Tropical Garden #51

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Lillli,

Think that a curcuma. Maybe.

Hap

That is a Curcuma Lilli. We have a native one here and there are some from Thailand also. That one seems a little too pale to be ours.

I did buy a curcuma recently (not the one in the photo) and the color is a deeper pink and it doesn't have the yellow color on the bottom. Very cool!

The yellow are the flowers and the pink are the bracts. In the last photo the inflorescence looks small and the flowers seem strange/deformed. Although, could be a species that just looks like that.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

The later flower is a plant bought from the store and it's in a small container. So you are right about the flowers being small. I will be planting it in the ground. Thank you for the information about the flowers and the bracts. Hopefully next year, I will have beautiful flowers out of the smaller plant too. I wonder what cultivar the later one one is. The tag does not indicate.

noonamah, Australia

Mine are from the wild. They often grow in large colonies of hundreds of plants. I was given some tubers of Thai species but they never did so well. Probably because they are in wet ground year round. They need to be drier in the winter when dormant, same as where I've got my native ones.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I suspect there will soon be a spectacular dahlia garden somewhere in the heart of Houston. Absolutely magic, Randy. Thank you for sharing.

I love dahlias.. it is wondrful to have so many varieties.. thanks Randy.. I have a good collection of them.. just holler if you want any plants, They are ready to go.. I went to the Botanica gardens in Buffalo, NY and their tropicals were out of this world.. the building was really unique.. I was dissapointed in the lack of tropical hibiscus tho.. one little bitty snow queen, one double peach that wasn't blooming much , and this one that knocked my sox off... here is the entrance..

I am inspired to make something out of chicken wire and cover it in vines now.. that stuff hanging down I was told is moss .. they keep it moist..

They had a huge cactus room... while I was gone, one of my customers brought me in a little pot with two little cacti in it.. hmmm.. I don't think u r sposed to water them much.. I sure didn't see anyone watering this room while I was there

They let me in for free cuz Im a senior... I didn't know it, my sis in law paid the admin for everyone 6 bucks.. Our Botanica Garden here is huge but it is mostly outside stuff.. this one was mostly inside stuff.. hardly anything differrent on the outside.. but I did think of so many of you as I saw your plants in there.. there were no brugs, no Iochromas, no morning glorys, lots of other vines tho.. tons of big huge palms and trees and things.. I especially liked the begonia room.. here is the only other hib i saw besides the pink one and the peach one ... mine are all blooming.. love them..
my jasmines and cestrums and jessimines and well even the cleodenrum is blooming now here.. almost time to bring them inside.. sigh*

What's hanging down in that "dinosaur" photo is Tillandsia usneoides, often called Spanish Moss, but it's a bromeliad.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

And the cactus is actually a kalanchoe, Oak Leafed Kal. I think.

Sunshinesw,
You just wrap those ice cream pups in some wet paper towels or newspaper and have the post office drop them of at my house. I would love you forever. =)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Love the fern house! You know I'm going to try Dahlia's, but it's doubtful they will do well here unless I plant them right now for spring. But..has that daunted me before? And if you can grow tropicals in KY then why not Dahlias in Houston!!??
Put some blood meal in with your caladiums and they might bloom although it's end of the season for them. Mine usually bloom as soon as they come out of the ground.

Okay- I love it when I learn something new, and I've NEVER heard of this. ya just have to read this!

Oh my goodness! That was great RJ! My Grandma used to "kick" her huge peony bushes .... I never knew why, just thought she was mad or somthing.... by the way, it would have been nice if that place I went to had names on things.. only a few of the plants were ID'd. Will try the blood meal.... all mine are in containers.. still at least 6 weeks from a freeze here... ( I hope)

It looks like anthuriums to me

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

It won't open for me, but remember people beating their fruit trees with sticks so that they would produce more fruit.

Hap

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah, I noticed the chron is having issues this morning..but it's about beating the fruit tree's and tomatoes..and various other plants that haven't bloomed..wonder if it works on vines..I'm about to go beat the Hawaiian wood rose LOL!

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh love the pink hibbie and the other one too! RJ your pictures were lovely. All those beautiful PINK flowers. I MUST go and see it for myself. I was thinking you should start the dahlias about now or in October. I think they will be annual for you and me though. Don't think they would withstand the heat of mid summer, but you might have more luck cause you tend to get more rain than me.

I'll report you all for plant abuse.... ^_^

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Wouldn't you like more flowers, Hetty?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

randy you can plant rhizomes in apr may, they like ground warm/hot. can't let them go dry but not overly thirsty. They should do well for you in a full sun location but like anything else, some cultivars will be better so it will be a trial and error process.
joeswife, the kalanchoe is wonderful.

IME, caladiums/anthuriums, spathofiliums bloom irregularly. I think if I implemented a steady fertilization program it would see them every yr. Supposedly letting caladiums bloom takes overall energy for plant growth. I don't cut them off b/c I get one bloom here and one there. But if it turned out a whole patch bloomed I likely would cut them off.

RJ
I was at Buchart in May for the first time on the way back from an Alaskan cruise. It was absolutely gorgeous and much of it was still dormant but the tulips and other bulbs put on a real show. I have a thread on here somewhere with photos.

OK, here it is.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/990317/

would love to go again some day at a different time of the year. I hear the roses are to die for.

Winter Haven, FL(Zone 9b)

My Queen Emma Crinum Has bloomed profusely! This season it has sent up about 9 bloom stalks already. My caladiums have bloomed like crazy also. I have about 5 in bloom right now, i will try to take pictures tonight.

I also have an Australian Tree fern but I am noticing that the fronds are getting a little burnt up, I don't know what I am going to do with it yet?

Good morning!
Tina, no pups yet on my Ice cream bananas.
RJ, Buchart Garden is beautiful!
I guess I should go beat up my grafted perssimon tree. It's 10+ years old but never even flowered, my dh said he is going to chop it down because he said it's an ugly tree.
Joeswife, buffalo garden is beautiful also. that's velvet ear kalancho, mine are huge! the leaves are about a foot long.

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

I am having the same problem with my tree fern. It was getting too much sun so I dug it up and placed it in a pot on the patio where it only gets filtered sun. It still has not recovered fully and I keep trimming off the burned fronds.

so RJ do you think beating my rangoon might help. It is looking really green and healthy but still NO BLOOMS!!!!!

Hey Rita wasn't that a Queen Emma crinum that you gave me? It has grown a lot; it's huge but no blooms yet. I meant to take a picture and send you so you could see how big it has grown. I had to trim my esperanzas back cause they were covering it up.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

phughes,
Did you trim it back this spring. RJ suggested it to me a couple years ago and I trimmed mine all the way back to the main stem in March. It now covers a hugh area and has bloomed quite a bit. I have been busy bagging seeds before they fall off.

Dandridge, TN(Zone 6a)

RJ, thanks for all the photos, what a lovely place. I like the comment about the owner serving tea and getting comments... lol
Debra, great photos of your visit as well! I love the glass house, can you imagine what that cost?? All the plants look so healthy and pretty. That is my complaint about botanical gardens as well, not every plant is identified. Of course, it's always the one plant I'm interested in, too-
RJ, funny article about the beating of plants- I added a note about my dog chewing up an old weigela bush one winter, and having the plant bloom like crazy the following spring. I always thought it was the pruning, but maybe not?
Sunshine, Ice creams don't pup very often...

here is red plumbago sans blooms. As you can see, leaves are larger than reg. blue or white plumbago. Flowers are similar.
