Gypsies on Vacation!

Hey where is my photo; took ten minutes to download!

Once again: Dwarf Red.

Hey Trina, the capsules will turn brown and will crack open when they are ripe. Collect then as soon as that happens; should be within a couple of weeks.

This is 'King Kamehameha'. The red markings get darker if the plant is in more direct sunlight.

is it my imagination or are the leaves slightly textured under the dew?

your just torturing me with plants I can't have! But I love it...everybody needs a fantasy mine just happens to be about plants (and stiletto heels but that's another story)
I like that last one how tall do these usually get?

are these the seed pods for my oleander and is the same with them, wait until they turn brown and crack?

Variegated Green Ti.

I think with Oleander you need to pay close attention to when the pod begins to turn yellowish-brown to pick it. If the pod becomes completely brown, I think it will split up and peel backwards, releasing the seeds.

This is Dwarf Variegated Green Ti.

oh I like that one too!

Ok so I will pay close attention...I want the seeds...but the Plant Files says its toxic so I want to make sure my little chupacabra doesn't get ahold of any

I planted some varigated vinca around the bottom...I thought it looked nice anyway

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

I have one of those. I don't know what it is, though.

Keaau, HI

Yes it is Persian Shield, Strobilanthes dyerianus.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

it was one of those gift plants that was half dead...wasn't sure it was going to live...seems to have recovered nicely though

and a different sweet potato vine

woohoo I remembered the name without a tag

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Remember how much those Blackie Sweet Potato Vines were annoying me? I cut all 4 plants back to 2 inches. I really didn't think they would grow leaves again. But that darn thing is so hardy that you would never know that I had cut it off. I would have done it much sooner had I known!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Trina, did you just cut some off of your sweet potato vines from outside and growing them as an indoor plants.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I haven't cut any from the outside yet...the ones I have were given in that "gift" from my friend and it turns out I have a few different varieties

This one though I am going to take cuttings from and try to over winter it in the house

Trina, OR you could dig up the root and put it away until spring! I have the rest of the info if you want it.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

ok I need to explain something, it hasn't happened with you guys but it has in other forums, but I am sure eventually someone is going to ask so here it is

How can I grow so many plants in one house and outdoor climbers as well...it's simple

the front of my house faces East...due east in fact, and its all glass..there are 9 picture windows across the front they measure 4 1/2' by 8 1/2'

the rooms it covers is our Master bedroom, where I am growing the jasminum polyanthum, Oleander, and various coleus and succulents

then there is a hallway where the front entrance use to be that is strictly used for plants, at one end (which would be the wall to the closet in the MB) I have one passionflower and at the other end which opens to the dining room is the other passionflower.

from the plant hallway it also opens to the living room where a pair of french doors used to be....so there are now hanging plants in the doorway, morning glories, moon flowers, dichondra, and several other trailing plants, as well as some massive spider plants, some aztec cherry verbena, some citrus trees, 2 bananas (these could be planted outside once they are substantially taller than our chow/huskey dog) then in the dinning room I also have plants
and the dinning room is completely open to the kitchen which also has 2 huge windows that get sun all day from sun up to about sundown.

then there is the upstairs where the kids rooms are... all but one room has east facing windows....and they all have plants in them...the kids each picked out there own to take up there

one sons room has these same huge windows on 3 sides of his room so he has a lot in his room (and for the first time most of them are ones he started from seed or got and has nursed back to health with a little guidance)

then there is the upstairs lounge area which has vaulted ceilings its 16' tall in the center (hubby is putting a loft in too which those windows also face east...the lounge has windows on all sides.

off the upstairs we have a large deck (remember I fell off of it) that is currently being turned into a small year round greenhouse. and he just set the foundation for the one downstairs which runs the entire length of the house, with I spiral staircase leading down into it from the upper deck. so it will be as tall as the house....

Next question why do I grow so many in the house that could be grown outside..

Because I happen to be one of the few oddballs on this planet that after about 20 minutes out in full sun I break out into an itchy nasty red rash...so I do almost everything in the house or do my gardening chores when the shade covers the gardens so i can be outside...it sucks but its better than the rash

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

oh cool venice...sorry that last post was so long but someone in another forum kinda irked me a bit so I just wanted to be clear about why I grow things inside that are normally outside plants

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Trina this is what your ROS seeds will look like. I cut mine off before they are ready otherwise I have a bazillion of these little suckers come up everywhere

Sounds like you need to think in terms of a shade garden for the back yard.....pergolas and arbors to give you a hang out place and still have grass for the dog.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

It never crossed my mind to ask!!!

Do people think you are like a cat hoarder with one hundred out-of-hand cats? Or one of those complusive hoarders of everything, can't throw anything away, and have a trashed house that you can't even walk through? LOL

I will read your long list of plants later!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

And you could grow your plants on your roof if you wanted! (There are none up there, right?) lol Who cares where you grow them!

Hey did you want to know how to dig up and store those sweet potato vine roots?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

yeah sorry I had to run and get the boys from cross country practice....

Hey what is this and can it grow from cuttings?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Trina, here are the instructions I have.

To save your vine, harvest the sweet potato by digging the actual potato from the ground and remove the entire 'vine' from the potato.
Rinse the potato off well and allow to air dry for several days before storing in sawdust, newspaper in a cool and dark place for the winter.
Most likely, the potato will start to sprout again over the winter's storage.
In the spring, replant the entire potato if you choose or cut the potato into section where each section has a 'sprout' and let air dry till scabbed over. Once the potato has scabbed you can plant each individual piece to propagate new vines.

I guess it would help if I had added the picture huh? here's the first picture of the flowery part, but I kinda knocked most of them off trying to get them untangled

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

so just like a regular potato then cool...very easy!

and here's the second pic of the leaves (well one leaf anyway)

Thumbnail by trinawitch
Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Trina, I don't know if that is like a regular potato because I have never grown potatoes! lol

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

lol venice...I have and that's pretty much how you grow them too

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

where did everybody go?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I just wrote a long message and it disappeared!!!! I will try again.

Saying Hello to everyone. It's almost time for a new thread. Someone start one;-)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Trina, it is your fault!!!

I went into Lowe's to see if they had some six-packs or others for growing seeds. I was 8' from the door and I spotted a sale rack. I bought 2 plants, indoor plants! So congratulations!! I am now under your spell! I really don't need them, especially indoor plants, but I am really getting tired of looking at only vines. I will take photos tomorrow and maybe Dave will ID them for me. But you probably can since you have become the tropical plant expert!

Hope everyone is having a good evening!

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I swear I cast no spells in anyones direction! It wasn't me! LOL

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

per Rachel's instructions new thread started

Then your plants did it! They called to these 2 plants -- take me, take me!!
