belonged to a country club but I do not remember any wheeling and dealing among members. We had a couples league, the women league and the same for men. To be out of doors for four hours walking is pretty good exercise. I also was a member of the MA amateur league could play in many other golf courses, (no money involved) I really enjoyed it, also loved to play in Scotland at 11 PM, lol
Other sports we were busy with was skiing, skating, tennis, swimming and volley ball. I miss those days.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I like to golf, it is challenging, and the courses are gorgeous and you get to be outside all day. It probably helped that I got a hole in one my fourth time golfing. We have a lot of reasonable courses here, we like going somewhere different every week, no country club membership.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I say we go back to the gladiator days. A lot more fun. First up - Tiger vs the Amazon women.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

You want to throw Tiger into a ring with a bunch of women? Isn't that what he's been doing? ^_^

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

That's his favorite extra curricular activity, so why not?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, but the fight ot the death is fun!

Maria, you're right about the word 'hate'. It's a powerfully ugly word that should be reserved for very few things - like politicians, mothers-in-law and this dang cold!! ^_^

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

This thread turned "Tiger" on Nov. 28th when the story broke and it's still alive today Dec. 11th.......WHY?
I'll come back when the topic has changed because in my PO it's been beat to death already and there are so many more important, interesting topics to choose from.
Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with what he did but it this is just dragging on and on. Several times while reading this thread a verse from the bible kept popping in my head.
"Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone".

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I agree - no more Tiger! Let's talk about Britney. ^_^

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Good Grief!
How bout those poor peole who took a beating in this storm. 15 foot snow drifts....geez. I think thats why I was expecting the worse and was so thankful not ot have got it.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Pixie, It all depends what our sins are. Some of us could truly throw that stone.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

How often does this happen Victor???
"NYC cop shoots suspect dead in Times Square"
It's my luck that I'd finally get the nerve to come to N.Y. and this would happen while I was there!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

But is it the right thing to do Maria?

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Well, I would not but it suggests to do it, yes?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I think that may be a matter of interpretation.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No, Celeste, that shooting is very rare these days. In the 70's or 80's, if I heard that it would not have surprised me.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Of course it is

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Posted the same time as Victor, answer was meant for pixie

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I really would love to see time square and the Statue of Liberty, central park, ect.... I just don't want to take the meds the doctor wants me to take to get over my anxiety to make said trip. LOL I will though, because I don't want to die with out seeing some of the historic places we have here in the US.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

This thread needs some lighthearted good news after all this negative press. I went to some online news pages and started scrolling. It was amazing that it was so hard to find something cheery to post. No wonder we have anxieties and stress. I challenge anyone to find a news story that isnt negative and gloomy and judgemental. I'm still looking.....

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Pixie, hope you will be able to do that, it is a wonderful journey.
We made certain our children visited them all the well known historical places up and down the east coast, including many of the European ones since that is also their heritage.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

How wonderful Maria, im sure they have fond memories as im sure you do too. I think it's very important for children to know about their heritage.....im still learning about my own!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Come to NYC, Celeste! You won't regret it.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

When's the best time of the year Victor? I was thinking spring time.........

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Besides, who's dumb enough to try to mug Brian?!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Anytime is great except summer.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I watch a show called 'Worlds Dumbest Crimminals' and there are some dumb enough to try it! lol

Christmas cheer saves woman from speeding fine

BERLIN (Reuters) – A young woman in Germany who burst into tears when police fined her for speeding received an early Christmas present when another woman caught for the same offence paid the charge.

Authorities in the western city of Aachen said the older driver was so moved by the woman's crying at the police station that she pulled out her purse and handed over the money.

"It is Christmas soon after all," local police quoted her as saying.

Cute little guys!!

I read a great article about Warrick Dunn yesterday. He's the kind of player that should be headlining the news more often.

Bad bad night. Vomiting, sitting on the throne. Some kind of bug and I hope its not the H1N1 Hiney Swiney virus that mutated.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Sorry to hear that Sherrie, hope you feel better soon!
