Joeswife, have a good vacation. I am jealous, I'm too afraid to leave my plants with anyone other than my friend that is in Africa now. btw, your MIL's plants are awesome.
joegee, thanks. I spent some time looking up the Sambuca Nigra, only to find that it will not grow in my zone. It was the best new plant for 2006.

Tropical Plants: Tropical Garden # 50
placenciarita, I would talk very sternly to them and tell them to bloom, or else! hee hee hee.
Are they planted outdoors all the time? Full sun or shade?
I don't have any secrets, they seem to bloom when they want, usually early spring but sometimes they bloom in the summer too.
here is dwarf firebush. If you grow the reg. firebush you know it can get huge. When I got the compacta I was thinking: "oh goodie, no pruning". WRONG. The compacta grows to about 4 ft, so if you plant it in a small area, you will be pruning. I believe the compacta part refers to the size of the leaves. If you put the two plants side by side, there is decidedly a diff. in size.

here is my other var. althea or var. rose of sharon. I'm gonna try to grow it as a standard.
Lakesidecallas, you are very funny!! Now I know where I went wrong. I was being nice to them, begging them to please bloom for me.
I do have them planted on the east side of my house, in the ground. They are protected in the winter in a hoop house. They usually get half a day's sun.
Sierra Leone Lily 'Fireflash'
vossner, what a pleasure to see all your pretties, the canna stole the show.
I wish that I had panted those oxblood lilies in the front yard they are stunning.
I did not know that there is a dwarf firebush. that is good info., esepcially for us that have to tote them in and out of gh's.
Your pant is Hibiscus abelmoschus moschatus, Musk Mallow
Your Rose of Sharons, looks as if they are admiring one another
Hoya, shooting star
Hi all.
Rita, your Alocasia Crassifolia is a lovely plant. I have not read up-on the A. crassifolia, is it a new hybrid? My little hilo beauty has not grown well for me at all but my A. cucullata has done extremely well for me here and has outdone all of my colocasia's as far as pup's go. Beautiful bloom's on your wisteria.
joeswife, you captured some great shot's from your fuchia plant. Where in the world do those plant's grow well and stay looking good;-)
Joe G., you will have to post picture's of your house when you get your "bohemian" look going/done. Sound's great!
Vossner, beautiful bloom's on your firebush and what an interesting black banana.
Are your callas growing well otherwise?
Vossner....downpour? we're getting rain? Good, because I'm sure Brian hasn't turned on a hose the whole time I've been gone!
Nice picts Rita
Love that flower Rachel!
my DH said he saw a pretty little green hummer hovering by our garage the other day. They've been in the zinnias.
hiya randy. I couldn't access your momma's garden in BC and yes, we're getting good rains, the long, soaking types. Supposed to rain thru Monday. This time I believe the weather liars, lol.
Sunshine, what you are calling FL fern reminds me of a type of rhipsalis.
Rita, does the Sierra Leone lily produce flowers? very pretty plant.
Rj I'm even getting rain!! Lots of it . . . I just love it too after our long drought.
I can't wait to see your pictures of the gardens you are visiting. Your mom's garden was so beautiful and serene.
I'm going to try and down load some pictures today. My brother and his wife just arrived, and true to tech form I think they brought some goodies that will get my pictures to the lap top. The first blog will be about the city. Our Condo overlooks James Bay, it's spectacular.
Patty, I'm sooooo glad you are getting rain! From what I read in the chronicle, it sounds like it may be a soggy month!
It was rainy here yesterday, and for a while I thought I was near home in Houston it was so muggy. The next few days are suppose to be stellar! Buchart Gardens today!
Are you doing any whale watching?
There is a big bookstore downtown (not a US chain) that I can't remember the name of, but it had a lot of books about the local area. That's where I found my "Trees of Vancouver Island" book. Wish I knew where it was, after we moved we never got my bookcases up and I have boxes of books everywhere...
I wish I could have stowed away in your suitcase. I would love to tour that garden. I've looked at it on the web and told my DH he has to take me there before i die.
I'm looking in to Whale watching. We are right next door to a company, in fact we watch the boats leave the dock from the balcony. Yesterday there were not many sightings according to the bloke, so we are checking daily for a good time. I did do it a couple of years ago which I'm afraid spoiled me as there were three pods in the bay, one from Seattle, one from the Hawaiian islands and the local pod. The other two were in town to mix the gene pool.
I'm about to organize our tour of Buchart..sunny and beautiful today. In the mean time, here are some pictures of around town.
Oh Victoria!

Oh, aren't we all jealous of you! Great photos, thanks for sharing.
We were there the beginning of October? Or was it November? Anyhow, the whale tours had ended the week before, I was so disappointed. There was only one place still open, they look for whales and then radio in, and you have to be able to go right away. It was sort of expensive and I didn't want to take a chance on not being able to go, so I didn't sign up.... didn't you know they went out and saw a big pod, arrgh.
But I walked all over town, and we had rented a little car in Vancouver and took it over on the ferry, so I drove all up and down the island. Buchart was open but I was advised just about everything was dormant for the winter. I found some great beaches on the east coast and we found some nice parks with HUGE!!! trees on the west coast.
I don't travel a great deal so it was a huge thrill for me.
Here was a sign at the beach.
