The Roundup Party is over Part 2

Sorry Willow, sedums are not alpines. I cannot go back and quote what he said ( hope someone can) I am going out on a tread here, My under standing of the Dif. is sedums can live in soil, Alpines can not. they have to be in a bed of nothing but sand and gravel and a liner to keep the worms away, as the worms make soil and Alpines don't like it. Somebody tell me I heard that right LOL

Partly right, Tills. 'Alpines' simply refers to the geographic area where a plant has evolved and grows best: in the high altitudes of mountains. Some of them can handle light soil, but many of them grow in the scree, which is basically nothing but crushed rock. Some have special needs such as constant fresh water at their roots only. Some alpines are sedums, which is a classification of plants that describes having a fleshy leaf that conserves moisture. Succulents grow in every type of environment, including alpine areas. So not all alpines are succulents, but some are. All sedums are succulents, but not all sedums are alpines. Make sense? Just like all cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti. In general, succulents are drought tolerant, and so are most alpines, so many can grow in similar conditions. They both look lovely in stone or tufa troughs. I love the large trough he has, in your photo.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom and stepdad. That's such a hard thing to go through.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

LOL I was right and wrong at the same time. Sorry Willow.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Tilly, you need a big ((((HUG)))) and maybe a cup of cammomile tea to get you nice and sleepy, and a good rest so you can survive you first day back at work. So sorry your step dad is needing nursing home care now, and your mom sounds like she needs a lot of support too. It is hard to be far apart when your family needs help.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Thank you Holly, but I think you need it more LOL all them little kids I so could not do that.
Off to bed and let my mind get a grip. That #### bug is still here, or tis cousin.
Night all

Tills....you've done a wonderful job. I just got caught up on the thread(s) and thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. Sofer's eloquent musings (especially the fairy flight) the extra tidbits about what was going on (like the gift exchange) but especially the pictures. Almost feel like I've been the fly on the wall so to speak. Thanks to all who contributed.

Sorry to hear about your mom, been looking after mine for 4 yrs. since dad died. She lives next door to me so it is easier, but she took a bad turn for the worse about a month ago. Better now, but still needing a lot of help. That's why I haven't been posting a lot. Bought a netbook, so now I can check on DG when I stay at her house. Not much time to work in the garden right now. Next year will be better, I keep saying. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}

I've been AWOL, but trying to peek in. Work is messing up my leisurely lifestyle...but not for long.

Tills,
I tell ya...the phase of life where we start having to "parent our parents" is VERY DIFFICULT. It will REALLY help to talk openly with your family/friends who have already lost parents, or are in this phase of "declining health" days. Sooooooo very hard...but as you compare notes/comments and insanity with people you will find some great consoling. Even a few laughs along the trail of tears.

My mom was just an angel in her final years and my dad was just mean and verbally VICIOUS. I wanted to get my mom out of their house but it was all she knew and would not go. Dad declared himself her primary caregiver and I still am haunted about what possibly went on behind closed doors. She deserved so much better. I always suspected dad had had multiple mini-strokes (TIA's), but he wouldn't listen to anyone - not Dr's....anyone. Man...that was a rough go.

(((((Hugs)))))))) to you...

Felicia

Also...re the fun rocks brought to the round-up? I saw this idea at a garden tour a couple years ago. Don't know as I'll ever get them created, but I LOVED the idea.

Seems like the RU was months ago.
So glad the Mt. Tahoma nursery was well catalogued. I have decided to build a bed for Alpines, so I will be returning to Mt. Tahoma for plant acquisition next spring...

Lynn - the rock I gave you is called Eagle Mountain. I am using it in my front yard for retaining walls & steps, so I'll think of you everytime I see it!
Here's a shot of the rock - lots of reddish-bronze in it:

This past week I have visited a local Rock yard daily; so far I have picked/hauled/unloaded/placed 3.05 ton of rock (6100#). No wonder I have Linguini arms. I am attempting 2 different projects: the front yard re-do, and various retaining walls for anywhere there is a severe slope.

The boulders below were delivered & temporarily placed. They're going to be sunk into the ground more in order to shore up the slope off the corner of the driveway. When the parcel next door was developed, the city gov't rules/code did not consider the ongoing impact of redirecting watershed, which resulted in our inheriting the problem. This is a prime example of " 'Good enough' is never done".
Hopefully, this will curtail any further erosion, and I get boulders!

Katye, I love the reddish colors in your rock. I bet your retaining wall and steps are gorgeous. Pictures, please.

I am looking forward to going to Mt. Tahoma again in the spring. Don't forget me!!!!

Tills, I am so sorry to hear about your step-parent's health. It is so hard to deal with, especially when you don't live nearby.

Highmtn, those are adorable rock bunnies.

Pony, what's the latest with Traci?

More pics, remember this sign ladies? It cracked us up!

I have complete rock envy! Those are just beautiful, Kayte. What stunning color!
I also think the rock bunny is magnificent and wish to have one! Or maybe several of different sizes sitting out in the yard as though eating my grass. I love it! Frankly, one of the tools I have wanted for years and years is a drill that will drill holes in rocks. I have so many things I'd like to do with holes in rocks. sigh.

Hey, isn't that sign down the street from me? Lakewood doesn't REALLY want to slow anyone down, so they do 'humps' rather than 'bumps'. Even my own son knows how to go over those things without slowing down. What a joke.

Wow. Jumping on the "Rock Envy" bandwagon here... those are beautiful.

I want a rock bunny too! So cute!

Tracy and I noticed that oh-so-friendly sign on the way in to Lynn's place... yikes.

Lynn, nothing new. Next appointment is an MRI on Wednesday.

Ah, yes, Lynn, how well I remember that sign! Had to pull over and make sure I left my shotgun at home. LOL! Laurie will think Americans are threatening and strange given these signs of slow humping and shooting!

Remember the photo further up that Mary posted of the strange looking plant at Mt. Tahoma? I forgot to post that it is a Mandrake (made famous in the Harry Potter series as they allegedly scream if you pull them out of the ground...) . It's a very rare species and few are known in cultivation, so you are all lucky that you not only saw it, but didn't pull it up! You would have surely heard the owner scream had you done so. I think it is Mandragora turcomanica, very endangered species.

I absolutely love the "Hot Bed". I totally want some of those tall red flowers in the front center- the ones she grew from seed... can't remember what they are now. Lynn? Melissa? Can you refresh my memory? I'm haunted by them, I must find some as soon as possible.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Weren't they dahlias?

Love her hydrangeas
