So. Calif. Fall RU 2009

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

We cross posted, weegy. Like I said, I love hanging out with smart people! : - )
That is a good thing to keep handy, and it's pretty cool that you found it.

LOL SW! Nothing smart about me!
I'm pretty much open to any month but June next year, our son is getting married..4 down, 1 to go! And of course I don't know when the wedding shower will be but as of now, I'm open to pretty much anything and anywhere.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

The only bad month for me is June. Lots of birthdays and wedding anniversaries. Last week of May not so good either.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm with you there weegy and DP, my youngest will be graduating from High School this year. I don't know if they will schedule graduation for late May or in June, yet. So late May and June are out. By June it starts to get hot, but you never know, we could have June Gloom! : - O

How about April? Still cool enough to plant and no graduations or weddings usually.

I've created a new account on GMail with a calendar. Will post URL later.

Great, Jo, then I can update the calendar!

Weeg, Emma is absolutely heart melting. she has a lot of hair like my little butterball Shelby does. She is an Angel.

That calendar is a great idea. Seems like with this potentially sized group we could just about fill it up. Shall we block off Mother's Day weekend (2nd Sun May)?

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Good idea!

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I would sure like to know how you got that calendar? did You get it off your email then just give us the link to it?
I don't know how to do fancy stuff! lol

I just got laid off on Wed. so I don't know if I will have obligations at this time, but so far April is way better for me, because it is when I can still plant stuff and may have winter sowing plants to put in the pot for trade, later is too hot. April is a chancy month for rain and cold though, but 6 of this 1/2 dozen of another. We are supposed to have El Nino, so good for us, maybe bad for our RU.

Did you get the place that you tried to get for this one reserved?

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

If it rains depending upon the size of the group we can move it inside the greenhouse, or inside the bee barn. Might be a little sticky in the bee barn from extracting the honey, but won't be any live bees by then. They winter up north in the Bakersfield area.
Definitely block out Mother's Day.

Hmmm, Bakersfield and Fresno, SW {chuckling}.

Eeeeeeeeeeew, a bee barn?!?! I'd rather play in a hummingbird barn, girl.

Linda and The MopTops

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Who wouldn't, Linda? We just extract the honey in there. I like the sound of bee barn better than the bee wharehouse, don't you?
Depending on how many folks come we should be able to have someplace dry and out of the rain. LOL!
You can always visit the hummers. I think they are moving into the gh. I wish I could, but it does rain from the condensation in there sometimes. LOL!
I meant to take photos when weegy and her DH came by for a quick visit, but we both forgot our camera's. Duh moment there. I'll see if I can get some when I get home, but they are probably all done extracting for the year. DH can still show you how it's done though. : - )

Sounds interesting, SW!

Dawn, the calendar is from a GMail account I set up (they are free) - I made it 'public' so everyone can see it. It's similar to the spreadsheets that some co-ops use to keep track of orders & shipping - which is what gave me the idea.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Cool idea, I didn't realize they could be publicly accessed though. Pretty neat. So it is going to be in Menefee? Almost the same area as Dr. Don ha? Couldn't have it with the bees in Bakersfield so it would be an hour from me instead of 2 1/2 ha? lol

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Hey You South Western Gardeners, it's time to discuss the 2010 Spring Round Up!
I am still planning on hosting the event.
The first thing we have to do is settle on a date for the event.
KC, was sweet enough to set up a calendar link so we can post dates we already have booked.
Here's the link: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1044255/
Please let us know asap so we can start planning it.
Thanks you all!

Whenever we have the RU, will any one be wanting any blackberry starts? I have runners I'm going to be pulling out and if there are any takers, I will pot them rather than tossing them. Do not know how many there are, maybe 10, maybe more, haven't counted. If anyone wants them, please speak up 'cause I'll be pulling them in a week or two. Would have been this week, but just received call and we're on our way back to Central Ca this next week. First come, first served.....

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I do Sherry, I have some thornless ones that did so well, I want more to grow on a fence.
I just hope we do it no later than mid June before the heat wave. Usually June is gray. This year we should look on the Farmer's Almanac to see about this El Nino thing. Ya know, we could get rained out any time, if we get the rain, they are saying is coming. We will see?

Hemet, CA(Zone 9b)

Sherry...............I love to have some of your blackberry starts.
See you at Jule's place.
Sylvia

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Okay, you two got them...I'll pot some this week. These are not thornless. Yep, we're supposed to get between 4"-8" of rain this next week..wowee......all at once...sigh...

I've started a new thread for the Spring 2010 roundup here:

If you have any more, I would like one. Thanks Sherry

Lynda

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Sherry if they are not too large put one of the starts of for me and I iwll bring one here to try. I know they grow here but I have killed at least 5 of these so far.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Okay....no more takers please. You really do need more than one. If you're serious about growing the berries, you need more than one to get a good line of berries going....and, be warned...you also really need to maintain them. You don't want them to 'escape' and take off in all directions or you will curse me forever...lol...

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

I would never curse you Sherry :o)

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

K, I know you've started another thread for the RU, but I don't want to clutter it up with this, so just one more....I also have ash trees (10-14) in 5 gal pots if anyone wants any. These are seed grown, so they may be male or female. I love ash, they're fast growing, tough, graceful...the down side is if they're 'male' trees, those with allergy problems will have trouble with them. If they're 'female' trees, you will get lots of seedlings which many consider to be a nuisance. I do ask that you bring your own 5 gal pots to transfer into as I'm partial to hanging onto my new 5 gal pots....lol....

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Okay...ash trees are taken.....

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Anyone want Palm Fronds ??? LOL

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Nooooo....we have neighbors with palms, we'll get enough of theirs I think.....and they complained about our leaves.....

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

They should be composting them and thank you! The only leaves I get are from our neighbor's sycamore.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I have Mystic Merlin Malva, they self sow all over the place, but while they are dormant for the most part, in my zone, I will have better luck potting some up. I love them, they take crappy soil to a degree too. The ones that grow in good soil with drainage, grew 7 feet tall or so. If they don't have the best drainage, it is nice to have a plant that grows where other things won't grow. I love the purple flowers that smother them for months. I also see you can clip them into an informal hedge or grow them really tall and wide. Let me know, I can probably get at 5 of them, without tearing out my garden, since some of them grew into chicken wire that I laid down for gopher barriers.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Put me down for two of the Mystic Merlin Malva, please, hellnzn11.
Thanks,
WIB!

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

I would like one, please. Since they self sow AND don't need rich soil, they sound great for me.
Thanks
