FOOD AND FANCIES...AT HOME WITH THE GYPSIES

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

My DIL has had a Hibiscus for about 4 years now and has yet to get it to bloom.

Want to tell her the secret to it venice?

She gave away a clipping from it, and that bloomed...............LOL

OK, need to get my sleep now that I'm caught up for now again.

Oh Dixie, this is Footless ^_^

if you don't hear from me for a few days it's because I went nuts and killed my children and will be resting in the psych ward!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I went through a zillion different hibiscus on different sites until I did find one with variegated leaves, just to be sure I knew what variegated hibiscus leaves looked like. They were pretty obvious.

The DG Varigated Hibiscus certainly looks like the color of my hibiscus blossom and has solid green leaves. But DG Sport one has solid green leaves also but the blossoms have a wide range of colors. So I am putting both names on my list.

Just something to confuse me!!!

lol confusion is half the equation

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Secret: I noticed what I thought was a tiny bud. I gave it Miracle-Gro Bloom Booster. Then my bud really started to grow and now I have many more little buds.

After doing that, I read that Hibiscus need low nitrogen. And that Bloom Booster is in that catagory.

I had a neighbor who had a tomato plant. She gave it high nitrogen ferilizer like regular Miracle-Gro. The stem of her plant was as thick as my thumb and it never had tomatoes. So that is the result of too much nitrogen!!!!

OK I have a question, I am not ahuge fan of dats (mostly cause they smell bad inside the house if they are flowering) so how'd I end up with so many seeds? ah Oh well IF he ever finishes the greenhouse they'll work out there! LOL

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

ok then definately find something else to use!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Why would you be looking to use a growth regulator?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

the bird of paradise seeds say to saok them in a mixture of that and water for awhile before planting. but that one seems toxic and I don't think I want open cups of that sitting around with kids in the house

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Must be directions for commercial growers as Ethrel is available to professionals and not sold for residential use.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I still have my license, but it's expensive and can be nasty....if inhaled (trust me on that one) Don't think I want that in the house with a dog and kids who knock stuff over and don't clean it up, if these all take who wants a pomagranate, I have 3 kinds...LOL

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

oh yea and I have a feeling next year I'm sending you all potted plants for birthdays and christmas and other special events....LOL or I don't know what

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

Kassy, does your DIL's hibiscus get enough sun? Maybe that's why it doesn't bloom. We inherited my uncle's hibby, it had nice red blooms, but where we have it, it never blooms. Doesn't get enough sun. DH likes it anyways.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

hibby seeds I will be starting tomorrow....anybody got any tips they want to share? LOL

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Well Moon he did put up my candy cane arch.
I bought a new pole that the gutter clips screwed onto so I could do the lights.
Climbed out on the roof and wouldn't ya know it biggest piece of junk ever made.

uhg...I hate scarifying seeds, now that I know what that means...LOL

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

my hyacinth is trying to bloom and so are the daylilies...what's the deal...Mother Nature is just as confused as we are!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

JJ, let’s see. You put garland and lights on the columns on your porch, there is your fireplace, santa, toy soldiers, small candy canes, large candy canes and arch, your puppy. Where is your snowman? And santa’s face? Oh, and I see lights on your gutters. Is that it?

It looks sooo nice. I can’t wait until Thanksgiving so we can see it all lit up! I just know it will be gorgeous!!!

Oh, my! Your flowers are really confused!

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

well it was really quite warm the last few days, but they are calling for snow for us the sunday after thanksgiving! so who knows

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Boy, Murphy's law on the pole JJ...so sorry....grin Love the arch....bet it just glows when lit. Did you finish roof, or have to go back? I can see the lights along front....looking A Lot Like Christmas.....(la lalalala)

Just afraid some plants are gonna get a rude kick with this "interesting" streak of weather. Snow for you next weekend?

Venice, what did ya decide on the hibiscus?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

yeah today the kids were running around in shorts because it was that nice!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Trina, your hyacinth and daylilies are up and have buds on them? (5a)

Moon and Joy and maybe Dixie, have some flowers bloom year around. Lucky!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, are you talking about Ms Hibbie?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

yes they are so does the daffodils and crocus and my roses and irises started reblooming too! Garden is way confused!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

No paradise here....we still get bugs when you guys get a break....grin and sometimes have to cut the grass and weed in the winter....grin

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

The one you needed to spray for aphids....

That wasn't Ms Prissy Hibbie was it?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, I thought having flowers year around would be wonderful. But with the bugs and weeds, not so much! How is that swamp of yours? Did you get it tamed?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

yeah well right now I'd rather have that...snow sucks!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

It is and shall always be a work in progress, Carol, Grin But hopefully by spring it will be a bit better tamed...lol

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, yep! I just have that one, Ms Pretty Hibbie! She made that wonderful blossom in spite of those horrible bugs. She is so nice.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

LOL

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Sorry, We had an El Captolio at our former house....called her Miss Priss...like she was wearing a ruffled bloomer...I must remember Ms Pretty Hibbie....grin

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

yeah my driver won the championship!!!!!! YEah Happy Dance!!!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Trina, glad your driver won!!!!

They say we are to get snow on Thursday also. I just bet IL and IN won't get snow or rain then. That rain front is headed towards WI. In my opinion, it will by pass both of us.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I hate snow, and I don't really need any rain either!
