Morning Glories 2009 #16

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1038131/

We are in the middle of September now and the season is winding down for many gardeners. Here's hoping that we all get lots of seeds from all of our beautiful vines before the first frost approaches!

When I first saw the photo posted by Seedsower in the PlantFiles, I was blown away by this cultivar. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/179067/ The blooms are large 5 to 6". The seed packet from Fukukaen Co., in Japan (purchased from Onalee's) shows a blue flower, but all of the blooms on my vine have been lavender color with splashes and ripples of white. Just stunning!

Well, today ... much to my absolute delight ... look what the blooms are becoming!!! Whoo hoo! This cultivar is outstanding!!! I bet the Japanese were just as excited as I am this morning when they first set eyes on this kind of bloom!

Another of my starts has bloomed. These poor vines are growing in a small styrofoam cups. I will be transplanting all of them into bigger pots today so they can stretch their little roots and have fresh fertile soil to feed from! :-)

This is Fuji Shibori from Antoinette. She has shared some really nice cultivars and crosses with me over the past few years and I am never disappointed! This is one of my favorite "freckled" cultivars because the bloom is usually quite large and the spots are dark purple and very showy! :-)

I have two NOID vines growing from Dany. This one has larger blooms that seem to drape down like an elegant ballroom gown. Very attractive. The leaves are a solid light green. I know this cultivar has a name, but it is not listed in PlantFiles and I can't seem to find a Japanese website that lists names. So ...

Here is the other NOID white also from a JMG mix that Dany sent me. This vine has the blocked leaves. The blooms are also white but smaller. Like 4 - 4/12 inches in diameter. No pollen from this one so far. The blooms are strong and hold their shape very nicely. The leaves are what make this vine so special! :-)

Here is a photo of one of the larger blocked leaves. Very cool to see the color-block of dark green and light green. Some leaves are solid, too. Some are solid light green and some are solid dark green. :-)

My F1 Ishidatami is producing Fall colors on the older leaves. Rather pretty actually. I don't remember seeing this the first year I grew this cultivar. The vine is producing some solid blooms as well as the feathered (split petal) blooms.

Blue-Purple Shibori Henka blooms reaching for the sky. When this photo was taken this morning the sky was so blue, now the clouds have moved in and we have been getting rain showers off and on. The rain is sure welcome, but the humidity kept fogging up my camera lens. :-)

Mauve Splash (Blizzard) showing a small flush of blooms. :-)

I found this bloom near the bottom of the vine. This is a pretty striped Mauve Splash bloom. These blooms are about 4 inches.

Last bloom photo is of Sazanami. These bloom look more like what the photo on the original seed packet looked like ... except the blooms on the seed packet were blue not lavender. LOL!

Here is a photo of the seed packet. Interesting, huh?

I hope that those of you that have been lurking come post some photos of your blooms, too! I usually post photos on the weekends because I just don't have the time in the mornings during the weekday to take photos and still get to work on time! That is the one big drawback to growing Morning Glories ... the blooms only last a few hours in the early mornings. By the time I get home from work ... they are all wilted. :-(

Jackie - Have you taken any more photos of the Lady Laura? That seemed to have an interesting color to it.

Helena - Thanks for the Mauve Splash seeds. Very pretty blooms! :-)

Pretoria, South Africa

Oh Becky, your flowers are absolutely beautiful. As always....

Elsa

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks, Elsa! I hope that as you are going into summer, that you have much success with your MGs as well! :-) I hope you will share some photos as you get blooms. We will need our MG fix over our winter months! ;-)

Pretoria, South Africa

LOL! Will post as soon as I have something to share.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, the first bloom is just incredible. My fave pic so far.
The Sazanami is a beauty too. I will be begging for sds of
both of those and Helenas' Mauve Splash, an impressive
bloom. I hope you can get seeds as your weather should start
cooling down soon.
No blooms lately on Lady Laura, it's in the small pot.
Definitely a Choc/Rose Silk look alike.

Fuji no Beni, winding down. I've enjoyed these gorgeous
blooms. Hoping for lots of seeds

Oooh! I love those Fuji no Beni blooms! How pretty they look! I need to grow them next Spring, too! :-) They are such a cheerful looking bloom. They always look like they are smiling and celebrating! Very festive! :-)

The first photo in this thread is from my Sazanami vine. All those different blooms are on the same single vine! Isn't that amazing? It is like the Diluted Fuji no Muraski ... starts out with the typical blooms and then the future blooms evolve into something really amazing! That's my kinda vine! :-) I just love surprises from these JMGs! The Mauve Splash is making some neat blooms, too!

Such fun! :-) :-)

I had to laugh ... I went to Onalees to check a JMG name and saw that her Sazanami #2 are almost sold out. I don't remember how many packets she had for sale last night, but looks like they won't be available much longer. So ... how many of those here decided to pick a packet for yourself? I keep wondering if any of my seeds will produce blue Sazanami like the photo on the Japanese packet ...

I am wondering if the large white ruffly NOID bloom/vine I have might be Heian No Yuki: http://www.onalee.com/catalog.php/onaleeisrael/dt66284/pd1741787/Heian_No_Yuki_Snow_of_the_Heian_Era_Japanese_Morning_Glory_Seeds_Ipomoea_Nil

I wish I could see a photo of the leaves or find a Japanese website with the names on it ...

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I agree with DIRTYGIRL71 - NOT so-so, Helena! All of them are beautiful!

Tell me, is this one: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7085006 Dracula? It looks kinda like it but with more blue on the bloom. Very nice! :-)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Well I assumed it was Drac,so pretty. All are lovely Helena, but I'm
very partial to Count Drac.
Becky I had no idea that first bloom was also Sazanami. Oh
pul-leeze save me some seeds.lol

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - I hope and pray that my Sazanami produces some seeds! You will definitely get some if it does! :-) I heard Onalee's Sazanami #2 was sold out now! LOL! I guess she got some business from my posts and photos! LOL! I am just glad that someone here in the USA sells the Japanese seed packets. I don't know any other source in the US that does. They are rather pricey though through her. Not something that I can easily afford. :-( I wonder what they sell for in Japan. I bet they are cheap. ;-)

Tokyo, Japan(Zone 10a)

I can anwer that one, 180 yen for about 6 seeds. You'll need to do your own conversion into USD.

Gautier, MS

Thanks everyone. Yes Becky, that is Dracula with the nices bloom so far.

So glad to see Elsa and Dany posting.

Still good things to come. My first bloom on Sazanami #2 from Onalee. It's still a small bloom but I think it will get better.

Hi Helena,

I just love the coloring of this flower. (http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7087085) Hope you get lots of seeds... :-)

Elsa

Gautier, MS

Thanks Pensecolagarden and Elsa. The lavender color on that bloom is caused by the humidity here, most of the time it disappears by mid morning. I tried getting another picture but had trouble focusing with my camera.
It does seem to have pollen so I'm hoping for lots of seeds too.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Helena - You Sazanami looks like the true blue color. How cool!!! Glad to hear you have pollen too! We have the humidity here too, but I think the heat is doing a number on my vines and seed production. Looking good! Just curious ... where did Hannah come from? I haven't heard of that one before.

Hey Jon! Good to see you back! Thanks for the Japanese seed prices. The Japanese packet I got had quite a few seeds in it, so maybe the price is right. I am just happy to be able to get them here in the US. Getting Japanese seed packets is a rarity here. When you get the website for the new JMGs offered by the Japanese Seed Companies, could you please dmail me the link. Thanks! :-)

Thanks for the conversion in US $'s Dirtygirl! ;-)

Dany - Thanks! And thanks for posting the Japanese price list too. :-)

I am at school on my break. We just came in from recession and I felt terrible. I think I got a little dehydrated. It is soooo hot right now! I so need to see some cool weather blow my way! I can't wait until the temps drop into the low 80's - high 70's. It is awful here right now. Ugh ...

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Gorgeous blooms Helena. Love the Sazanami.

Jamie Lynn, thanks Emma

shoot..if pollen and humidity is all that's needed... I should see something fabulous in my garden soon, huh! ~LOL~ humidity by the buckets here!

Tokyo, Japan(Zone 10a)

I think I've got buds on my "pearly gates" If so there are hundreds!

Jon, I think so too. Late blooming just like my Wedding Bells,
both tri-colors. I can't remember if my Heavenly Blue bloomed this
late for me.
