Shes about too... #46

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Please tell me how to take cuttings from the hibiscus, and I willl get you some!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

LindaKay, I cut my hibs down at the base of the plant, dip in hormone, wrap in paper towel( wet) and then wrap in newspaper and then wrap in zip lock to the first set of leaves.... when I am sending cuttings.. when I am rooting cuttings, I just cut and stick into the soil next to the mother plant and keep moist.. I also have air layered some hib cuttings off the heavier woody stems and that works for my roses as well.. hope this helps..

Thank you so much Nita, I have never tried rooting from cuttings, and this was the first time rooting from seeds. To get those blooms, I'l try anything!

Well, I will try it, and let you know. Thanks for the info! If there a special time of year, or season to do this?

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Good Morning Everyone! I've been lurking and drooling and thinking that my brugs will never bud this year, even though they had a Y on each one last year.

Congratulations! It is always a wonderful feeling to see those little buds.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I have some brugs that are 3 years old that have yet to bloom for me.. they are in pots.. I repotted them this year in much larger pots and am still hoping for blooms. Nothing has grown well this year with our strange weather.. been moderately hot.. near 100 a lot but not really as hot as usual. Not enough rain in my book but of course... I finally get buds on my plumeria after waiting for 3 years and the clouds and cool weather arrive!

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

May try to start some Hibiscus cuttings. See what happens and let you know.

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Kim, that's a priceless picture!! I bet he's thinking how to bottle that essence and market it.
Too funny.. thought I'm the only 'smart one' to try 2 in one :D Nope.. didn't work for me.

Please tell me what the vine is in the background?

How cool! I am so happy for you! Also glad your DH liked the smell too.. mine acts like he doesn't care, but he is always the first to let me know when I have a bloom.. I am home, brugs are all loaded and about too, caught five worms so small u could barely see them on MAYA.. poor baby.. and a huge worm on my stardancer X? out front , killed it too..
found four worms on the brugs out back, squished them too.. I even found a pillar on my geranium I wintered over, had eaten almost all its leaves.. *sigh* then I found a teeny tiny slug baby on my prize Roma tomatoes.. Hubby found four bloom clumps on the IOCHROMAs .. but all in all, the flowers are all so wild and crazy after all the rain we had here while I was gone..

Rain, we have had lots here in KC, heavens to Betsy, this last week was the longest we have gone without rain. Picked 31 tomatos yesterday! Versi is blooming and has lots of buds, I even have some buds on Miss Anna and she is only about a foot tall. Those plumerias I tell you they are about to send me over the edge, do they ever do anything? Think I will repot them this week before the cold sets in. I am afraid to keep them in the garden room cause I don't keep it real warm, I have them in the solar room. I had one bloom when I first got it (suppose to be red and it was white). If I have waited all this time and they are all white I will be sooooo disappointed.

Debra glad everything made it pretty well while you were gone. Every year on my peelie bark birch, I get these worms that just devour some of the leaves, and they are really late this year. I keep a close eye on the brugs cause I sure don't want those worms on them. Love vacation but can't help but worry about my plants....I am cutting back the hibs for winter, I will try to take starts. Do you do the same thing for hardy hibs?

Deb, there is a tropical swap going on........

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Hello, Interesting reading here. I too have lot's of Brugs About too. Problem is, where I had to plant them, many are planted on the back side of the fence and they seem to like to bloom at night or late evening and when I see them, they have passed their peak. They also smell stronger at night....am I imagining this or is night their real habit ? I will cut mine back to the ground in late fall and will gladly share with anyone wanting them...After all, LOL it was you, my dear friends, that got me addicted to them just last fall. LOL It's payback time.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Faye, they do smell better at night! They always do! Don't know why, but when mine are blooming, I am always up late, just strolling around the brugs! Breathe deep! LOL
As far as the hibiscus go, I have hardy, and tropical ones here, and so far, I have never done anything to them, They are in pots, and they die back, but they always come back in the spring! I will be tring the cuttings on them also. More to share, soon I hope?

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Faye brugs are night blooming plants that's why they smell better then. :0)

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Thank you dear friends, now I will have to be a night watcher! Anything to see these beauties.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

All my brugs are about to... except Maya and Versi Peach.. that is okay tho.. they can wait until I bring them in, I like to stroll around and smell things at night. I took cuttings tonight of my pink gold flame lonicera, also my john clayton and my old fashioned gold and white... also from the bandana red lantana, will be taking cuttings from all the other lantanas the rest of this week getting ready to trade.. cut back my mom in laws tropical hibs that are three colours in one pot and is 6 years old.. I have repotted them every year except this year, and she said to leave them alone .. I stuck the cuttings down into the pot they were in.. I will be cutting my tropicals that are over three years old this weekend, but they are still blooming away.. I have so many tropicals// only two hardys , but no blooms on the one year old yet, and the other is till in the growers pot I bought it in.. cuttings off of the pink frost i. batatas, will be cutting cestrum and cleodendrums in another week or two.. and then the jasmines..
Here is monster white..

Beautiful garden Debra. Versi is in full bloom at my house and Lemon twist has one bloom. Lots of buds on everything else, just not blooming.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I know alot of you wanted monster white cuttings.. question.... see the two branches there in about to bloom? If I cut from up there will they be "above the Y" ? or do they have to Y out again for that to be true? It was just a stick when I got it..
here is the "potatoe Patch" I took over after dg dug the potatoes up.. these flowers and plants were all from seeds in this picture
The brugs are under the umbrellas, where i moved them from the back fence while I was gone.. ( in pots)

Thumbnail by joeswife
Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Debra, I don't know the answer to that, but as fast as Monster white grows, it probably wouldn't make much difference. I would only cut where you want to trim it up at. I know I would be happy with any cutting, it doesn't have to be a prime piece.

So the seeds you sowed really late and they did all that.....? Wowzier!

Debra you don't have any iris? Do you like them? If you do I am going to need to fix that problem....LOL I love iris, I have rebloomers on my desk this morning. I will have to take a pic and post them.

I love my DH but sometimes his logic escapes me. I bought 31 bags of mulch on sale for next year. I didn't get them out of the truck so he needed the truck and unloaded them, (this is where I get confused) He unloaded 31 bags of mulch and stacked them in front of the glass doors of the garden room........true I can still get in the doors but 1-it blocks the light 2-that is where I wheel the big pots into the garden room (it is sloped to the ground) 3-looks bad 4-not protected (since I am saving for next year) just to name of few points 5-I am at work all day which has a phone (lunch I have a cell phone). His reasoning he didn't know where to put them......gotta love them....LOL

Tis' true ; }

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

I have to catch up later, I'm just about to get off work.

Jaye you are so right, that's exactly what I'm doing but we haven't seen sun in 2 1/2 days and it's definitely there but needs to see the sun! All of my plants are there but need to see the sun!

I'll bbl

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Joyce I love iris, but for some reason, the ones I have planted have not bloomed.. the one patch I had of my great aunt effies finally bloomed afer being in the ground for 8 years.. she called them orchid iris, they got really tall and looked like yours in the picture there.. here is a picture of mine this spring..
the newest seed area is in the bean patch where I threw seeds down.It is also going well, no blooms yet so will have lots by end of october.. I love to plant seeds.. love to see them come up.. I got some iris seeds from an very very old iris patch in Winfield, Ks. I didn't get to see the blooms, so this will be fun, if those come up. I am planting them this fall out back. Maybe I plant too deep for them? maybe I water too much?

Debra, that is a spuria iris. That is what all of the spuria hybrids have orginated from, or that is what I was told by Jim Hedgecock of Comanche Acres Iris Farm. He is suppose to have the largest collection. You and Bonnie will have to come and I will take you to the iris farm. I think there are 20 acres of iris and you can see them in bloom. He is way too close to me....LOL I love going there. Course the spuria bloom later than the normal iris. Here is a pic of one section of the farm in bloom.

Oh my goodness, I want to go too! What awesome beauty those Iris are....I would love one(at least) of every color.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Come on, we will go to the iris farm, then up to the peony farm and then play and laugh all night.

Really that is just a small shot of the iris farm. On really good years (weather permitting) it is amazing.
The peony farm is wonderful also. We were walking he fields of peonies and fell in love with one, I have really good tast cause if I remember right it was $300.00 an eye! They had peonies with normal prices also, I just thought it was funny I could pick out one of the most expensive.....

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

LOL you and me both.. I love those! I can't seem to grow them or poppies, I have planted both and killed them all I guess.. Frosty has bloomed

Debra don't ya just love Frosti?? She was the first one to bloom this year for me. Way early. I think we are about to have our 4th flush. I have two of them and they do not disappoint.

Juanita

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Looky what I have blooming this morning! She is NOID, but just a pertty! Looks like she may turn orange? This is the one that bloomed about a month ago, but was a tiny yellow bloom in the heat. Now that it has cooled off, she is about to show off. There are more buds on the plant too! ^_^
Love the iris fields too, so pretty, but I have not been able to grow them here. Too hot maybe?

Hey JB, how are you doing? Your being pretty quiet these days. Hope your not too busy in the greenhouse?
Hope you all have a good day!
