Tropical Garden #51

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

This is either Irma Bryan or Hilo Beauty, didn't look at tag. Both have red flowers, which I favor. This plumie has been blooming forever.

This poor little plumie was planted 3-4 yrs ago and it was about 3 ft tall when planted inground. I was determined this plumie was going to survive winter w/ no protection. It dies to the ground every yr but it comes back. It has never bloomed, I guess b/c it has to start from scratch every season.

ardesia, are you around? look at this beauty. I was delighted that my camera caught the true color of this "itty bitty". The leaves are the size of a regular hibbie, but the blooms are smallish at 2.5 - 3".

althea Morning Star, a dbl. Reminds me of those crepe paper flowers you sometimes see hanging at some Mexican restaurants. I'm growing mine as a tree.

vossner, I love that var. syngonium it is beautiful.
At a garden show I bought a huge ee bulb don't know the name but it must of weighed 10lbs or more and I love that plant. It has the leaves like the pic of A. Borneo Giant and is huge, I overwinter it every year so it doesn't have to start over. Made the mistake of sticking a canna in the pot with it and now this fall I need to tip the huge pot and try to untangle it.......wish I hadn't done that.....I put caladiums around my new white bird of paradise which doesn't seem to be a problem. Oh yeah I forgot that picture was after a close call to a tornado, and the poor leaves are a bit raggy.

I am surprised you all would have trouble growing dahlias. I grow them next to the house on the west side and during a normal summer we hit upper 90's to 100 alot, and they get baked constantly but seem to love it. This summer we barely ever hit 90 and lots of rain and they weren't too happy about the whole thing, I got blooms, but not nearly as many.

LOL, poor Patty has tried all of Rj's tricks for that Rangoon!

I think I am going to try some Dahlias. I have gotten some tough cultivator of Zinnias to grow..so why not Dahlias!

There is so much work to do in the garden!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Mine is under water. Still looks like a swamp.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

The Rangoons are tricky devils. I know of someone only an hour north of me that gets hers to bloom but can't get it to set seed.

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

I've tried trimming it back, using hibiscus food, bloombooster; let's see, what else have I tried in the past two or three years to get it to bloom. epsom salts . . . LOL I keep threatening to use the machete on it but am having a hard time admitting defeat. The vine is finally looking really healthy--now if I can just get it to bloom!!!!

Will you try tubers (or are they bulbs???) or buy dahlia plants, Rj? I come across them every once in awhile here in South Texas, but I try to pass them by despite how pretty they are. All your pictures make me want to plant some this fall and see how they do. Are you going to try them in pots or in the ground? Gosh they sure had some pretty cultivars at Buschart Gardens. I loved those big ones which were pink/white and a purple/white. So pretty!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Hi again, Happ,

The BOP. Do you take it inside in winter? I bought 3 and had them in pots in the lanai. Well, that lasted about 6 months and they broke the pots. They now reside in my side yard happy as clams. Well, how happy to clams get anyway?

For some reason the rangoon creeper is going crazy. It's less than a year old and it's beautiful. I did nothing. However, the yard is on a sprinkler system which feeds from a lake. Guess it's like giving fish emulsion all the time.

Nancy,
Did you get yours from Candela by any chance? That's who gave me mine a few years ago.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Hey Nery, glad Itsy Bitsy bloomed for you. Ler her get settled and the color will be more intense. The flowers are tiny but she will bloom profusely when she gets started. I should start more cuttings of that one but just yesterday I donated more than 60 plants that I had grown and it looks so much better without all those extra pots junking up the place. I hate to start any more cuttings and mess it up again. LOL

I don't think dahlias like our humidity in the southeast. They never put on much of a show (the ones that lived that is) for me.

Hey, budgie,

No, Cass didn't. Think I got it at Living Colors on Griffen Road here. But she is a very generous person and has given me many things.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I have a theory about setting seeds. I think it's a matter of pollinating, and the right pollinator. I have 2 slight variations of the Rangoon creeper, one which produces seeds, in fact the current vine is from the seed of the previous vine that perished. This one attracts more butterflies and humming bird moths than the other. I never find butterflies or other pollinators on the one in front which has larger flowers, than the one in back. The one in back (bought off of a friend and confirmed from Another Place in Time Nursery ( that it is another variation) has smaller flowers but way more clusters of them.
At least that is the theory I come up with after observing the two for a couple of years. I never notice any pollinators on the 3rd type, which is the double rangoon save some Bee's, but they usually pass them over, to the coral vine above it which they really love.

Patty, I'm going to try the tubers..I was going to look on line for some unless anyone has some suggestions on where to find Dahlia tubers. I always think of you when I see pink. I wanted to get this garden bag for you that had a huge pink flower on a black bag, but I was too poor.

RJ, can't find the thread again but Dahlianut, a DGer gave a link to someplace she buys and that is her passion. Might look her up and send a d-mail or find the last post.

okay..I'll google that ..thanks!

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Well, while we were talking about it, I went and checked the rangoon and had 15 ripe seeds with more in the bags unripe and bagged a couple more. I trimmed some of it back last month looking for seeds to bag and already it's grown back. What a monster. LOL A good portion covers the top a a dog kennel with chain link topper so I went inside and bounced it up and down and several ripe ones fell through. Beats climbing a ladder and digging through the growth!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

theory and all, I still wonder why some seed and some don't.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I only have the one and although I do get butterflies and bees, especially on the clerodendron, it's the tiny pharoah ants that swarm to my rangoon.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

hmmm.interesting to know that.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Hello all!!! I had posted a thread on the Propagation Forum concerning how to plant the Ragoon Creeper seeds and never got a reply. I have some seeds and would like to give it a try because I haven't been successful with cuttings from it yet. I've let them turn brown before gathering them. There seems to be a hard shell on the little pod. Do I crack it open? Nick it ? Soak it? or All of the above?

Just getting caught up again here and enjoyed everyone's beautiful plant's.

Debra and R.J., thank's for sharing the photo's of both the
Buchart Garden and Botanica Garden in Buffalo. I enjoyed viewing them both and R.J. that link you added about "beating plant's" gave me an idea for my bougainvillea;-)

Rita, your borneo giant is very impressive. Hope those cutting's are still coming along for you. All of mine that you sent are doing great.

Vossner, I love that var. syngonium... now that I know the name of that one and the one James ID for me, I will be on the look out. My hubby came in to tell me I had a bloom on one of my cajun hibs.. I think I posted the huge triple Mango one earlier. this one is Pale chiffon pink in colour almost white..this picture was in the am around 9 ish.. sorry about my Duke there, he had to sniff it since I was making a fuss over it..

Here is one that I have kept for three years, I always cut it way back inside for winter, and let it re-bloom from bare sticks in the Spring..

that cajun hibiscus is beautiful!

It looks like chiffon. Purdy.

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

It is pretty, and I love the little doggie's nose in the picture. What's the fun of gardening if you don't have a "friend" to share it with.

RJ in the ground or in a pot with the dahlia tubers? If you find a place to order, share it with us so we can check it out.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

it is raining cats and dogs here!!!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Honestly, re the Rangoon seeds I've never planted them myself. They self seeded, by falling on the dirt and growing. I would place the seed in loose soil barely covering it based on that experience.

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow your fern tree looks good!!!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Oppossums are the bane of our neighborhood. Couple of months ago I got up about 3AM for a drink of water. As I rounded the corner in the hallway I could see something on the floor. Having recently put rat poison under the deck I assumed one had come in through the doggie door and died when it got that far (have yet to see any inside). Of course, screamed for Mike to "Come here, quick!". Seems Miss Mattie had killed a baby possum and proudly brought it to the master. Yuck!

Oh, BTW, one must read Randy's link to get the catch.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks..it was burning a lot this summer, but it's getting pretty tall! re the Fern.

Yes, that young possum is all over..the one that was busted on the papaya is much bigger.
You still getting rain?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

OK Kids, What's happening to my heliaconia? All the flowers are getting like this. The other one about 30' away is unscathed. This one is the one that had no effects of last winter and the other was a wimp. The leaves look fine.

Joeswife and Rj, Thank you very much for sharing your vacation pictures, I enjoyed every shot. Thanks to everyone else for their interesting comments and pictures. It took me a while to get caught up.

phughes, that was a Crinum Qeen Emma, we sure would like to see how big it has grown.

RachelLF, the cuttings are doing exceptionally well, maybe because of all the rain we have been getting
