Time for the 2009 Dave's Garden photo contest!
To me, obvious enhancements would be Photoshopping something into the picture that wasn't there before, altering the color to something that's not real (like taking your pink rose and making it blue), using some of the artistic filters & effects in Photoshop, things along those lines. So to me, if you make some slight adjustments on brightness, etc but the picture afterwards provides an accurate representation of what you took a picture of then I think that should be OK, but if it doesn't then it wouldn't be allowed.
Thanks ecrane...kind of what I thought!
As far as rules and regulations. I've a pix that was taken a while back, but it has not been entered in prior contest. It has a date back in 2007. Will the picture qualify for this year?
Lily, the rules just say only photos that haven't been entered before, so yours is "new" as far as the contest goes.
Ecrane, thanks for clarifying what "obvious enhancements" might be. I'm still uncertain about macro. If it is true macro lens photos they are 1 x 1 size, right? But can't that be done with a tripod, say, and a telephoto lens? Or a good zoom close-up? So, is it close up or macro?
I'd say the macro category probably refers to close ups because otherwise the majority of DGers would be left out as porportionately but a few are equipped with SLR's.
That would make sense. I like close ups but hold back from posting on the macro thread because I don't have a macro lens. I've been reading a really good book about close up photography by Bryan Peterson.
In previous years I've contributed a few photo's ..but I cannot remember anymore what I've contributed..(I just have a few favorites which I like to look over and over again)..do I get a sign if I've contributed a photo earlier?
I don't know if you get a sign or not, but you can go at look at your earlier entries. On the home page under the green tabs, there is a tab for "extras." At the bottom, under Dave's attic, it has the contest tab. At first it will just show you the winners, but you can click on see all. I did that because I couldn't remember either!
My camera does not permit changing the lens, so a macro extension is completely out of the question. My camera does, however, have 2 macro settings that I use extensively. I can get as close as 1 inch to my subject and still manage to focus and produce a decent shot. My 2 entries for the contest's macro section have already been sent. I have until the end of the month to decide what 'll upload next. Participating is fun, winning would be nice but not a prerequisite.
Sylvain.
I'm a new member and would love to participate in this... I wasn't here last year so I have to ask... what are the categories? Thanks!
All the categories are in the link on the first post.
Upper left corner of your home screen you will see where to enter.
Looking forward to all the pictures
Actually it's location depends on where you have your preferences set, on my home page, mine is on the right side column, second box down.
Woops!!!
Sandy
Thanks Calf_Sue for the clarification on macro. I've been out of computer commission for about a week and I'm catching up on threads.

What category would snails go under? Wildlife? Insects other than butterflies?
Snails are an animal so I think Wildlife unless it is a pet; then it would be in Pets.
Thanks, Dahlia. They just didn't seem to fit easily into any category. In my mind, I lump them in with insects, but I know they're really in an entirely different category.
I would put snails under insects other than butterflies and moths even though they're not really an insect. What the heck are they anyway -- invertebrates? -- I'd put an octopus under wildlife though. Poor snails -- no respect.
Mollusks. I think mollusks all have a foot but don't quote me on that. Wait asking googleguy..... o wow very complicated group http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mollusca
I would put a snail under my shoe.
Edit for missing word

LOL Sue. I put them under Wildlife, though I can switch them to another category if there is a consensus that I should. They were actually really fascinating to watch! Took about 20 pictures, but only submitting what I think is the best one.
But not a banana slug I hope. Too pretty to squish IMPO.
I could afford to be fascinated--they weren't in MY garden. :)
LOL Sue. Then you have the problem of tracking snail guts into your house! Love that pic but then I do have snail garden art!
I think they are kind of pretty until they get out of control and then I Sluggo them to death!
Yeah, well, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder! ^_^
Pssst, Bookerc1, so sorry, but I doubt your snail will get my vote, no matter how... oh I just can't say it, 'pretty' is just not right when referring to a snail!! LOL!

This is fun. My camera is a little better schooled this year. LOL Good luck everybody.
That is UGLY - oh gosh, how awful.
Good picture,
Wow! Great slug!
OMG, that slug made me LOL, it is so ugly and yet so photogenic!
Brenda
I think a "just darn ugly" category is a must for next year!! LOL Great ugly slug Bea!
Sluggo is my friend. Snails and slugs should be in a pest category!
Escargo...........is manditory for a garden food category.
I am so an unprofessional photographer, and i just use a cheap digital camera. but i put in two photos of the ocean here in Mozambique, they don't look to bad. i hope i at least get one vote, grin.
