today I got a stern talking to...at work...
I'm feeling so embarrassed, too.
A physician in our division is away because of eye surgery.
I emailed to a group of physicians and their assistants that I felt should know, because of scheduling issues, and told them about his surgery and other pertinant (I thought) stuff.
HR told me that I violated the privacy act...and they'll be in touch with him to see where he wants to take this if he wants to pursue it, etc...

O gawd, I feel so awful...

worst case scenario is, I lose my job. This particular physician is panicky about giving others in the company his home ph#, and he's a high maintenance fella.

Best case is, the physian in question says "Susan wouldn't hurt a fly, so I'm ok with it".
It all depends how he's feeling at the moment.

He and I get along well, but he's had his identity stolen 2x, and I don't know which way he'll "swing" on this.

I've been to a Privacy Act course here, and I really should have known better...

They'll be phoning him, and I hope he'll say it's a "one-off" and HR just gives me a lecture. I'll tell you though... I'm feeling flushed right now, and really contrite...

This is really a huge matter. I'm hoping all my history with the company will stand me in good stead, and that the physician likes me well enough to let this go.
Pray for me, sisters.

Gentle hugs, sistah Susan... praying all goes well.

I heard from HR, and they asked if his daughter (who came by on Friday with his Dr's letter) volunteered the information, and if she mentioned that this was confidential.
I replied that she never said it was confidential, and that she told me all I passed on, and more.
I forgot to mention that she told me in the hallway, near the elevator.....
Anyway, HR mgr said that, as it was volunteered and nothing said about confidentiality, she wasn't going to pursue it further. Also that, in the future, if I was unsure about passing info on, I should speak to her, or her team. For medical leaves, etc, I should get in touch with the OHW mgr.

I am so relieved......... you have NO idea.................

I'm one of those people that only need to be told once.

Phew! Big relief here too!
You're just getting used to a regular paycheck!

When that happened at my old job, HR will always give a written warning for the first offence, then after that.. out you go!

So, there'll be no more next time, even with permission given! Right Susan? Leave it up to HR mgr. to pass the info ;)

Susan I can really understand your being upset. When Ross died I wasn't even allowed to see his messages from co workers on his email at work-most intended for me-because "it would invade his privacy". Go figure. Glad everything is okay.

Hey y'all!

ah me. today I am the mother of a 30 year old, my eldest. she was born at 2:12pm on a Friday in Idaho Falls Idaho.

and when I was reflecting back, I remembered most what I thought about then. some not so good - should have guessed then by what happened that day that certain things were in the future. LOL but what I remember most was how my heart swelled up 3 times, it was so filled with awe and love. nothing else like it in the world. She was a miracle.

Jaye, my Atlas gloves are here!

Oh Susan, so glad it worked out for you! Sometimes they do go overboard about the privacy issues!

and ya know what this darn girl of mine wants tonight for her birthday?

Sushi! yuck.

Bon, sending Birthday wishes to your daughter. Oh how they grow so fast!

oh Susan. I just read your info. that was a close call.

Have worked in HR. it is getting to where you can't tell what to repeat and who to tell. at least the privacy act helps clarify some things. the worst is when I come across a person who demands to know "because it could effect [him/her]" and you cannot tell them. Used to work with a boss like that. and ex MIL was like that - she could get mean if you didn't repeat stuff to her, she'd cause a scene. at least now we can use the privacy act to remind nosy folks about such issues.

but it's so very easy to trip up, hard to always guess "who needs to know what." It was even worse working in Security! So glad things went well for you.
