The weather has been unfavorable here on the east coast for photography, especially the last week or two. Nonetheless, I squeezed out a few photos during that time. Here is a 'Great Egret' gliding low across the water.
DAILY PICS - VOL. 255
Wonderful shot of the egret, Linth. Love that wingspan against the water!
Dave
Nice start to the new thread Linth, beautiful shot of the Egret (feathers are nice and preened). Nice shots of the Bluebird's Dave.
For some reason the adult bluebirds have begun chasing the eight juveniles, whenever they come near them. They have tolerated them for the past several months and it is too early for Papa to worry about competition from the young males. Here is a scene from a week or two ago.from a card I just got around to looking at.
Great weather forecast for this week, so we decided to get out in the RV. We are parked at Lake Lawtonka in the Wichita Mountains of SW OK. Pic was taken at dusk yesterday. Lots of small lakes on the NWR and have quite a variety of waterfowl. Not huge numbers. Lots of migrating Franklins and Herring Gulls on the big lake and some pelicans. We saw our first Spotted Towees and Rock Wren in OK yesterday.
Beautiful pics Linth! Love the Egret and Snow Geese. Thanks for starting the new thread!
Dave, Wonderful pics of the Bluebirds and Goldfinch!
Red, That is a gorgeous area!
This is a unique area. I've been camping in the Wichitas since I was a kid and this is my favorite time of the year.
Tomorrow we are going down to Hackberry Flat which is a wetland managed by ODWC about 50 miles from here. It was a natural wetlands that was drained in the 30's for farming, but still too wet much of the time to farm, so converted back to a wetland. It's a stopover for thousands of Sandhills and whoopers are often seen here when migrating through. Once belonged to Comanche Chief Quanah Parker.
Met this guy at Lake Quanah Parker yesterday. He decided he wanted by birding spot for a nap, so I gave it to him.
Dave, Always enjoy your bluebirds.
Great start Linth!
Nice as always Dave!
I would give up the spot too! LOL
Fantastic shots, Linth. I love the shot of the Snow Geese in your second post.
Dave, your Bluebird shots are always amazing.
Nanny, you surprise me. I'd have thought you wouldn't hesitate in standing your ground against some entitled bison. LOL
Nice Bluebird photos, Dave.
Looks like an excellent place to hang out, reddirt.
gardenpom, I always like to see the male Painted Bunting, a rare sight this far north.
Here is one more 'Snow Goose' photo. This is my sixth tagged Snow Goose (MH36) that I have photographed and reported this year. When tagged on Bylot Island, Nunavut, Canada in August, 2005 it was already an adult female. Since then, three other sightings of MH36 have been reported, all in Quebec, Canada. So mine is the 4th reported sighting, some 2300 miles from where it spends its summer. They put the neck collars on during the month of August while they are molting and unable to fly. I now find myself constantly searching for tagged Snow Geese among the thousands that visit the mid-Atlantic states during Fall and Winter.
Nice shots everyone!! I missed good opportunities this morning as I drive my daughter to school and can't get to the camera until after 9 am. But I did get this rascal. I figured that I had lowered it enough to keep these guys out (they have a large covered platform feeder for them to use)....guess not!
Linth: That is a wonderful photo of the Great Egret! And, I love the Snow Geese ... never seen them before, Wow ... there are so many and they are really beautiful. It's great that you can get such close shots and are able to sight tagged birds to report back on!
Dave: Great shots of the Eastern Bluebird, I've only seen one at my feeders in the 34 years we've been in our home here, and I went out and bought meal worms which they loved.
Red: That is a gorgeous area ... I've never been to OK and hopefully if my husband ever retires we will be doing the RV thing and traveling the U.S. for awhile. That is a stunning photo of Lake Lawtonka! Love the Bison/Buffalo too ... they sure are huge creatures. I've only seen them once. About fourteen years ago we went to Denver, Colorado at Thanksgiving and one day while there we took a side trip, sightseeing somewhere west of Denver. We were driving along the Interstate and I was reading a book and my husband said "We just passed a field full of Buffalo"! I said "Yeah, right!" I truly thought he was pulling my leg! On the way back it was getting dark so I thought he really had an excuse to say "Well, you won't be able to see them now", but I did see them, lots of them .. and what a sight it was, a large herd of Buffalo in a snowy field. Of course later I read that many folks raise Buffalo like they do cattle! ^_^
Gardenpom: I've only seen Painted Buntings at our feeders twice over the years ... aren't they the prettiest bird! Great shot of the Aningha's/Cormorant's flying overhead! I love Mocker's ... some folks think of them as pests but they are so much fun to watch and listen to the different vocals! Every spring I cut up berries, raisins and nuts and sit a large tray out on the brick wall in front of the house ... it's fun watching the adults back and forth, back and forth to feed their young but it's also a lot of fun when the young ones leave the nest but still require mom and dad to feed them! This past spring the juveniles would sit on the wall next to the huge tray of berries, screaming for the parents to feed them!
sacarvounis: Love the Jay ... it's hard to keep them out of the seed no matter how hard you try, isn't it? I gave up trying years ago and now feed whoever passes through, whether it's the birds during the day or the Raccoons and Possum who sometimes seem to finish it up during the night.
I just left the previous link - Man oh man, you people have been busy!
P-lady - those sandhill cranes were nice. especially the "posing" one.
nanny and chris8 - nice B-jays. I haven't seen one lately.
pelle - that White-throated Sparrow is something. I love the yellow on its head. and the two "bleach spattered" birds are cool.
AND NOW FOR THIS NEW LINK:
linth - I was at a local park Satuday and Great Egrets were everywhere. I post some pics later.
CousinDave - as always, your BB pics are great. I also enjoyed the Goldfinches. I still have lots Columbus, GA
r-d-retiree - nice buff, we don't have many of those here in Columbus. :)
g-pom - that male Painted Bunting is great. I only wish one would wander by here.
sacarvounis - I would liked to have seen the contortions that B-jay did to get in your feeder..
Now, I got to see who at my feeders,
Bye all
Hack
View from the front porch. Got another lifer this a.m.-- Hermit Thrush. Went back inside and got the camera, but he was gone when I returned. Several thousand ducks on the far side of the lake this morning, but too far away to identify and no access to that side-- that's why they are there. :) Hundreds of Coots on my side of the lake mixed in are a few ducks and geese.
Beautiful ... both the scenery and the ducks!
Oh, what a neat photo of that little bird on the huge sunflower head!
plantladylin-- Couldn't believe how fast these sunflowers were picked clean,
and I always blamed squirrels.
Very cute shot of the Chickadee dirt! Jersey birds, :-)
I was outside filling and cleaning feeders when I turned and looked up to see a beautiful Red-tailed Hawk in the top of a tall cotton tree in the neighbors yard. I silently begged him to stay put as I quickly went into the house for the camera and tripod. As soon as I got setup and was ready to take the picture he took off. 2 pics
Nice shots, pelle. That first shot is spectacular !
