October blooms

love that calendula Jen

Jen, That rose is beautiful. I love those old fashioned roses. Hart has some really nice ones too. I planted a few baby ones this summer, so maybe I'll have some blooms next year.

Your coleus/mum combo is great too. I love those colors together. I used them this summer in a planter with purple oxalis and white geraniums.

I also saw Shihtzumom on the Perennials forum show her burgundy colored "Chocolate" Joe Pye Weed with the White foliaged Euphorbia "Snow on the Mountain" It was a great combo, same colors.

Well, I'll post a few more end of October blooms. Here's a Monkshood that I planted Mid Summer. It is over 3' tall and stands nice and straight, unstaked. This area only gets very late afternoon sun and it seems to do fine there.

Here's the Pineapple Sage. It's over 4' tall and has not required staking. I planted 5 of them along this fence. They are all in shade for a good part of the day, but still seem to bloom OK. I'll have to save some seeds from these for next year. These are the ones that Kubileya picked up for me in Delaware and brought to the swap. Thank You, Joy!

Here's an Oriental Poppy about to bloom. This is one that I grew from seed in the winter of 08. Hope it blooms before a freeze gets it.

Here's another set of Helianthus. I'm not sure which variety it is. These are not giant ones, more like 3' tall.

I forgot to look at which Hydrangea this is. It has had lovely blooms for over 2 months. It was put in new last fall.

These Heuchera Autumn Brides are in a part of the garden that doesn't get any sun until very late in the day. They have just started blooming and will probably still be in bloom through Thanksgiving.

Allison, did you root your Pineapple Sage cuttings in water?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

soil... I was proud of my 2' plant until I just saw yours... LOL... mine did not bloom

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Beautiful photos, Stormy!

I keep checking to see if there are seeds on my pineapple sage... not so far, but wow it has been a powerhouse of bloom this month! I'm going to try to remember to grab some cuttings before the next freeze warning.

I've been trying to check my garden for seeds that I could still collect (no big surprise that I didn't manage to do much of that earlier this year), but the birds have beaten me to most of them!

You ladies in zone 6b still have such beautiful blooms!! I am in 6a and there's nothing left but a few roses. Could this be because we are wide open between higher ground on either side and get really wind swept?

Took my pictures without glasses yesterday and didn't realize that some of them were actually blurred.

Does anybody know if Pineapple Sage is sterile also? PF has conflicting notes about it.

PF comments for Pineapple Sage also have some great suggestions for using the herb, including a poundcake.. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1913/

Allison, Thanks, maybe I'll try rooting some Pineapple Sage cuttings this weekend. My plants have been getting really big ever since I started adding Alfalfa to the planting soil and giving them some fish fertilizer and Bio-Tone in one of their earlier waterings. If I had to narrow it down to just one ingredient, I'd choose the Alfalfa. All of the others, I was using last year, including Kelp. It's the Alfalfa that really has made the difference. It's also a very inexpensive ingredient compared to all of the others. Your's might still bloom. Do you have buds? Mine just started blooming.

Roses, your yellow Rose is just beautiful. Face it, you're just far enough west of here to make it a good bit colder and yes, the elevation and wind does make a difference. My sister lives up in Hatfield. Even though she's 30 minutes closer to the Ocean, she's on a higher elevation and among open fields with no mature trees. It is very windy and much cooler there. I always notice that even though her lot is all in brilliant sun, her plants bloom later than mine.

Critter, wanting to try out Lady's Pineapple Sage Pound Cake recipe is one of the reasons that I started growing it! I love the idea of putting both the leaves and the blooms in the cake.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

no buds.. I cut them back some to bring them in and took cuttings for backups

Took some photos yesterday and surprised with all the blooms I saw in the gardens! Julia Childs last bloom for the season...

And this poor pathetic Rose, Lavender something?, can't remember the name right now. Whenever I think I'm finally just going to yank it, it sends out another bloom! I love the color but it's been in the gardens for three years and there's only one healthy shoot on it, the rest of it dies back every summer. And look at all those weeds :(

Daphne 'Summer Ice' has been blooming since May and is still blooming!

Julia Childs is very pretty

It "is" pretty but just not thriving :( I don't know why but Roses just don't like me!

A few last blooms of the Clematis on either side of the arbor. These are the ones that were so disappointing...both were supposed to be double blooming pink!

I don't have luck with roses either, I have killed so many, I just gave up. I do have one Peace Rose that has hung on for many years.
It is raining today so I guess I'll stay in on my day off. : (

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

my double blue clem turned out not be a a double too

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Frustrating isn't it? I almost thought about yanking them it made me so mad :( At the very least they could have both been the same Clematis instead of two different ones! I tried to get replacements but the company wasn't selling Clematis any longer - I wonder why??? They probably had all of them mislabeled :(

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the blue light clem I bought ... after I bought it I found out it's hit or miss if it's a double or single.. it still still very pretty... but a single

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

This is my first year with Clematis, but I found that on one that was supposed to be a double, only 1 out of 5 blooms turned out to be double.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

It's been my experience that the clematis doesn't really do its thing until about the third year. I planted them for the first time three years ago and only the three year old plants looked like anything this year. The newer ones had a bloom or two.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Well, maybe I'll be the one to post the last of the October blooms. Here's another bloom off of DL Coral Masterpiece.

and the other weird thing...this dahlia stalk broke off in the wind. I hadn't had a chance to clean it off the deck for various reasons...How in the world is it blooming???? I mean, really, look how dead the leaves and stalk are!

Yeah, Jen, There were a couple on mine when I ripped them out. The Euphorbias are starting to stand out now.

Jen, To quote Jeff Goldblum, "Life finds a way". When I cut back the mums today, there were all new blooms starting at the bottoms. So I did not cut them down all together.
