Oriental reds?

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Hi everyone! I figured I'd ask my question of you experts. What are your favorite reds? Are there any orientals that are really red?

I got my FF catalog yesterday, and the first Oriental red I saw was Dynamite. I've got several of those and they are more deep pink than red. Beautiful - but not a real red. I had to move them to a spot where the deep pink worked better.

They have Mambo and Tarrango in the catalog, but there are no pictures in PF. Red Alert is a Longiflorum Asiatic, but the PF picture looks good and red.

I know Orientals aren't supposed to last as long as some of the others, but I sure like them best. Will any of you weigh in and tell me what you think? Thanks!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Maybe you would like the depth of dark red that is 'Dark Sensation', or 'Sumatra'. Mambo is a a completely different reddish than those and is more red, but I find horrible to capture on a photo. For a real, true red, I'm not sure the oriental will do it for you. But it seems like those I listed above with their depth of color will get you closer than a pink to dark pink because I would not call any of them pinks.

And if you want a really wonderful red with excellent flower form (in my opinion, of course ;) ) 'Hiawatha' is just stunning, if you don't have it already.

Enjoy shopping for your garden McGlory!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Only red I have is asiatic noid. The rest of the garden is pinks ,lavanders white, yellow, peach.
Good luck with your hunt.
Have you tried B&D lilies?

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I knew this was the place to come for some enabling! LOL I wasn't thinking that I already have Arabian Red, which is a pretty good Oriental red. It's just in a different garden, and heaven forbid I have the same thing in two different places! What's the point of shopping if you're just going to buy the same thing? Ha ha!

Sumatra is ringing a bell. Either I've looked at it, or I got it and forgot, which isn't likely. I don't think I have it though. I am definitely going to try Hiawatha. And I may go ahead and try Mambo and Tarango too just to say I did. Know what I mean? And now ge is sending me off to another place. Shall I let you know how much I spend? Oh dear!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I looked at Orientals on B&D just now to make sure its not a fools errand.
Not too many reds but a few.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

YOU SHOULD ask Moby, McGlory, about 'Mambo', I remember Moby posting hers over the summer, so you may have two people steering you that way. It's really unique in color and there's nothing else that I can say is even close.

'Dark Sensation' has a huge, wonderfully fragrant flower, not to be missed! The color is beautiful.

The way I see it, the easiest and best thing to do would be to order one of each, then you can compare next summer and get back to me on it ;)

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Ah! An experiment! Research is probably even tax deductible!

Moby, are your ears ringing? Where are your pictures?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I would think dear Moby's ears would be ringing, most certainly by now ;)

Ohhhh, Moooooby.......where are you??

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

sounda like fun

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Sorry ~ head congestion is dulling the ringing in my ears. lol

Here's Mambo

You're kind of like Batman, aren't you? Holler your name and you appear. :-)

Mambo is lovely. Would you call it red or pinkish red?

Hope you're congestion subsides soon!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Mambo has a slight raspberry tone to it but it's very red. Hard to capture.

Red Alert

In this big pic, you can see Red Alert in the front center, a stem of Red Velvet in the center back and Heart of Passion to the right.

And yes, Batman was my hero from way back. Just check out those shades ~ ;)

So the conclusion would be back to what magnolialover first suggested -- buy at least one of each to have a fair comparison. :-) Maybe ge1836 will join in the research?

Snazzy shades, by the way. Since it took you so long this time to answer the call, Moby, perhaps we shall install a Mobylight. (Is that what they called it? The Batlight that Gotham City shined in the sky to call Batman? Seems like that name isn't right.)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

We could do that... 'course there's always the telephone. lol

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Telephone? You mean talking? Like in English and stuff?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Yeah, you know that thing you had implanted in your head?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Funny!

Mags, I did what you suggest. I planted several reds (with the PNWLS prices I could buy three for the price of one) and I am testing them, particularly Hiawatha and Red Alert. The Vamp is bright red, but I can't find it any more. I do remember trying out one of each of six orientals and none of them worked. When I asked The Lily Garden what I did wrong, assuming it was my error (which it probebly was) they responded that they wanted me to be happy so they sent me SIX of a lily they said worked well for a lot of people. Sorbonne. That was in the spring of 2002 and they are still with me. And that's why they get an order from me every year.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I like the Lily Garden too altho you were lucky to be in touch with them.
They loose points on the customer service as far as I'm concerned. I will
order from them again but no hope of finding out if they recieved the order or when it will be shipped.
Just hope and pray.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

I'vr never had anything but exemplary service, and I have ordered for at least six years.

And they are a Watchdog top 5 lily supplier.

Glorious plants too. Rosepoint Lace.

Thanks for the rosepoint lace pix.
I planted those a month ago from The Lily Garden.
I do love her lilies and she sends a treat.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Donna ~ is this the Vamp you're referring to? It has an orangey center that I find a bit glaring for my tastes, but you know where it belongs in my garden.

Lily Nook carries it http://www.lilynook.mb.ca/Catalog/asiatics-q-z.html

ge Judith (Lily Garden) is an amazing hybridizer, she works mostly alone in the office, so I have found contacting her via email is best. I will forever buy from her as she is one of the kindest and most generous in the business, besides being one of the best hybridizers. She is amazing and although she may take greater than a day or two to get back to you, I'd say the rest of it makes up for what she lacks in business, in my opinion. I just love the Lily Garden!

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

I was fascinated when I uploaded a pic to plantfile. Mine is a honking, screaming red.

I have to agree with you there! Doesn't look like they're quite the same critter ~ where did yours come from?

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

It came from White Flower Farm and, you know, it was never offered again. Not only that, but I can't find ggogle images of it either. I wonder whether they made a mistake and then got quiet about it.

And it isn't that the color is distorted. Here it is with Rosepoint Lace so you can judge the color.

Is this one of those things that make you go hmmmm?

Edited to ask, where did yours come from?

Edited to say that further down the thread it was pointed out to me that Red Alert is from The Lily Garden.

Edited again. Where's my brain/ The Vamp is from TLG. Red Alert is from B&D.

My Rosepoint Lace came from The Lily Garden,I just planted the bulbs in Oct.
New gardens here so not much history to report.
This is her pic.
Yours seem whiter than her pic.

Could one of them be 'White Lace'? There is also clearly a difference in blooming for regions on many, many varieties of lilies. With our very cool summer here (09) I had some amazing variations that I hadn't ever seen before.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

For some reason, Lily Nook never comes up on google searches for me either. Maybe those rascally Canadians like to keep their treasures a secret. ;)

I believe you that your color is correct. Aside from the gold blush in the middle of Vamp, comparing the color of the stigmas is what makes me think they're different. Maybe yours is something like Monte Negro which is a beautiful red, and perhaps an option for replacement.

McGlory, have to looked at Rio Negro? http://www.lilybulb.com/l7502.html

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I agree Mags. I noticed much richer colors this year.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

White Flower Farm has been very knowledgeable when I ask questions, even about lilies purchased in past years. Some of what they have comes directly from the Lily Garden too. Maybe emailing them what it was, with a picture may help ;)

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Hi Mags,

It's definitely Rosepoint, although I considered White Lace. It's our light, which bleaches both photos and sometimes plants. If a plant is described as shading to pink in cooler weather, and white in hot, I will get the pink effect at the end of the season.

I got RP from both WFF and The Lily Garden. When I was first growing lilies, I didn't understand the difference between the growers and the "consolidators" like Wayside and WFF. Once I did, I started buying from grower/hybridizers whenever I could. Hence, you are seeing, in the photo, RP from 2 different suppliers.

Hey Mar,

I had a look at Monte Negro and it's not that. I suspect we may never know what "The Vamp" looks like. I do know that when you perform a google search ours are the only images and the other written result (no pic) is a Hortiplex description that states that it is an asiatic. We may never solve the mystery. Kind fun!

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Hey, I stand corrected. The Vamp came from The Lily Garden. I installed it in 2002 and it first bloomed in July of 2003. (I keep nauseatingly exhaustive records). I also notice that The Lily Nook's The Vamp is from Cebeco Lilies. The late Ed McRae was the husband of Judith of TLG. One lily may have borrowed a little pollen from the other. Mags is our lilium historian (at least mine). She knows the stories behind the stories that I read in my lily books.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

They are two different lilies. "Vamp" from Cebeco is an Asiatic Lily that looks like Moby's lily. "The Vamp" is an Easter lily hybrid that was sold by the LG in their 2002-2003 catalog. Note that the LN lily lacks "The" in front of Vamp. Vamp is a registered lily; "The Vamp" is not. Hope this helps!

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Ah! Great! Thank you.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

You're welcome!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

OK, I'm thoroughly confused. Sooo... your red lilies are neither Vamp (asiatic) nor The Vamp (a longiflorum x), your intended purchase, but instead got these red lilies that appear to be asiatics? They're such a fantastic color.

Am I getting close? Maybe I just need a nap. lol
