This gives me a whole new challenge to get a photo that's much clearer. I have a balance problem when the heavy camera is shooting over my head.
WESTERN HUMMINGBIRDS VOL.7
That's neat duc! I sure know what you mean about the weight over your head. ;-)
duc, that looks so strange, see Hummingbirds in eucalyptus trees. Nice shots
Thats a beautiful shot Duc !!!! Love it !!
Yeah .. this time of year we have nothing beautiful blooming like that... My crocosmia, beards tongue and hot lips sage are currently limping along with some bloom time left because they are sheltered under the patio, My bird baths were frozen 2 mornings in a row. One of the hummers landed on the back of our little yorkie... it was so very cute but I was not fast enough with the camera as he was giving him heck for standing near HIS feeders !!! lol lol lol Still have probably 5 or 6 hummers hangin out. I am filling feeders more regularly though. We have not had a really hard frost yet. Just enough to drop the dahlias and make the calla lilies faint a little... : )) The hardier stuff is still standing strong so far.. : )))
Oh Nana, I would have loved to see a photo of the hummer on your pup. I bet that was a once in a lifetime sight to see!
Love the Eucalyptus tree shots and ghost bird--- thats really cool-- Duc.
BN-- would of been a great shot. Had me a lifetime shot that was almost
ready for-- a hawk was perched searching for dinner, and got that shot but
the next instant a hummer buzzed overhead and checked the hawk out and
was gone. crazy little bird. missed it but got to see it.
Got me some computer issues to figure out so gone for awhile.
Dirt, your first little girl is adorable! What kind of thief is that? It kinda looks like a Dark-eyed Junco or a Chickadee. Funny thing, the only time I get other birds on my feeders is when the Orioles are here. Your little thief is a cutie!
Congrats back to you Dirt on your contest entries!
That's crazy Dirt! I have never seen any of my birds drink sugar water, though I know they like to. Well, there WAS that oriole! ;)
Congrats to duc and dirt and all who entered the photo contest. The bird pics were outstanding this year and it took me FOREVER to choose my favs.
Thankyou Dahlia and Duc and everyone, Wasn't Duc's hummingbird pic incredible!
All the pictures were wonderful, everyone gets applause.
Speaking of that contest --
OK Duc just between you and me, what did you have to do to get those cute little fawns to
play the parts like in Walt Disney's Bambi to get 3rd? in Wildlife?
That elk I photographed, I had to promise a lifetime membership to
Lodge 2524, you know its the Forks, WA Elks Lodge just to lay still
and not get up and gorge us only 25 feet away. And he did, just chewed a
little and we got some pics and moved away ecstatic and observed from a safer
distance. In the park there were warning signs posted of elk attacks guarding
territory and herd. It was very cool.
Pic: Attentive listener, I was story telling, again. I liked the purplish patch on his head-- I don't think its a camera glitch.
PS the sweet tooth was a Black Capped Chickadee and Resin said they do that- made a believer outta me
after the second and fourth time. So help me if they start looping like crazy and hover I am going to start wearing a helmet.

Dirt, we have deer in our little neighborhood all year and in spring the fawns are just soooo cute. It takes them a couple weeks before they become accustomed to seeing humans walking around-hopefully no one touches them though.
Your hummer is cute. I'm seeing that purple and even have photos of dots of blue on one. No idea where all the colors come from.
Nana, your pictures are cute too! I always wonder what the hummers are thinking when they see the larger birds sitting on their feeders.
I wonder that also duc. Very nice shots Nana!
The more I looked at the 'thief' the more it looked like a
Mountain Chickadee as opposed to Black Capped.

Nana -- would love to see them over here.
Duc - you live in a very wonderful environment.

I still have not notice any Annas in my garden or at my feeders yet. But they are around. Will keep up the feeders just in case. Was at a friend's place in Saltair today and saw a big beautiful Annas male, His colour was really beautiful and he just wanted us to move off away from the feeder.
Hi Vg, Hopefully you will get noticed, when weather gets real bad, they
hunker down and its been so stormy. And if not this winter, hopefully they
notice your pretty inviting flowers in early spring and then the feeder and they will connect.
Did your friend have the feeder up all year and have them around to see them
now? Have a great day and happy that you give them
support (feeders) when they need them.
Very excited this afternoon I had a mature male Anna's Hummingbird in my back garden. There are hummingers that are around Ladysmith, Chemainus and Saltair but this is my first one in my garden, that I have seen that is. My neighbour and I have both kept feeders up. But my last sighting was in Oct. And here it is December 17th!
^_^ Wonderful! ^_^
I can't believe how excited I was to see him. And then to be able to tell my neighbour then she was all happy too. Nice Christmas gift.
Very Cool VG, Just made a new friend and he's
probably happier to have nectar from your
feeder than you are to see him. Yesterday two
new males showed up, investigated everything
colorful and when they found the feeders were
like stinging bees and their beaks seemed
stuck in the holes fueling up. Then the new king showed up
and the chase was on.
Congratulations and thankyou for your perseverance and it is a
wonderful Christmas gift.
I was working in the front yard today when I thought I heard a hummingbird fly by. I found a feeder that had been laying in the weeds all winter and poured in some old sugar water I had left over and hung the feeder up. Later I was able to get photographic proof that it was a hummer. I think it's an Anna's.....What do you think Ducbucin? This is the earliest I,ve seen a hummer in this area. Now I'll have to make up some new sugar water and clean up the feeders.
Wow, congrats Adel! Guess it is indeed time for the two of you to get out the feeders!! weeee.
I don't get to see many hummers where I live now; they don't like the Bitterroot as much as more southerly locales, plus we have a pack of untamed children rioting through the neighborhood pretty much any time they're not in school, doing homework, grounded, or out of the house for the night. I've heard & seen a few, but not closely. My mom's place in Yamhill County, Oregon, however, is a *very* different story! I don't recall the exact date on this photo other than it was very either May or June and definitely 2009. Shutter speed was 1/500 because that's as fast as it can go with the flash (and my flash never seemed to perturb the little thugs in the least!), used optical zoom from a distance of about 12 feet. It's most likely a rufous, what with Anna's summering further south, black-chinned females having a much whiter belly, and no other hummers I know of that are even remotely as common 20-30 miles inland on the Oregon coast.
What a great pic of that Hbird! And Adel! This sure does seem early - how neat!
Nice ones guys!
Next person to get a pic of a western hummingbird please start a new thread "Western Hummingbirds Vol. 8"
