CLOSED: '09 Fall Frenzy Swap Page #6

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

I was driving by the park and looking at the white caps on the lake and those little mounds of bright color (of the bitone marigolds) just lured me in. I know the park was closed but I had my camera and took a few pictures, always thinking about putting together a calendar for my gardening friends, and I was so close and noticed they needed deadheading to keep blooming of course, so I snapped off a few seedheads. The mounds were 10 to 12 inches high and really bushy, full of blooms.

That picture of the marigolds worked pretty good so how about pale pink single Hollyhocks? 5 foot tall!

Sharon and Colchie, your requests are in your baggies :-)

I'd spent a few years wanting the large fully double Zinnias too, and finally ordered Benary's Giants from Swallowtail gardens. That pack has lasted me 3 years, so this is my first time saving seed from them. Pinetree seeds offers big, tall doubles in individual colors, I tried several of those 3 years ago as well, and they were really nice.

Mittsy, those Hollyhocks are that short? That sounds cool!

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Neal. Zinnias seem to be my primary cut flowers most of the summer the past few years. You really can't beat them for color. They're one of the very few annuals I grow.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8a)

starlight, do you have any more of the armeria joystick white? My dh says "you can never have too much thrift" course he said that about poppies, too, till they took over the garden!

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Dang Mittsy and her picture of that marigold got me hungry for more marigolds

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I"m going to go out later today...when it warms up a bit.. and take a photo of my Pot marigolds... still thriving in full bloom -- even after a few nights in the 20's and light frost.

they are so bright and cheery.

Southborough, MA(Zone 6a)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Pam, did you start any of the Formosa Lily seeds I sent out last year? I just took a chilly stroll through the gardens and found lots more seed that I gathered. Also found seed ready on some pink trumpet Lilies.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Cris I'll take anything pink, I have a small garden just for pink (Grandmother, mother, and baby sister all had breast cancer)

and whoever it was that asked me what was or who were trying to picture my description of "Marigold, big (mine are 3 ft tall some taller) and smelly meant, they look like mittsy's marigold picture but they are massive!

the rose you see in the center is about 4 to 5 feet tall, by the end of summer when the marigolds died back you couldn't see the roses anymore because they covered it up!

and I have a dumb question, i got a small pot of some plane jane white and orange zinnias in the spring, but over the summer they decided to broaden thier color spectrum they went from plain whites and plain oranges to add plain yellows and plain reds, so I will be adding those seeds shortly to my list, I am going to label them 'Mixed colors' I do not know what colors will come true from the seeds!

Phew. I decided to take the rainy afternoon and start putting everyone's oinks in baggies with their names on them... glad I didn't wait until last minute like last year... there are a lot more of us!

Along the way, double checking everything, I discovered a bunch of seeds that I hadn't posted! They are at the top of the list with today's date. Also added 2 more Geranium Tornado Orchid and one more ruellia below.

I don't care I am oinking for the orchid!!!!!

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Geranium Tornado Orchid?... Just checking :-)

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

yes! I was trying NOT to oink for anything else, but you got me!

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

You got 'em!

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

woohoo Happy Dancing Now! LOL

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Chuckling here... there were there all along Katrina, had one left... added 2 more :-)

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I probably overlooked them in my excitement the first time and then tried to promise myself I wouldn't oink anymore! Hubby probably wishes I was sending plants away for this instead of seeds! But that's only because I don't think he has it figured out yet that more seeds will be coming...LOL

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

While outside earlier, I also found lots of seeds on the white Liatris and bagged a bunch. I haven't noted any listings for them and thought there may be interest.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Neal, I would love some of your white Liatris. I have purple.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Ooh, I'd love to try the white also, my purple ones should be blooming next year!

Here are a few lonely flowers... need any? I have lots!
They are tall pink begonia, Ageratum Leilani blue, purple chives, larkspur and tithonia torch :)

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Helps if I attach the photo...

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

That Ageratum is really pretty. Have they been easy to grow from seed?

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Neil -- put me down for some white... i'll do them both, and hopefully will see them bloom before i move *wink*

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Neil -- according to my notes... for teh Ageratum... i WS'ws "alot" and got 1. but it is sooooooo pretty. Mine too is still blooming. I've been sprinkling seeds all over the beds back there.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Hmm, this ageratum... super easy... I think I have a few volunteers already actually, I wasn't very good about deadheading this year, was trying to save as much seed as possible of Everything!

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

both of the blues are pretty. I can't wait until next year! get all these (ok not all but some of each) seeds started and I'll have a garden instead of a weedpit and can actually use my backyard! LOL

Kannapolis, NC

Neal: I've oinked by D-mail for some of those dark blue and purple columbines. I have columbines in full sun and they are thriving and reseeding all over the place. God knows what would happen if I put some in shade where they belong!! Jump back, Loretta!

Klstuart, that was a lovely collage. I did like the larkspur.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

You got 'em Terese. That's my first oink from you isn't it? We've discussed a couple of plants, but this is your first seed request isn't it? Your baggie has now been filed, LOL.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Kelly and Lynn, I've got white Liatris in your baggies :-)
Hemophobic, both Columbines are in your baggie :-) They're both really awesome Columbines, the blue being my favorite I've ever grown. I dropped lots of seed as I harvested, and have seen seedlings around the mother plant- can't wait to see a big drift of those form!

Larkspurs are an all time favorite annual for me, and I'm thrilled to see I'm not going to need to sow any next spring. There are thousands of seedlings out there! Any of you who grew them for the first time this year, keep an eye out for babies. The little things are winter hardy, and will sleep through winter and get an extra early start in spring. I have a theory that collecting the seeds actually helps disperse them at the right time. I get lots more reseeding the years I collect seed from them....or maybe its like washing your car making it rain, LOL.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Cool! Makes me want to go out in this mess and check around my plants! I only had a few this year. Some of my seed is actually from a commercial packet. Planning on sowing a lot next year. Do they wintersow then? Maybe I should just direct sow them now... hmmm.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

My best Larkspurs have always been direct sown. I've successfully wintersown them before, but they didn't get as tall and showy. In your zone you could probably sow them now.

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Neil, if you didn't have all those Larkspur babies, would you be Direct sowing them now?

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Added more Datura Black Currant Swirl and Bush Morning Glory.

Can add more Datura Discolor if anyone wants some, just let me know!

Beaumont, TX(Zone 9a)
