oh jackie, I have bags and bags of seeds on vines all over this house.. my poor dh is going crazy.. problem is, I hate to throw any out.. I don't sell on ebay.. what am I to do with a kazillion seeds? I can't just send them off to people, i would go broke from postage..i bet I have at least a thousand of the messina creeper alone.. and those are outlawed most states I think..what should I do? burn them?
Morning Glories 2009 #21
LOL! I was reading Debra and Jackie's conversations and am just LOL! I am glad that I am doing the MG seed swap. I got a lot of seeds from the vines I grew this year and will never, ever grow them all. So the next best thing? Swap seeds with others! :-) I am actually more excited for others to grow them than I am for me to grow some of the seeds myself! LOL! I especially get a kick out of newbies to Morning Glories when they post photos and comments and get very excited about MGs! I know this swap is going to make some of them very happy! :-)
Well ... I finally did it!
Did what? you ask.
I pulled up all the MG vines and trashed them. (Of course collected seeds first! lol) The rust fungus made a mess of all of them. They were all just about dead anyway, but it can be quite the chore to clean up the trellises and poles. I just take my pruners and just chop, chop away! I dumped all the soil in each of the 5 gallon pots into the 3-tiered garden bed. I've decided to plant all my potted daylilies in that bed along with a bunch of butterfly plants. Boy! The butterflies were out in full force today! I found a bunch of caterpillars, too! :-) It was a good day in the garden and the weather was sooooooo NICE!!! Low 80s/high 70s! :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) I will back out there tomorrow transplanting daylilies! :-)
oh Becky, you are so lucky to have such nice weather still.. it was cooler and cloudy today, but I still got out and cleaned off the patio, covered up the beds with leaves, and found three vines in pots still vining with new leaves sprouting, so ooo.... now they are in the downstairs garden sheese! I also found some baby pentas I planted from seeds hiding in the front flower bed, got them out and into some little pots.. n0w i have three rooms downstairs going again.. *sigh* oh.. and then theres the upstairs LOL.. okay so I emptied out a pillow case today, where I had cut down the vines from rebecca, , emmas mix, and Roman Candy and put them in there to dry together.. threw in some yellow pear tomatoes while green so I would know which vines they were.. out came the yellow pear tomatoes nice and ripe and ready to eat.. good thing I had rebecca ribboned.. Although she is easy to tell from other I. Purps I think.. she has a stripe..
what I do is break them open in the sink in a deep pan, run warm soapy water in them and scrub them, all the stuff that floats I pour out, rinse and strain, then dry on newspaper.. I then take all the floaters and stuff out to where I got them from and throw them down.. we will see if my theory of if it floats it isn't germinated ready enough stands true. Remember these? what were they called? no seeds from them dang it..
Debra - Nice blooms! Your bloom photo looks like Purple Blizzard, but I don't know for sure.
I have a feeling that floating seeds WILL germinate! I clean my seeds too and always have floaters. But I've never had any seeds that didn't germinate unless it was my error. Planting them too deep by accident. If the seeds you tossed outside are I. nils and you get snow ... they will be destroyed by the freezing weather. If the seeds are I. purpureas, then they will germinate and surprise you in the Spring! :-) I. purpureas can often stand up to harsh weather temps and conditions.
Lovely blooms Debra, don't have a clue what they are.
Washing, cleaning seeds? Are you girls crazy? lol
I do good just to throw mine in a film canister and stick on a label.
Becky, Yes, lots of fun sharing our seeds and making others happy.
Speaking of butterfly plants.. did you plant any of those seeds i sent? I did and I have them up and growing now.. had to move them inside since the ones I planted were the tropical ones called MONA..I still need to send you tropical milkweed to you and Marie her bahaunia tree.. since I bought a car it has been harder to fund packages. little bubbles are easy from work. bulk packages are not. Maries' bahaunia finally is sprouting new leaves from its move inside. it went into shock. wonder where she is at>?
Thats Right! I had planted the last two of the ones you sent me last winter.. and forgot i did, and then planted the wedding bells in there too.. I planted both of those too late to get seeds from them dang it..
well, if those i. nils do sprout this spring.. that would be cool, especially if they are under two feet of leaves in the winter..
be good if the messina creeper doesn't sprout to, it dropped a ton of pods. I felt like taking the big shop vac out to sweep up that area LOL
oh that first one is lovely.. what is it?
It was sent to me by someone here, maybe they will know it. I plant them, but don't keep track of them.
Deb, Did Becky get the butterfly sds? You sent me stictocardia mac,
albivenia, and pes-caprea.
Marie is around, I sent her pkg a few days ago and Kays pkg. I am
so behind. I would like to get all mine mailed out before Thanksgiving.
A species Gloxinia I think, maybe perennis or something similiar.
With the little orange red guppy flowers.
that is a cute plant, jackie..
I am also behind on sending out packages, I am working on more packages Tuesday, my next day off.. I was sick for a couple days and didn't do anything except sleep and be sick, so now I am really behind. Tonight I gathered some dark drk blue seed pods off the branch I had in front of the kitchen window, since it is supposed to freeze and snow tonight. from this branch here.. ( pic from earlier this summer) the pods were visible from the kitchen window.. I just couldn't let them drop.. z*sigh*
gardenpom's photo is a Blue Star vine that looks like it crossed with possibly Flying Saucers because of the flecks in the bloom in the foreground. BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Butterfly seeds? If Deb sent them to me, I am sure I got them. I just don't remember what they looked like. LOL! And if I did get them, they are here in one of my binders waiting on late winter/early spring so I can sow them. :-)
I re-did the 3-tiered bed today and added Pentas and mini Zinnias as well as a nice sized bushy Black and Blue Salvia for the very top tier. And then I added a LOT of daylilies. I got seeds from Seedsower a year ago in a trade and most of them germinated. I had them all growing together in two long planters but they were very, very crowded. So decided to seperate and transplant them before the cold weather of winter comes. They are planted in the bottom and middle tiers of that bed. There must be 50 daylilies! (I didn't count them because it got dark.) But they are all crosses that seedsower created. Unfortunately, I I wasn't able to mark them when I planted them in the containers, so when they were transplanted into the bed it will be a surprise to see what they produce when they bloom. They were so crowded in the container that some had large roots and some had very small root systems. They were all competing for nutrients and water. They are tough plants! That's for sure. I think daylilies are my next favorite plant next to MGs! :-) Both seem to do well here in Florida. :-)
Jackie - I like your little orange red guppy flowers! I bet the hummers would like them! :-)
Debra - Nice bloom photo ... I am the same way ... I HAVE to go out and collect those seed pods! Though ocassionally some do hit the ground and sprout! LOL!
Debra, glad you're feeling better. I hope I don't get sick,so much to do.
I love that beautiful bloom, the color is special.
We could have flurries Tues, not ready for that.
Becky, you got a lot done today. Wish I had some of your energy.
This little Gloxina blooms winter thru early summer, brightens up
winter days.
Beautiful bloom photos Jackie, Teresa, and Helena! All I have blooming right now is my Spanish Flag and Purple and Pink Flaked I. purpurea vines. I removed all the I. nils from their pots. They finally died. :-( I am off to bed... Zzzzz

Wow! All those bloom photos are gorgeous!!! Nice to see so many different ones this time of year!
John - Love the large leaves on yours! Anyone have an ID on his vines?
