Thanks for the fixed link! Wow, those are so pretty. Looks like you have a huge yard?
Help!! My burgs are all rooted in water now. Should I pot them or just leave them in water for the winter. Some are starting to send up leaves also. I have 12 cuttings sent to me. If I pot them what size pots do I use?
This message was edited Jan 12, 2010 2:12 PM
Yes you can pot them if you want, just about any size pot you may have on hand will work. Do you have a sunny window for them?
Glad to hear thay are rooting for you! Water them to keep them moist, but soaking wet.
Good luck!
LK
Potting up some of my brugs that have rooted has to be done tomorrow. I rounded up some pots. So glad there isn't anything I have to leave home for tomorrow so there isn't any excuse not to pot them up. Most of mine have lots of leaves, I potted them all in moss. I have one called Lemon Twist that is getting infested with tiny bugs so I better treat that and keep them away from the others. I have all of them under a grow light for now. I can make a very big mess when I pot up plants. I shouldn't be surprised because I make a mess in the kitchen when I cook.
While digging through a cupboard in the garage I found a box marked
Gardening". Lots of good books, plus some old seed catalogs. Back into the habit of throwing nothing away again. Old catalogs went into the recycle bin and
the books I will have to sit down and look at again. No wonder I can't find any room to put things. A bag full of odds and ends of yarn too. I might be surprised if I can get into cupboards that DH has all his junk piled against.
Pegi I bet they are ahpids. I have a huge problem with them every winter on my brugs when they come in.
You better spray those bad things, or they will spread real fast! YUCK!
I'm sure they are aphids and I'm keeping watch on all my plants. I remember years ago I was told to use a cotton swab dipped in alchol to wipe all the leaves infested with aphids. Does that still apply? I'm now hoping for dry weather so I can check out the plants I have out in my garden. Rain is good, but have had enough for a while. So many places are being evacated because of flooding. Thank God we haven't had that happen here.
Pegi I have been just squishing mine here lately.. lost the ladybugs to the garden safe spray I used before they got here.. Tropicman told me to use the qtips with alcohol swab, but I just find them, squish them and sometimes take the leaves off at the same time just to make sure they are clean. It is not warm enuff for them to go outside, so I really don't need alot of leafy stuff on them right now. I have been worried about you guys in California.. Very worried, praying you are all safe...
Debra my ladybugs are diminishing too. Not sure whether they are getting eaten by a wasp that was in here, or the food supply has run out. They did a great job, but I am seeing fewer everyday. They didn't do squat for the mealy bugs on the coleus, but they sure did get the aphids!
I have been rinsing out the pots with water and epsom salts and fertilizer, and misting with soft rain water, as I have another batch of lady bugs on the way. I have no clue what a mealy bug looks like in real life.. only picture..
You all can make your own sprays. I mix 1/3 cup of amonia, 1/3 cup of dish detergent (like orange dawn, and it can be the dollar store brand), 1/3 cup of white vinegar, then I mix 1/3 cup of this solution to mix with 1 gallon of water. put it in a sprayer. It will take several applications, but it will get rid of the bugs. Good luck with the bugs!
Thanks Linda! Did you see your brug baby I posted?
I did see her, she is looking good! Will be waiting for bloom picture pretty soon!
Well, do you think the mixture will be okay for ladybugs that are coming?
I would think so, maybe try it one one or two pleants, and see what happens?
Well, my DH likes this idea alot.. he thinks it would be more eco friendly and cost effective.. thanks! I have three main growing areas.. one in the big room , one in the sons' old room, and one in the freezer room.. I could try it on one of the smaller grow areas before the main grow area..
here is who my best friend is.. this is the joe part of joeswife.. I just am so crazy about him after all these years, he lets me do my thing..
Hello Joe! Nice to meet you! Please let me know how the spray works for you. It even smells pretty good!
He waved, he is turning our Big Boy pHILO FOR ME.. HE DOES LIKE PLANTS, HE JUST LIKES ME TO BE THE ONE TO GROW THEM lol
Nice to meet you Joe!! Going forth to mix up something, anything for the fungus gnats. :)
what ya fixing for the fungus gnats? will this mix work on those too???
Gonna try this. It's been circulating on the coleus forum and seems to be working.
Into an old milk jug add:
2 cups water
3/4 Tbsp ground cayenne pepper
1/3 Shake a bottle of hot tabasco sauce and pour in 1/3
1 Tbsp Caster Oil
Squirt of liquid dishwashing detergent (Dawn or any other)
Shake everything well
Don't have any castor oil, so I'm hoping that isn't a big factor. I'll let you know.
okay great cuz If this is for fungus gnats, I am all over it! Thankfully, my coleus have been untouched by anything so far..
Taters, I planted some of my burgs. They have such a lot of roots and really putting up leaves, I figured I should start putting them in soil. I am so happy with them! How long do you think it will be before they bloom? Next year?
Most brugs will bloom the first year, but there are some stubborns ones, that bloom the second year. Let them grow, and next time it is ready to freeze, cut them back, and make more plants for yourself! Will youplace them in the ground, or keep them in pots? If they are in pots, get them outside as soon as there is no more frost in your are, and then move them to different place, to see where they are happy, so me like lots of sun, some like more shade. Good luck with them, and keep us posted to how they are doing? Once you stick your nose in the bloom, and get a good whiff, you will be hooked on brugs like the rest of us!
Our MG group is going to plant the barrels around our city and we are going to all do our own thing. I was thinking of putting a brug in my pot. Which brugs do you think would work well in full sun? Our weather starts out cooler and we can get into the 100+ some years, do you think one of the brugs would be strong enough to do this? I was thinking of growing a vine up the brug, and plant under it with things that drape down. I have some tall ones already but just not sure which ones would do well in full sun for sure.
I had a bunch of no name brugs in full Texas sun last summer, but I had a soaker hose on almost all of the time. They like to be moist. That sounds really pretty, and I wish you luck with it! Keep us posted please?
BGI is conducting a comprehensive survey open to brug enthusiasts around the world. I know many of you have already received an invitation, but for those of you who have not, here is a link to access the survey - free for anyone to take, and they register you for prizes.

Hello to everyone here! Hope you are staying warm in all this snow.
Have many rooted and in pots(of sorts, anything I can put them in) Brugs. I'm leaving them in the garage and hopping it will not get to cold for them....anyway, that is where most of them will stay.
Have started my Hibiscus seeds and in 4 days, some of them were up. Started them Sat. the 23. They stay warm and damp all time. I'm using a old warming tray, on top of the tray is my oven pan, inside the pan is news paper (thick) the paper is kept wet so the pan will not get to hot for the seeds. The seeds are in potting soil (in the thick paper pots) and are placed on the wet paper.
I planted white, red, yellow and wine hibiscus seeds. The white came first then the yellow. Only one red and one wine have come up so far.
Hugs
Faye
Wow, sounds like you are doing good! Cold here this week, and light rain to go with it, but no snow!
Hey LK can you start a new thread? This one is taking a long time even on high speed. Thanks sweetie. :))
