October blooms

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

Allison, I might recover. We got a light dusting last night, roofs are all white and snow on the grass.

Stormy, Thanks for posting the Longwood thread link, I would have missed it !

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

actually I am surprised it did... peeking at me though the window again!!!

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Allison, That plant is amazing. Are you going to leave it in that spot?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes I hope it re-seeds everywhere!!!

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

Allison, I wonder if you should try and collect some seeds. Just in case they don't make it on their own. I need to start some in the basement next spring, your is giving me the itch to grow them. LOL

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I would If I could reach the flower heads.. LOL

seriously I plan on collecting a few.. I only see one head that is dry enough on there.. and I don't want to pull the whole thing down until there are more.. I will send you some

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

Thanks Allison, I was not dropping a hint, but if you have enought to share. I know the seeds come from good stock!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes they did!!... oh I am sure there will be enough ... as long as the plant hangs on long enough

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

This is the first year for these Farphugiums in my garden. It's hard to see in this photo, but a bloom stalk has just appeared. I knew that they were supposed to bloom late in the season, but this is really pushing it.

Speaking of tall plants, These Helianthus Maximillian are now in full bloom. They are around 7' tall.

better late than never

A close up of some of the shorter blooms. This variety has fewer petals than a Heliopsis bloom.

Onewish, I hope that I get to see it and that a sudden frost doesn't kill it. Are they calling for snow in your area this week?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I ordered some maximillian seeds for next year.. they look great

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

no thank god... after tomorrow the temps are supposed to go up a bit

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

These Rio Negro lilies are all in bloom now. This bloom is at least 10" across. This is a shorter lily. I will have to move them next year to another spot as I didn't realize how short they are. Short and stupendous. I've never seen a short lily with blooms of this size.

Does anybody know what this is?

This will give you perspective on the height of those lilies. They are not much taller than those Mums.

This Skimmia is getting ready to bloom.

that short lily is pretty... white one an aster?

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

It sort of looks like an Aster. It might be a volunteer. I don't remember planting any over there. I thought it might be some kind of weed.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

The Galliardia may win the longest blooming award. They've out lasted the Asters and I'm sure will beat the Mums. It will be a run off between the Galliardias, Salvias and Stellas.

I 'spect the white one is a wild aster. I have a few wild white asters, they're full of bloom now.

Here's my Baby Maya--now in full bloom--and a few more buds coming...

Waiting for the bud on the tall "baby CG" to open. It is still several days away. Just want to see what it really is?

Stormy, that Skimmia is gorgeous! I might have to find a spot where it would be a little more protected in the gardens and test its "limits". And...after seeing your Gaillardia, I'm adding it to my list for the new "sunny garden" :) Which one is it?

This has been a weird year for blooms. Last year I was taking pictures of my Salvia 'Golden Delicious' blooming in September but it JUST finally started blooming last week! After last night's freeze, I don't think they're going to worthy of pictures this year :( I've been too busy to take any pictures of the gardens the past month but did take a few of the Salvias I saw at Green Spring Gardens in Alexandria when we were there a few weeks back. It's been awhile since I've planted any Salvias other than 'Golden Delicious' in the gardens but after seeing these you can bet I'll be looking for some to plant next year! This one is at the top of my list: Salvia 'Limelight'. It wasn't even in "bloom" but the contrast of the bright lime green of the spent flowers were beautiful regardless!

Used to have this one in the gardens, Salvia van houteii. How could I forget how gorgeous this plant is? Another one I'll be adding to the list :)

And this was a new one for me, Lantana trifolia 'Lavender Popcorn' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53835/ The flowers were pretty but what intrigued me the most were the triangular shaped purple seed heads they form!

Sally, Thanks. I'll have to look up wild asters.

RCN That Skimmia has done well for 3 years now. Last year in that long freeze, it got a little rough around the edges, but recovered nicely. It's mate is about 5 feet away against the house. Funny, last year there were no berries.

That Galliardia is the dwarf "Goblin" This is year 4 for them. I keep adding more. Some people dead head them. Others don't. They seem to keep blooming either way.

That Salvia VanHoutii is very nice. Is it perennial or reseeding for you? I've been looking for a nice red one.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, that curly spider is still one of my favorite house plants! I lost the original one, but my replacement is coming along nicely. I passed one of your babies on to a friend who had been admiring mine -- thanks!

I love the agastache & knockout rose combo near the top of the thread... I think I will plant some agastaches in the bare spot in front of my KO rose! Thanks!

I pretty much adore all of the perennial salvias. :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill--I can easily pull off one or two "babies" from mine ans send them to you--if you like. It is quite full.....

It wasn't all that long ago--3 years? All I had to start with were 2 or 3 of the babies off of yours. Look how fast it has grown! I do find that it is a lot more fragile in handling that the regular Spiders.....Something usually breaks off if i am not careful.

Here it is again for you to see......

Let me know if you want some---Gita

Stormy, I think your aster: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=7181899 is a "flat-topped white aster" or "parasol whitetop", Doellingeria umbellata. It's a great plant, they can get three feet high after a few years. I have some first-year seedlings from the native plants swap last year.

Here's a patch I saw in Maine last summer:

Thanks, Claypa. It now has a home in my garden!

Critter, There are two different Agastaches in front of the Knockouts. One is Black Adder and the other is Blue Fortune. They appear to be pretty similar. Black Adder may get to be the taller of the two.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Stormy - will now be looking for 'Goblin' next spring :) As for the Salvia vanhouteii, most sites only list it as a "tender perennial" and only hardy to Zone 9 :( The color doesn't show that well in my photo, it's really a rich burgundy and the flowers are huge. We always see the "Salvia Guru", Richard Dufresne, at some of the shows we attend in the spring. If you're looking for Salvias - he's probably got the best selection anywhere! This schedule is from 2008 but I'm pretty sure he attends most of these shows every year. http://www.eclectasy.com/gallery_of_salvias/calendr1.htm If you scroll down on the page, he lists the plants he sells. I'll be working on my list and will definitely be looking for his booth at Maymont next year :)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I can dig up a volunteer goblin for you in the spring RCN.... I usually have tons of babies around

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Wow, and it self sows, even better! If you have babies I'd love one. If my cuttings survive of the Plectranthus you wanted, we can trade :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, thanks, I'm pretty well set I think. I started with just a couple little spiders from a trade. You're right, the curly one is a little more delicate (slower growing, too, I think), but it's still a pretty tough plant. I love it.

I've lost some salvias and agastaches over the past couple of years, so I think I may concentrate on those for next spring. I'm glad to get some cultivar recommendations.. will look out for Black Adder, especially. :-)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I took cuttings of my plectranthus too... hopefully they will live!!!.. RCN I put you on my give away list for next spring

critter my AG desert sunrise is on it's 3rd year... grew them from cuttings as well.. if you want I will add that to your geraniums on the list

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Thank you :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Ooh, you have geranium for me, onewish? I'd love to try that agastache, thanks! I'll look for it on your swap list. :-)
