For the love of amphibians!

Even with the cooler weather a few frog friends are still hanging around. This tiny one is so cute.

Awww, the last one is cute. "Cuddling" ... is that what we're calling it these days? ha ha

The overnight temps are getting in the 30's..but the frogs are braving it out. Still have many keeping me company.

Bud was feeling particularly friendly today. I love the white markings on his chin.

Alright Lady ... can't you see I'm trying for some lunch here?

jij..looks like your frog is eating well too. Nice looking frog!

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

He is huge now! His body (legs not included) is about the size of my fist!

Here is one of my new(er) guys who showed up. Pretty markings with the rust colored spots on him. Might be hard to see in the picture.

Ahh.. he is cute little one.

I've had a ton of new frogs show up, so unless it's Bud (big boy) or the bopsy twins (always seen together) I don't know them or have a name for them yet. This fella/fellette could be the same as the last one.

This little guy was chilling out on an upside down floater pot in the pond. I have another frog (or it might be this guy) who likes to hang out on a rock that I set on one of the filter boxes in the middle of the other pond.

This frog has the most interesting lumpy back. The fish were curious too!

Here is Smiley the one with the long nose.

This is small 3" one who is very cute.

Smiley is out of the pond peeking over a rock to see what is going on.

Yesterday, this guy stayed frozen on this rock for the longest time. I think he was afraid to move as something was hovering above him. He looked scared. I finally shooed him back into the pond and the blade of grass washed away!

What are the humps on their backs? Is that leg/hip joints or something?

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Had to do a bit of research. I opted out of frog dissection when I took biology many years ago.(Gross & inhumane)
Here is a picture I found on the internet which shows the skeletal system of a frog. Those lumps are
the Ileum and urostyle bones . I believe they help with the jumping along with their amazing leg bones.
Not a scientific answer, but I think I may be on the right path.

Just went out for a cup of coffee, and all was still dark. I had a small flashlight I was using to glance around the greenhouse, ponds, etc, and look who was out scoping an early morning meal -- Bud. :-)

If it was early morning..he may have been doing yoga.!LOL He is a cute one!

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

Check him out now ... just caught him chilling out on the bottom of an upside down floating pond pot (don't pay attention to the fact I clearly need to do some pond maintenance).

Clearly, he ain't missed many meals! LOL

Nice one..he looks very healthy

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

That's Bud ... the word "diet" is clearly not part of his croak-abulary, lol.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

This guy was hiding under a pile of leaves. I found him this morning as I was removing the spent hosta. He was very
upset that I disturbed him. It was a great hiding spot for him as there was zillions of slugs in this shade bed.He too has not missed a meal I think.

Here is his mug shot. I would say he is about 6-7 inches from nose to rear end.

I relocated him back to the pond. He took a short ride in a blue bucket.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

He sat by the edge for a bit before jumping in and diving to the bottem of the pond to hide.

I wonder if we need a Frogs and Amphibian forum? Does anyone know where I can get green frogs? I'd like to get 3-4 green frogs with the blue gene.

I think a "wildlife" section for frogs, fish, etc. would be a great addition.

I saw the amphibians thread and wondered if you would like this small story.

My neighbor's daughter was catching toads this year. She had so much fun she started keeping them. One was at least 2" in diameter. She gathered 10-12 and kept them ---

IN THE WINDOW WELL

Everyone of them lived all summer. She would run around the house and come to our side of the road and gather all sorts of bugs and worms, run back over, and dump them in the window well. Within 20-30 seconds every toad had the window well picked clean and head back to their perspective corners. It was kind of fun to watch. She finally released them all in the early fall when she got bored with them. All the kids had fun watching the toads this summer.

That's a great story - as a teacher I think she had fun and educated herself!

Thanks.

This one visited our pond at work last year.
