Why is my verbascum wilting?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Do not let them live - do whatever it takes to kill them but beware of products your pets might devour. There are a few threads on slugs now but I don't know if you can see them since you're not a subscriber. Maybe it's a good reason to subscribe!

One person uses a 20 to 1 solution of ammonia and water but it has to make direct contact with the slugs.

I'll show you a photo of baby slugs nestled in daylily foliage at the base of the plants - gross. Don't enlarge if you get queasy.

Are you sure those are slugs and not grubs? Mine didn't look like that. Whatever the ones I had were, they certainly should not have been there!

Came across this site showing the eggs and a 6 day old one!

I just can't look at any more of these photos because I am too grossed out!!!!!

I bought Ortho Ecosense Brand Slug & Sail Killer - "can be used around pets & wildlife." I am still going to look at their site just to double check that info.

Oh, yes, I know my slugs and people even create cartoons about me demolishing them!

LOL!!!!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Pirl -- I am so confused! What I had was mostly in the top inch of soil but also in 3 inches of the soil. I didn't notice until I dug up Wilty. Ok, slugs aren't in the ground but mostly on top of the ground or under something. They were worm colored, pointy on each end and less than 1/4". Someone suggested maggots. But aren't maggots white and not found IN the soil and are mostly feeding in one place??? Also, even baby worms are skinnier and longer than these.

The ONE I had this morning was definitely a slug but was about 4-5 feet from where I replanted Wilty. But Wilty did have one slug before it got sick.

We have been having some rain every day for a couple of weeks, sometimes it is just a little. But we have dew in the mornings and today it was really heavy.

What do you think? Please tell me you know what Wilty had!!!!

I will go and sprinkle this stuff anyway. I called the 1-800 number for this stuff and she said that the small amount used won't hurt Kitty.

It says to use 1 teaspoon per 1 square yard. I willl probably use about 2 t. of this 1 lb. can!!! Small garden!

Get a photo of whatever it is and post it for us.

My camera is not tha good to take that small of thing. I just saw some more of them!!!

You know those bugs that roll up into a ball? I think that is what they are but they are a lot smaller than what I have seen in the house before. I am sure that is what they are. I saw them in my mulch when I went to put it by Wilty. What are they?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Pill bugs and Sow bugs. Mine don't roll up so I guess maybe they are sow bugs. I have read that they aren't bad because they eat decaying organic things. But I had so many. Yep, Wilty was decaying. Should I kill these?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Pill bugs/rolly poly bugs/etc. Check out the Bug Identification here at DG. I never hurt them since they eat dying vegetation. People often think because they find the bugs in the root area that they're eating good plant material but it's simply not true.

(Zone 5b)

I just can't look at those pics right now, I'm eating a late dinner ...Chinese food.....I'm really hungry & need to finish it! lol

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I know what you mean! One can take only so many gross things!

(Zone 5b)

hey Venice those bugs may be helping the eggshells & coffee grounds decay...

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I found them today hidding under the mulch. I pushed it aside and had not recover the soil around Wilty yet. So when I went to put the mulch there, there they were! There are all different types of things for their feasting. I can hear them now. Yum, yum!!!

(Zone 5b)

they're as hungry as i am....

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

You need peanut butter no bake cookies....grin

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sounds good with General Tsao's chicken.

(Zone 5b)

I need more food lol still hungry...

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

You aren't a sow bug, are you?

(Zone 5b)

well we both like plant matter, but I have fewer legs and probably like less moisture.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

This is what Wilty looked like when I got him. I can't believe that ever since I got him he has been withering away.

Those little critters were too little to count their legs. But I assume they had more than 2 legs.

Can you believe I didn't know what General Tsao's chicken was? I looked up the recipe and boy does that sound good!! : ~ )

I just had salad and a Lean Cuisinel : ~ (

Plants that get smaller and smaller, then disappear, are never a problem for tending. I had it happen with a mini hosta that grew more mini by the day until...poof...it was gone.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I think it poofed already! I cut off all the leaves because they were absolutely dead. I left a 1/2" stump so I could see where it is or was. I guess he is more of a stumpy now!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Poor Wilty/Stumpy. Hasn't got a leg to stand on!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

LOL!!!!! That is soooo funny!!!

(Zone 5b)

poor stumpy! lol
I love General Tsao's chicken, one of my favorites.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Wilty/Stumpy is reminding me of Monty Python and The Holy Grail when the fallen knight shouts out "Come back here and I'll bite off your knees" (or something close to that).

West Palm Beach, FL

Haha Monty Python...now you must go find shrubbery because Wilty just won't do!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

But she must find a Shrubber first...one can never do Shrubbery without a Shrubber....Nee

West Palm Beach, FL

Indeed! But one must implore as to the conundrum we face here regarding which came first - the shrubber or the shrubbery?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

What would a shrubber do if it weren't for shrubbery?

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I know not, but shall defend to the death (yours of course) the right to ask...well, maybe just til the Huge tracks of land are settled.

How many shrubs can a shrubber shrub if a shrubber could shrub shrubs? Nee or is is Icky picky noo noo?

grin....ach, heron after the fish...gotta run.

(Zone 5b)

you guys are hysterical!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

This is the last photo of Wilty. I did the best I could for him but I guess there were no fairies around to help him through the tough times. I will miss him. I know all of you will miss him also.
