Glad you got to celebrate (finally) Jen.
Coffee Break # 17 - Early Fall?
Why am I suddenly hungry?
please don't talk about potatoes... I am in morning over mine
;)
I'm with Boston. Sudenly envisioning a steak in the near future.
Or at least a roast beef sub for lunch....heck, it's Friday!
(Politically correct memo: budgets must be obeyed, and gastronomic restrictions are a personal choice. End of "Public Service Announcement.")
Allison, do you lose all your taters????
Those look very nice----I like potatoes roasted with rosemary & olive oil---would rather have that than the steak!
Oh, that sounds yummy!
Karen
Tonight I had friends over for dinner. We had baked chicken marinated in Italian dressing, Basmati rice with almonds and cranberries, and corn on the cob, as well as rolls and butter. Oh, and pickles, dill. All very good! And choco chip cookies made by Shaw's for dinner. They were quite good!
Karen
that does sound yummy Robin .... we boiled them up and put butter on them... they were very good
My 4 yr old gkid was telling me all the things she liked about summer---corn-on-the-cob being right up there---then she said when it's off the cob, she doesn't like it---I have to agree with her!
Me too!
Must get some today.
My poor DH buys corn-on-the-cob at Stop and Shop - I say "that was probably picked last week in Chile!" But the Farmer's Market corn is really dinky this year....
Yes, the local corn and tomatoes didn't get optimal growing conditions in a lot of areas this year.
Yes, when it's on the cob it's tastier. I always have to floss my teeth afterwards, though.
Karen
Good for your teeth, anyway, though.
Our farmers' corn has been pretty good---just not enough of it---the tomatoes are totally tasteless----
I was at a friend's house the other night, and we made sandwiches in which we put tomatoes fresh from her garden. They were very good!
Karen
I wait all year for garden tomatoes---this summer the store's tasted better.
Our farmers market corn was outstanding this year as always.
We just got some sweet corn from the farm around the corner. Haven't had a bad ear from them yet!
Here, the local farmers sell to the big market chains as well, so we have a choice close-by. This weekend though I checked out the veggies from the farmers and they didn’t look too great. Everyone here is complaining about some sort of tomato blight… I don’t usually grow edibles so I’m not fluent in the lingo, but I hear the plum tomatoes did better than the ‘regular’ type this year.
My tomatoes have been a disaster.
Sorry to hear that, Victor.
sorry to hear about the problems with t's - mine have been great and will be doing more canning tomorrow.
Mine have been very slow but otherwise OK.
in case anyone is interested it's coleus day at Atlock farms here in NJ.. this sat the 12th
Going to farmer's stand today for corn, tomatoes, & apples---love Ginger Gold.
Thursday is our FM day. Now that I can grow my own tomatoes, and since their corn is so punky, not much reason to go. DH and DD don't agree on any other veggie.
The corn & tomatoes were delicious--but no Ginger golds---guess I have to wait til the fair next weekend.
I am loving following this thread. Moving back "home" in a year or two so haning out in the NE forums to get acquainted and make new friends. Have already made some and look forward to meeting them all.
If it makes you all feel better, was a freaky year for crops here in NC too. We started a CSA on our farm this year for the first year and have had to skip weeks, start late, end early all cause crops are doing weird things here.
Had really cool wet Spring, lost 400 brocc and cabbage plants. Summer squash got wiped out from squash bugs, then they moved to the cukes. I usually have about 50 pints of pickles canned by now I have zilch! Corn did well, beets did well and we had a tasty bumper crop of tomatos. Just dug our sweet potatoes Saturday and they were huge and tasty. Hopefully we will get Fall brocc and cabbage.
Looking forward to getting back to the NE where bugs freeze in the winter! LOL
Hi Susan!
Where will you be moving to??
Our tomatoes here have not been great this year, either. I had visions of a great veggie garden, as it's the first year I've gotten into it since moving back to the old homestead. But, alas, it was not to be! Maybe things will go better next year.
Susan, it's nice 'meeting' you, and I look forward to getting to know you better. Where in the NE are you moving to?
Karen
Oh sorry, will be moving back to the South Shore of MA. Born and raised there. Will be living in Whitman. My family is there as well as my two grown sons who live in neighboring towns.
I moved away 9 years ago. It was a good move though I met my husband Don and we have been married 7 years. I miss New England. But I will miss the long growing season here. That will be my only adjustment. I hope to have a greenhouse so I can extend the season.
Karen we will be neighbors!!!!
Wow, susan, you're right! Do you remember King's Castle Land on Rt. 18? One of my best friend's uncles owned that place, and we used to go there all the time. I loved it! I especially loved the toy store they had. There's a Stop and Shop there now. Oh, and across the street is Paradise Water Gardens. I love going there. Makes me wish I had a much bigger pond. And then there's Saftler's down the street, which is still there. Amazing, isn't it? Oh, and Christo's in Brockton is a great place to eat.
I recently went with our garden club on a tour of a private garden that is behind the new Stop and Shop in Whitman. This couple's place was amazing!
Oh, if you want to know a good garden club to join, the Hanson Garden Club is a great one. That's the one I belong to. I think it's one of the better ones around.

Karen, You are too cute! My 2 sisters and a brother live in Whitman, my son lives in Rockland, my youngest son lives in Kingston as of October 10th when he gets married and my neice lives in Pembroke. I come home every few months. I was up in July and will be up in October for my sons wedding, then again in December for Christmas, then again in April. So, I am in Whitman all the time! My Mom and sister and I moved to Whitman from Braintree when I was 17, I lived there til I was 22. My sister and brother have been there since 1975, when I was 17. Now you know how old I am. I will be building a house on land that my sister owns behind her house. My husband and I are excited about the move but I just started a 18 month Horticulture program at a local college here so we hope to stay long enough for me to finish the program. I will be up next month for my sons wedding. Coming in on the 9th and leaving on the 13th. A short visit but a fun one. When I am up in December we hope to be there for a couple weeks. When we moved to Whiman my Mom babysat my brothers kids and we use to take them to King's Castle all the time. Isn't it sad that things have to change and go away. Same with Edaville RR, I hear it isn't open all the time anymore. And Cranberry World closed in Plymouth, whats up with that? I wrote to Ocean Spray about that one and they sent me coupons! Bozos!
I am really looking forward to meeting you and thanks for telling me about the garden club I have always wanted to join one. Do they have a web site?
So tell me what you grow?
lol, her screen name doesn't give it away??? hee hee
Sorry to hear Victor, I have tomatoes coming out my ears...I keep getting them from both neighbors and I was growing black cherry and big beef but in containers so I don't think you get as much.
Allison, why is everything going on on Sept 12th??? It's my nephew's going away party he's off to Army boot camp.
I noticed the daylily part Jen. Was hoping she grew other things besides. lol If ya can't eat it, I don't grow it!
Just kidding, I have some flowers just don't take care of them very well, the weeds got ahead of me this year really bad. But my veggie gardens look great!
