Question about men?????

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Yep Victor, makes me think those underground bunkers people were building in the 50's are not so silly anymore.

Bunker in anyone?

My husband had pneumonia a couple times as a kid, so when he gets the flu it often goes to his chest. We've both been working out of the house for the past 7 yrs or so, and only time he gets sick is when we meet up with friends. What a time for me to start working in an office. He did get the seasonal flu shot though, so that's good.

And Congrats to all the anniversaries!

Provocative title for this thread. I had to peep in. I have no SO so I gets to do all the chores on my own after a 40-hour workweek and 15 hours of commuting weekly.

My SIL thinks that I have all this free time because I don't have kids. Yeah, right. My brother is a saint and does 1/2 the work inside plus bill paying even when he does everything outside - and this after working a full day.

My parents pretty much split the chores. They were like a well-tuned machine. My Dad's mom relied on him a whole lot to take care of his younger sibling and by the time he had his own kids it was second nature to him.

They will have been married 67 years on November 26. Dad is 91 and Mom will be 90 if she makes it to next February (sigh - she just fell and broke her hip).

Congrats to your parents, katie59..hope your mom heals quickly.

My brother's MIL broke her hip at 90----she will be 103 in Jan.---still has all her faculties, & is in her own home--just has to have a woman stay with her during the day. Her GS does live next door to her.

Wow 103.

Wow - good health to all the young seniors!

67 Years of marriage, thats amazing!!!!!!!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Robindog - that is heartening news - to know that one can defy the odds and fully recover at 90. Congratulations on to her on attaining 103!!!

Amazing you guys! My grandmother who lives on her own at 93, fell and broke her hip last spring. She rehabbed in a nursing home and when I spoke with her, she kept saying " you know these places....places you come in and never come out of alive!" She was so afraid they would keep her there. Well, she is pushing 94 now and her best friend is 103, nearing 104 and lives in her own home too, with help. Grandma made it back to her own place again in a relatively short time. She totally amazes me. Both all faculties in place.

I thought this was the cutest thing her best friend said recently when we visited:
Yep, I'm still here (with the sweetest smile). Sometimes I wonder why, but I guess it was to have lunch with you guys today.

They are the most adorable two old friends you've ever seen!

67 years is amazing as are the two of them Katie. I bet she will do great. They definitely have minds of their own....and this is a very good thing. Keeps them going strong ^_^

Re anniversaries, DH and I celebrate our tenth this summer. We're planning to restate our vows.

I was coming from a marriage similar to Celeste's. Not quite so bad - he never broke a bone, but constant hostility, putdowns, threats, taunts, and low-grade physical abuse - but not how I wanted my kids to grow up. I NEVER wanted to get married again.

So when DH and I got married in 2000, I felt very tentative about it. We invited almost nobody, I rolled down the aisle in my wheelchair. The steeple had been removed from the church for repairs the week previously. I had a hideous infection in my foot so even if my white sandals had arrived on time, I couldn't have worn them. I wore one shoe and one bandage. We forgot to have music at the reception!

This winter, I stopped going to physical therapy at the hospital where I used to go and started going to a rehab hospital near me. They got me up into parallel bars for the first time in ten years, then had a brace made for my weak R leg, then got me a new walker, then had me take a few practice steps ... nine months later I can WALK 25 ft. with the walker!!!!

Now, naturally, I want a fancy wedding with me WALKING down the aisle with a TRAIN and a VEIL (neither of which were options with the wheelchair). We both spent waaaaayy too long married to the wrong people. We want to do it right.

We were 39 and 49 y.o. when we got married. So 49 and 59 for #10. Who knows what kind of shape we'll be in for #25, which is the next biggie. DH will be 74 by then. My father is younger than that and he's in really tough shape, nursing home etc.

So Bill, that's a VERY long answer for our tenth anniversary plan.

Congratulations to you, carrielamont. It sounds like you've earned every step. Go for it!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Nice pathway, VV! Love it!

Oh, I just love opals. They're my favorite of all precious stones. I like them much better than diamonds.

Sorry to hear about your mother, Evie. I had a friend who hadn't seen her mother in many, many years. Didn't even know if she was alive or dead.

Marie, I felt like a single woman with a man living in my house when I was married, especially with my second husband. With us, though, it was more that I was doing a lot of things I liked to do on my own or with friends, and I felt like he and I had nothing much in common. I really wanted a husband who liked doing more of the things that I liked to do, but I wasn't getting it from him. Well, it's all in the past, now. Hopefully, if I ever get married again, things will be different.

Celeste, so glad to hear your son will be getting his H1N1 shot on Monday. Great! Here's wishing your son has a good surgery!

LOL! JJ, loved the pic of the bunker!

Carrie, that's wonderful that you're taking walks with a walker now! Woo hoo! I love to hear things like that. Wonderful, also, that you finally found a good man in your life. I'm hoping I can find one someday, too.

I had tears in my eyes when I read your post, Carrie---how wonderful!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

It's very exciting and thank you all for your extremely kind words. That 50 ft. trip in front of everybody - you'll all come, won't you? - will be the longest 50 ft. of my life. I feel like I'm training for a marathon ... I sort of am.... At first I didn't tell anybody but now I am making public declarations to keep myself honest and on target! I had better get a lot more graceful than I am now, though.

Karen, and others, I absolutely know the feeling of being "married" and feeling like a single mother. Being an actual single mother wasn't that much different, just more peaceful, plus kids, of course.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I am so glad you decided to share Carrie. I think when the time comes for you the path will seem very short because your sight will be on your true luv waiting at the end of the aisle. I get misty every time I think about it.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

You're coming, of course, right?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Wouldn't that be wonderful if I could? Alas DH only has so many holidays and we are already committed for all of them next year :( We are planning a trip to the NE in fall 2011. Plan is to fly to Montreal and road trip through VT, MA, NH, ME, NS, NB and PEI.

edit: oops and RI too. How rude to forget RI.

Don't worry. It's so small - everyone forgets it. ^_^

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Carrie - everyone will be looking at the Love and Pride and Happiness in your hubby's eyes. You will be doing all that practicing for nothing!! Besides how ungainly can you appear when you are walking on air?

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Carrie - I will be there in spirit. I'm so impressed by your efforts and your willingness to share your challenge and your goal with all of us.

Seems to me that you're training hard not just so that you can do the walk, but so that you can do it well enough that you don't have to think about it when you're doing it and you can focus on the beauty of the moment.

I would love to be there, Carrie. Just let me know when, and I will see if I can come. You aren't too far from me.

Sounds like a great trip. Glad to see Vermont on there :D

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I will post a 'Ready or Not Here I Come' thread eviebeevie with route and timing closer to the trip as I would like to see many DG gardens (hint, hint). I will bring Bernard Callebaut chocolate from our chocolate factory for garden tour snacks ^_^

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Is it as good as Mrs. See's? If so, (or even if not) I will break into the luvliest garden I can find and give you a tour.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I've never had Mrs. Sees but now of course I MUST Carrie. I want a tour of YOUR garden which is very special from the pics I've seen. You think you will luv Bernard. When I went to Denver this spring for a DG gathering I held up the customs line writing out the name and best Bernard buys for the US customdude. I offered him a taste for an 'official customs inspection' but I think there were too many cameras so he declined (but he winked).

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i like chocolate dnut
