Gypsies on Vacation!

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Moon, can't see you with a handful of pretties in pots. Your knowledge is too advanced and you would go crazy if you didn't have a smoregisboard of pretties. When the weeds get bigger than you then only one thing to do, save the seeds and cuttings, pull out the roundup and start over. Thats my story and I'm stickin to it lol

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Good morning all my gypsi friends, sounds like a busy weekend for all. Trina glad your mom was able to log on now we know where you get your spunk. JJ that grandson is adorable, Lynnie I feel your pain lol Kids had a good time tho and thats what it is all about. Dave your pics are remarkable and the rocks were beautiful bring me a load for a rock garden will ya lol Venice I can see your head expanding with all the plant knowledge your gathering.Smilemom and Rachael a big wave to you. Going back to knitting class today, dang can barely remember the two stitches I've learned so far, don't know about this deal Wish me luck lol Everybody have a great day. It has rained here for a week "Thanks Moon", but think of the pretty flowers we are gonna see next spring because of it. Hugs

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Morning all!

Flowers, that is exactly what I would do and have done before! Even when I thought my soil was sterile one year, it is surprising how many weeds and grass popped up!

Moon, let us know how your boat ride goes!!!

Those tiny black bugs are multiplying and are on some petunias clear on the other side. Really, they are like very little gnats. I can see their little wings but I don't see any flying. I was trying to see if I could find any seed pods on the petunias and I got those little bugs all over my fingers! I just don't want my avocado trees to get contaminated now that they are happy in their larger pots.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Taking a mosquito break...grin. Everybody give a hard thought for Atlanta....gotta move the rain before Atlanta area washes away....2 inches an hour in an area that the ground is already saturated....ruined crops and lost gardens...oh my.

Venice, the gnats are attracted by the compost pile and since it is so close to the garden, they settle on the plants also.
I would suggest getting one of the mid sized trash cans....20 gal I think, cut off the bottom of it, sink it a couple inches into the ground and keep the lid on it. Compost will cook just fine and you can leave the lid off during a rain to keep moisture level up. Your gnat problem will be solved, worms can come and go and it will break down faster with the extra heat. Anytime you have compost, you have bugs....that close to the house you wind up with bugs in the house...gnats and fruit flies get into the house if we forget to carry the kitchen bin out, and the compost bins are 100 ft or more from the house....bugs like rotting vegetable matter....grin

Hey Karen. You won't forget what you learned...grin. So glad the plants got to ya okay. I love where ya planted them....grin. I am absolutely gonna dig and roundup a couple beds...if it ever stops raining long enough for roundup to work...lol The last two years have been strange around here, people places and things creating distractions and problems and issues and unfortunately the garden has suffered the most....getting back on track can take time....just got to muster the determination to win....as Larry the cable guy says....just got to get'er done....grin

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Moon love the compost idea, may try that one myself. Ok gone to knit, purl one knit two or was that knit two purl one sheezzzz lol Come on over yall I'll teach ya my way of planting he he he.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Have fun Flowers....knit one purl two....lol

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Kassy showed me how to get the dianthus seeds.....she just failed to mention that's an awful lot of work for so few seeds!

Yes My mom is very spunky....but if you ask her she'll say I act like my dad...and then we giggle

knowledge is power...or a migraine waiting to happen...it just all depends on how you look at it

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

sometimes it's both, Trina! I always threaten to leave work and get a job at McDonald's pushing the button on the fry machine. (I'm the go-to person here)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Trina, both you and your mother have such strength together and wonderful love for one another. Together you are an amazing pair!

Moon, sorry that you have had so many distractions, problems, and issues that came up in the past two years. Even though you have wanted to have more time in your garden, it looks pretty great to me. Well, except for your flourishing critter ditch!! I know, that rain you are having makes those weeds go crazy!

I am trying to figure out where I can do an enclosed compost. Nothing will fit back in that little corner because of its strange shape. And I don't want to sit anything on the patio. I have a little nook where I put my tools, soil, etc. I have a 31 gallon storage bin with lid. I cut a hole in one and put a soft rug in it for Kitty. I have another one that I could use for compost. I don't know why but the concrete there is always cool even in the hottest of summer. If I put the compost bin there, it is only about 6 feet from where I open the sliding doors. If I put it there, would bugs come out when I open the lid and put stuff in? I would have to dig everything up in that corner and put it in the bin.

Moon, what do you think?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

we've been through a lot together...I know I'm very lucky because she's not just my mom, she's also my best friend

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Carol, can ya take a picture of the areas you have? Do that, and I will figure out something that will work for ya.

Morning Trina...oops, Afternoon Trina....grin

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

JJ, are you still around? Or are you trying to corral that GS! Just wanted to tell you that on 4 of your daylilies there are tiny little green things coming up. They are only about 1/4" but one has even 3 of them. That makes me very happy! I was so afraid that when I saw those stubby little stems looking dead, that they were a gonner. Obviously, I have never planted just a root like that. I am sure the rain from yesterday helped. And rain all this next week, should give them a good start.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

hey moon I finally figured out where and how to put a compost bin outside....read where you posted about the trash can with the lid...think one with a lock on the lid will keep the dog out?

And good afternoon to you ...is it mon cheri'?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

It is raining and thundering outside or else I would take some photos. Later perhaps.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

venice you got rain? no fair...I need rain....hhhmmm I'll try a Rain Dance

see if Happy Dance makes me happy then Rain Dance should make rain RIGHT?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

The sun it out now! I looked on the radar and it looks like you will get some rain tomorrow. See, your rain dance is helping!!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, this is where I was putting my compost.

This is where I think I may put the compost in the left bin. It is usually tidier than this! See the Kitty house? She likes to sleep there more when it it hot outside.

the chupacabra is finally asleep! unfortunately now so are my legs!

Good morning everyone! Aloha kakahiaka!

Here is the morning Sun over the garden.

I should really fix my tools to I can hang them. I just have a very old wobbly hand drill. But I can put a hole in the wood handles, then make a hanger from wire, put a hole in the fence, and screw in some hooks I already have. It is really hard to get anything into that fence. So maybe I will have to work on that.

I have to get going because need to pick up some seed trays I found through recycle.com

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Imagine waking up to that!!! Ahhh!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Carol, you have more than enough room to tuck a garbage can in between the fence and the a/c unit. A large 40 gal can only takes up a 2ftx2ft area. If you put it on the ground, it works better and is less mess. A good bin has to have holes to allow for drainage. do you want it draining on your concrete patio? Tucked back against wall and fence will not interfere with your a/c.

Yes ma'am, mon cheri is correct. A locking lid should work, and you can always add a bungi cord for added security.

A few minutes later!

good...my cajun french is not so good...shoulda listened more as my grandfather talked may he be at rest now...

Dave beautiful pictures as always!

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

hey is the plant on the left a red sister ti?

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Carol. The dollar store has these loops on a hanger that you use for mops and brooms. They are 2 hooks for a buck, and come with the little nails to hang them. I use them in the greenhouse, storage shed and workroom.

glad to see I'm not the only one who shops at the dollar store!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Aloha kakahaika, Dave. I love sunrise...it holds such promise. Thanks for sharing...that means I get two sunrises today, grin

Mon cheri is Parisian also, Trina.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Nope, the dollar store is on my regular shopping route....why pay more when there's Dollar Store? Gee, oughta hire me to write their advertising....lol

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

yes i know but actually french people are generally rude unless your away from the big cities

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I have no great love for the Urban French, either. Rude, brusque, and elitist. Nothing like the delightful folk of the rural areas.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, you made me a believer! I cut out a 2' circle from newspaper. And you are right! It fits. I am going so see if I can get one of freecycle.com. I don't like buying anything unless I really have to. About those hangers. Seems like a good idea but they are stick on. But this fence is very rough, nearly as bad as the brick. I will have to think on that.

Gotta go!

Keaau, HI

Hey Trina, I never have kept track of any cultivars. They pop up regularly in gardens where people grow a lot of them.
Most folks here just call those Red Ti.

Chances are that the variety you have came from a person whose sister gave them a Red Ti plant, hence "red sister ti".

I will try to locate a few specific Ti varieties for you today.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Carol, they come with nails also so you can permanently install them.

Heading back outside...catch you folks later...Moon

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I would greatly appreciate that Dave...I am drawn to ones with lots of colorful foliage...or strange leaves...I think that's why I've been drawn to crotons and coleus lately

Keaau, HI

This is a dwarf known as 'Cameroon',
