Corn is among the most popular of vegetables. People look forward all year to fresh corn on the cob in late summer. Very little compares to the fresh taste of corn picked from the garden, moments before it is cooked. Corn loses it's flavor very rapidly. Once it is picked, the sugars immediately begin to turn to starch.
The only trouble with corn, is it requires a large amount of space to grow. Most backyard gardeners grow tomatoes because they can grow as few as one, and take up very little space. Even urban backyard gardeners have enough space for a single tomato plant. Planting Corn requires a minimum of three rows (ideally four) of about four feet in length. The space between rows needs to be three feet. This minimum space allows adequate pollination for the corn. Corn is pollinated by pollen from it's tassels (the tops of the corn plant). Compare this to tomatoes, which are self pollinating (which is why you can grow a single plant).
I only have 4 more to vote on in the photo contest. Some of the photos you can see that people have professional equipment. It is hard to decide which ones to vote for.
ok once I get all these potted up how am I gonna entertain myself all day again? Make more right? LOL
Oh I feel so bad, NOT! I just threw a plant out I hate
Which plant did you cast a judgment on, Trina?
What are you talking about Trina, it is a full time job just to keep em all wattered lol
asperagus fern, I didn't really like the plant in the first place but we also finally figured out exactly which plant Matt was allergic too! So It went to the compost pile
OH and flowers, Mulberries are a very mild berry that grows on trees. We have a number of mulberry trees here. The birds keep planting more for us. I never had them until I met my BF. His oldest one was about 25 to 30 feet tall, and it fell over one night.
We have grapes too, but we have wild ones. And currents, that I had to tell my BF what they were because he didn't know what the bush was even though it was growing on his land. And he has rhubarb.
My favorite dessert to make with the rhubarb is a crisp that takes rhubarb, apples and strawberries............YUMMMMM
