YAKKETY YAK....Gypsies talk back....and forth

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

I'm in a lazy mood today, its raining here and have lots to do but just don't want to do it.

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

My DH says we're all allowed lazy days every now & then. It's good for the soul.

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

yes, may get started here in a bit just in no hurry lol Hope you are doing well.

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm doing well, thank you. I googled an article for my coworker on the smoke bush topic. I'm working now, but am taking off after lunch. My husband sealed the driveway yesterday, I'm looking forward to putting the pots back.

I said "just leave it, dear. I'll put them back as I play with them", when in reality I was thinking "DON'T TOUCH THEM!!!" It's going to be iffy, I haven't seen them in 2 days.

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

let me know what you find out, and don't blame you dh's don't take our plants as serious as we do . Glad you have the afternoon off hope its pretty your way and you can enjoy the short lived freedom lol

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

morning everybody

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Hey Mrs. Trina, how are you today?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

still stuffy but moving....it doesn't sound like I'm hearing underwater anymore

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Whooo-hoooo! Lovely to see you again my friends. Hope everyone has a beautiful sunny day....weather guy says no rain until this afternoon, so been outside since I got the kid off to school. Word of advice, don't try pruning back stuff until the sun is fully up...nearly cut the tail off a sleeping king snake. He would have been too unhappy with me. As it was he just gave a dirty look and took his business elsewhere....grin

All 5 hibbies are in my friend's nursery, and they are all from the Dupont Cajun Hi. series. The flowers in the opening are a branch from one of my Crapemyrtles.

Dave, we can always count on you to look out for us and keep us up to date and well informed....thanks so much.

Seed/Judy, good to see you here. The Gypsies needed a good form of transportation, and a Harley is hard to beat....grin. Plus you fit right in as each of us has a bit of adventure in our heart....

I am not even gonna try for individual welcomes, cuz I know I will miss someone and I am too happy to see you all.

Cat, glad you found us. I fixed the link...grin thanks JJs for giving directions.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Unhappy with Moon..nah he would have considered himself blessed and moved a little faster.....hehehe

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

nothing like snipping at a king snake in the early morn moon lol Thats better than a strong cup of coffee to get ya going. l Hibis are beautiful, glad new versions are being introduced as I have the boreing ones just saw a red one yesterday at a local nursery Cool.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Julie....to prune or not to prune....5000 answers either way. You can coppice a smoke bush, which means taking a bush way back to correct problems, or just trim out any dead wood, or just snip off any wayward growth. Smoke bush/tree can be pruned in one of two ways
1) Remove broken , crossing shoots or wayward growth to maintain a healthy growth framework. Do this late winter or early spring.

2) For spectacular foliage, in the early spring, cut back stems to within 2 or 3 buds from the base of the plant,(for suckering species) or to the permanent growth framework . Feed or apply well rotted manure/compost to compensate for loss of vigorous wood

In most cases, you prune them to suit the look you are going for....tree style, cross growth and dead wood and wayward growth. Bush style, a few inches (2 or 3 buds) above the ground

Hope this helps some

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

well unless one sneaked in here when I wasn't Lookin (which is entirely the possible the last few days) I don't have any hibiscus either, but that's not to say that the spider plants haven't had a few "lady friends" over the last few nights Mr. Ficus' birthday, I sleep pretty soundly on that Nyquil, and my hubby wouldn't have noticed a few "loose" plants roaming about the house

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

ok, I've procrasted long enough, tomatoes are not gonna can themselves Holler at yall later. Have a Great Day.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

bye bye Flowers

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I realize the benefits of having the snakes in the yard, but we have a few that are nasty customers and I am a real clucker when it comes to them. Had to get my neighbor out one day cuz a REALLY big water moccasin decided to curl up in a pot right outside the door....after he dispatched it, showed me the carcass and it was nearly 5 ft long....pui-yii, I clucked a lot yea cher....

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

I would never go out again without a shot gun after that one moon lol bye yall

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

when we lived in Missouri I woke up with copperheads under my bed....let me tell you they smell like fresh cut cucumbers...that smell makes me puke to this day, and that was nearly 20 years ago now

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Flowers if I send ya my tomatoes will ya make me some tomato sauce??

Moon I'm afraid I would never go outside again. I was at a house once and a litlle bull snake was on my car hood and I wouldn't get in the car. Can't imagine a king or moccasin.

Dh brought home a couple big buckets of kelp he found cleaning up someones old shed.
What do you do with it???

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I have a garden staff.....a stick, not a group of people, lol, that I keep with me. We have a variety of snakes around here and I am a let sleeping snakes lie sorta gal...but, don't scare me....I will whack you...grin

We have a small light brown and cream colored snake that is called an earthworm snake as that is what it eats. My sons both loved to play with them, as they only barely reach a foot long and have small mouths and are not aggressive....imagine my surprise when I stuck my hand in the pocket of a pair of shorts I was getting ready to launder and pulled out a "Frankie" as my kids called them......my oldest son heard me holler and hid in the fig tree cuz he knew what I found.....grin

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

alright still light headed gonna lay back down

oh and I did finally figure out what gave me the allergic reaction part of my symptoms, It was the zinnia seeds! going through all those dried heads for the seeds...duh

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

I won't complain about rocks in the pockets anymore!!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Kelp has a lot of uses..here is one.

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

Sort of reminds me when none of the girls in the Peanuts cartoon would put their hands in their baseball gloves in the spring. They thought there would be spiders in them. So Charlie Brown did and found a spider in one. Charles Schultz drew him kind of upside-down and sprawling.

I thought of that last week when one was in my gardening glove.

Something to be said for living in the city. I don't have to worry 'bout no snakes in my beds!

Thanks for the info Moon. I may just copy & paste your suggestions for my coworker. Well, I'm gonna go get my plants back in shape. Talk about Wilty!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

JJs, that kid was not afraid of much, and had a passion for critters. He kept a ladybug colony in his closet, tried to keep sow beetles(rolly-poly) in a match box inside his pillow case....one climbed into his ear...Hiya Doc...grin. He had a box of toads under his bed, attached a lizard to his earlobe as a joke (2 hours and a half frozen lizard later....grin) carried snakes in his pockets, and brought home every stray animal you can imagine....once had a couple baby oppossums in his bottom drawer....

That's my kid....surprised he made it to adulthood....lol

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Trina and Rie,

My doctor told me to take Mucinex the last time I had a cold. It is wonderful if you have never tried it. All I had was a sore throat and by the time I bought that stuff, my nose was running etc. It doesn't leave you groogy or too dried out as some.

Mucinex, highly recommended!!!

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

Venice! Second that motion. I forgot about Mucinex. It does all she said.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

You are welcome Smiley J.....hope it helps your co-worker. Have fun putting stuff back....grin

Go ahead and comlain JJs, won't do much good, but you might feel better...grin

Trina, don't take the Nyquil for too long, can cause some loss of balance and light headedness if you are trying to be up and about....check out the Dayquil...still works but not as many side effects.

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks moon.
Maybe I'll throw some in the new flowerbed.

Well I better get back outside and finish digging. ( Don't like that part of gardening)
I like to play in the dirt but I want it to be all nice and ready for planting.

Enjoy your sunshine!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, what a kid!!!!!
Love the hibiscus. That was a very pretty bush of yours. I forget what you said it was.

Flowers, good luck with the canning of your tomatoes.

Dave, good protective tree. Thanks for mushroom info. I don't think anyone here is going to take any chances with any of those!

JJ, good luck in getting all your new plants in. So glad you didn't eat those mushrooms, just in case. You never know, except Dave!!

I should be doing some seed sorting and cleaning. Today is my 4th day of a headache but I think it is just allergies. They said it is really bad here now.

Jim, so so sorry about your cousin. I can't believe anyone would be so irresponsible to leave him there after hurting him. Only good thoughts going his way. You take care of yourself also!

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Moon I'm not sure that boy wouldn't have been moved to the garage. :)

I'm surprised you made it until he reached adulthood. lol

Everyone enjoy the day. Hope its as nice where you are as it is here.

Had to laugh at my neighbor who is up here from Florida. I got shorts and t-shirt on sweating and she comes out of the house in jeans, shirt and a sweatshirt. Must be snowing over there. LOL

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

talking about snakes, We got one under the floor of the patrol boat at work, The big tough guys wouldn't go on patrol of the lake on count of it. I took off with a big stick waiting for it to pop its head up. Job had to be done lol

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Ok
Back to work here.

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

ok, back to the kitchen, JJ bring them maters on the more the merrier. Trina hope you get better soon. Thinking secondary infection from cold Take care may need antibiotics. Venice keep em straight and moon you may want to take up Tai Kwan Doe for the snake adventures lol cyall

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Everybody have a great day...off to the bookstore....English class...To Kill A Mocking Bird....now if I can convince him it is worth reading even if it doesn't have avatars and shoot'em ups....grin

Thanks all, catch ya later...Moon (walking softly and carrying a BIG stick) grin

seedtosser, that cabin is still to the south of me.......Glad you figured out where I'm at, well at least until friday, then I'm headed north!

Did I see mushroom talk???
I fried up and froze some of the puffball mushrooms for my son, and he said they are very good.

Dave, you don't need the salt, honest ;-)

Need to download some pictures now that I need an ID on.

Hey Kassy, is there a difference of flavor in the large and small puffballs? I still find them a little creepy. I definitely would have to see someone eat one before I could even taste one.

Delhi, LA

Don't like snakes either, Moon. came out the house yesterday, headed for a funeral. When I rounded the car I almost stepped right in the middle of a ground rattler. Like to have soiled my linen.
