give me 25 dustin pedroia's and i'm happy.

jeter never would have gotten a gold glove if he did not play in NY - he is good and that is where he tops out - and dave, they make up some of the intangibles as i pointed out during the angels series when he had two players telling him to go to second for abreu and he got all the credit - NY media fiction

South Hamilton, MA

Dear Nut & Dave Hope you both continue to recover without pain. We all are on your side.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Karen,
Which flu shot did you get? From what I understand the seasonal flu is not here yet and we probably have H1N1. They don't actually test for it and may tell you you have type A. Anyway, that's what hit me last Friday and led to pneumonia. Its been a tough week. I was almost hospitalized.
DD had it first, DS with broken leg got it after me.DW has been a saint but I think she's about to blow! Even 2 of 3 pets have been to vet with unrelated illnesses

South Hamilton, MA

I've been told that the test cost $300. GD in eastern WA had flu & they thought H1N1 as a friend in their neighborhood had it so figured that was what the other kids had. SIL had a nasty case next as well as younger GD.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks Iris!
And thanks for the good words about Jeter too. I find most Red Sox fans like him.

Bill, let's agree to leave your Jeter obsession alone. I've tried all I can over the internet and your case might require meds. No seriously, you just don't like him and that's "OK"

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Wow! $300!
I heard it takes a long time to get the results and for my treatment was irrelevant

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Where do these stupid rumors come from. The only test they can do is to find out if you have a virus or a bacteria infection. If it's virus & last over a couple days it's most likely H1N1.
With pneumonia I would be very concerned. That's how H1N1 is killing people, it turns to pneumonia.
Karen, how do you know it's not H1N1 when you've been sick so long.

Adding, it took all of 15 minutes to get the test results back when I went to the doctor.

Oh, Allison, you won?!!! I must have missed that somehow. Been kinda just skimming through, as all the sports stuff doesn't interest me. Hard to get a word in edgewise between it all. Congrats!!!!!

Thanks Phoebe and Iris. Getting lots of rest here. Don't feel up to doing much else anyhow.

Dave, I got the season flu shot, and that's what I have. What you heard about the seasonal flu, or influenza A, not being here, I have heard as well, but I don't know what to believe. I'm not the only one around here who's had it lately. My doc told me the flu shot can take up to a month to build an immunity in your system, and they only use the 3 most prominent strains, so you can still catch other strains. So I either didn't have enough immunity yet or got a different strain. I would hope that if the flu test I took does not differentiate between influenza A and H1N1 that my doc would tell me that and not just lead me to believe that I have influenza A without knowing that for sure.

Iris, I have heard that test actually costs $600. Maybe it depends on where you live?

CG, I only know what the doc has told me, and I'm hoping I'm not being misled. I'm gonna call them now, as I keep getting conflicting info.

Karen

South Hamilton, MA

That is the test in eastern WA maybe a local thing to not jam up the hosptitals. You can rule out bacteria fairly easily I would think.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Okay, I just got off the phone with the nurse at my doc's office. I do have the H1N1 virus, as it is the only one here at this time. My doc did not clarify that for me yesterday when I saw her, she just said it was influenza A. I told the nurse I think they should make that clear to their patients, as people should know what their dealing with. H1N1 is treated with the same medication that influenza A is treated with.

Karen

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

I heard that influenza A and H1N1 is different strains of the swine flu. That's probably why it's treated with the same meds.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Oh no! Dave and Karen, I hope you both make quick and full recoveries! You're in my thoughts.

Karen, I agree about all the sports. I'm not interested... Eh, hem... maybe there should be a dedicated sports thread here?

Allison: CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I second that thought, Harper, on the dedicated sports thread!

Karen

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Dave first hope you and your family feel better soon and that your wife dodges the flu.

I will agree to call a jeter detente

now let's talk about that traitor Damon with the pop gun arm :) then we can move on to axle rod (that's what my wife calls him) and his mickey mouse white gloves. and wrap up with an in depth discussion on whether youk sweats more than any human on the earth.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

karen hope you fell better too!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Bill! I'm getting plenty of rest.

Karen

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Hope you are on the mend Dave47 and Cousin Nut. We are all running around like chickens about H1N1 here. H1N1 vacinations started on Monday - only 4 clinics for over 1 million people eek! We are waiting for a couple of weeks to allow high risk people to get their shots first (which is what they have requested). A Flu Clinic has just opened for people with flu symptoms to ease the load on the hospitals which are over run. 25% of kids in school with flu symptoms are testing postative for H1N1. This is going to be a long battle.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Get well wishes for Karen and Dave!!!

I caught something last Monday but I heavily medicated myself and it was gone by Wednesday. Saw the doc today and she said it was probably just a cold. She offered to give me the flu shots but I told her to save it for someone who needs it. Seems no one gets colds anymore with all the other stuff going around. Mine was just sinus and chest congestion so I sympathize with you all. Pneumonia is serious, be careful Dave!

CONGRATULATIONS ALLISON!!!! WAY TO GO!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - and maybe a dedicated H1N1 thread for the forum! Hope you guys feel better. They probably did not want to alarm you guys. Are you guys taking Tamiflu??

I am still undecided about the shot. Did not get the regular one yet either. Did you guys have high fever? How does it compare to the 'regular' one? I am curious to hear this first-hand. Be well!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

On a quest to find the whereabouts of the Great Punkin (GP) this year I read this: "Charlie Brown stated that he had heard on the radio that the Great Pumpkin had appeared in a "very sincere" pumpkin patch owned by someone named Freeman in New Jersey" Onewish, Flowerjen, Venu, other NJites did you know about this?!?!? Does the GP come to your houses?!?!?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Never knew.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Morgan Freeman?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Sorry to hear this awful H1N1 is getting my DG friends down. I hope you all feel well soon.
Bless you all and I hope everyone recovers with out complications.
I have a handi-capped son as most of you know and this is my biggest fear right now. He has no idea what 'blow you nose' means or 'cough it up'..none. This could possibly kill him if he gets it and im scared to pieces.

Cool! I believe Morgan Freeman is sincere but I didn't know he had a punkin patch or that he lived in NJ. According to googleguy there are 300 Freemans living in Freeman County alone in NJ. GP is definitely one well hidden punkin.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

{{{{Pixie}}}}} please try not to worry too much.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Celeste - he is certainly in the high-risk group. Will you get him the vaccine?

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes, Victor, I am taking Tamiflu. I did have a high fever. Had body aches the first few days real bad. Head was killing me. Bit of coughing and phlegm. Some stuffiness in the sinuses. Those were my symptoms. My fever when I was at the doc's office on Tues. was 101.5. I didn't even know I was running a temp. Now I have no fever and I'm sweating like crazy. Was yesterday, too.

Thanks, Celeste. I pray your son does not get it. Hope no one in your family does.

I'd like to chime in and support wha's contention that Jeter's fielding is overrated. First of all, the Gold Glove is an award based more on reputation than merit. Without getting too technical for the non-baseball fans on the forum, I'll just say that Rafael Palmeiro won the Gold Glove award for first base in 1998 - a year in which he only played that position 28 times. In the other 130 games he played in, he was the designated hitter. Granted, Palmeiro played gold-glove level first base the two years prior to winning this, but the fact that he won again while playing so little tells me that there is no objective way the voters can follow all the players in the league and place their votes accordingly. Thus my statement that the award has more to do with reputation than merit.

As for Jeter, he might have the hardware that proves he has won the award, but studies have been done that "prove" that he's actually been the worst fielder at any position in all of baseball:

Thanks, Karen. Hope your recovery continues. Did the Tamiflu help? How quickly?

Thomaston, CT

Great job, Allison! I thought you would win this year! Thanks, Jen, for the welcome back---and Karen & Dave, get well soon---my DH was sick for 5 weeks with bronchitis---it started Labor Day---it took so much out of him---me, too! Glad the Yanks won as DH is a big fan, & there's not much he can do anymore except read & watch sports---hope UCONN rebounds from last week.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Marilyn! Sorry about your DH having the bronchitis. I've had that several times, and it always takes a long time to recover for me. But I've never had it for 5 weeks. That's miserable!

Victor, that Tamiflu seemed to begin working within a day or 2. You have to take it within 48 hours of getting the symptoms, though, and I started taking it even before the tests came back, just as a precaution. Glad I did. I think anyone with flu-like symptoms should get to the doc ASAP, cause if you wait too long, then the Tamiflu isn't gonna work.

Karen

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

g sox - thanks for coming up with some statistical proof - although i understand this year he did pretty good based on the same measurements - that is according to SI anyway - and a new off season work out regime to loosen up his hips. and i thought his walk did that :) sorry i broke the detente :)

i have never had a flu shoot or plan to get the H1N1 - just feel that we should build up our own bodies immunities - my wife the RN and director of nursing thinks i am nuts btw.

Celeste all of the kids at Cindy's hospital have received the H1N1 shot as well as the staff - if your son has not had one yet find out where he can get one.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good to hear, Karen. I used it once for a regular flu and it worked incredibly.

Bill - you will not have any immunity to H1N1 unless you were exposed to it somehow and did not get the full illness, or you received the shot.
